Thanks for the info on Mastodon. I’m trying to work up the energy to try it, but I have an awful headache today so maybe tomorrow.

    • I hope you feel better BB…I could see it catching on, with governments having there own servers, or news and organizations having their own servers. Kind of like how on the web the .gov and .org is used. But only it would be the entity that is responsible for the server. So it is like email in that sense. If that makes sense.

    • bostonboomer says:

OK I actually tried it, but I never got a confirmation email. I tried twice. When I tried to get help, it just said I don’t have a confirmed email.

      • quixote says:

The usual procedure is to send a link to the email addres you gave. Once you click on the link, that verifies it as a real email address (not some kind of robospamming). So see if there’s anything in your email. If it’s aged out, try the process again, but check your email sooner.

There are 100,000s people signing up to Mastodon just now, so their servers are being upgraded to deal with the load. Depending where the admins are in the process (these are all volunteers working in their copious free time) things can be a bit slow.

        • quixote says:

PS. Hope you feel better soon!

        • bostonboomer says:

They never sent me the confirmation email. I tried twice. I also emailed them, no response. Today I tried messaging them on Twitter. Right now I don’t have a good impression.

          • bostonboomer says:

I registered on a different server and got in.

          • quixote says:

Yes, I should have mentioned trying that. Good thinking. As I say, the servers are run by volunteers, so if one gets overloaded, trying another route is the thing to do. (That tends to be true of all open source software 😀 )

          • bostonboomer says:

Unfortunately, I can’t follow JJ, because her server is still telling me I’m unverified. I’m not sure I have the energy to deal with Mastodon.

          • quixote says:

Take it a bit at a time, when you’re up for it. I bumped into that “you’re not verified” on other servers too. One thing that seems to work is to search for the person you want __in the search bar on your mastodon page__, not in the usual url bar.

So, for instance, if you were looking for me, you’d enter @quixote (I think! Something like that. Oh dear. Not sure I remember. Learning curve!)

            I haven’t visited JJ yet either, but she’s found me 😀 . I’m working on it 😆

            What’s your mastodon address, bb?

    • quixote says:

Thanks for the useful links, JJ. Like debirdify

I want to believe this tweet is true but where is the information coming from? I see no change at FiveThirtyEight.

Well and good, but I’m cynical. Twitter, et al., was supposed to democratize social media too. I’d be happy to be surprised. We’ll see.

      • quixote says:

Good signs are that the platform is open source and ad-free. Plus if the person running a server sells it to, oh, say, Musk, the rest of Mastodon can block that server and/or give its users new homes without them losing followers.

I’m sure a real evil genius could figure it out, but I have a hard time even imagining how you’d turn that into a monetizable mound of crap.

    • NW Luna says:

      • Luna, we do not agree on things of this nature…but I believe you would be able to find a server that would not have any issues with a post like that. At least I think you will.

        • NW Luna says:

Sounds like you believe that women do have dicks? ((*boggle* *mind*))

Of course trans people shouldn’t face discrimination in jobs, housing, etc.

It’s not a human rights for men to be in women’s private same-sex spaces and sports. That would override women’s rights for the sake of men’s feelings.

      • quixote says:

I don’t know on mastodon.social, which I think is the biggie right now. Haven’t had occasion to respond to the kind of post which needs that information :/ . I have seen a new arrival saying ‘Zomg! Where do I go to be safe from terfs?!’ So there is that.

Not sure what it’s going to take for the understanding to percolate into general consciousness that women do have standalone rights, not to be taken away for anyone’s convenience. Just like trans people do. (Rights to your own spaces. Validation isn’t a right. etc etc)

I’m hoping the major resistance going on right now in the UK will be a big step on the path.

      • quixote says:

Welp, I read the terms of service (not that they call them that) not a thing I normally ever do. And you’re not allowed to have “sexist, racist, homophobic, or transphobic” content and be affiliated with the group.

The typical wording when problems haven’t been thought through. I have a suspicion I know what the reaction would be if one started a women’s rights server or a lesbian rights one. (Gay men, of course, don’t get one hundredth of the harassment.) I’m pretty sure they don’t federate with spinster.xyz, although I don’t know the history of who decided what in that case.

Oh well. Maybe someday women will actually be understood to be full actual citizens of planet earth.

        • NW Luna says:

Betcha the terms of service place ‘transphobic’ (aka biological reality) content as worse than ‘sexist’ conduct.
