Open Thread: Republicans don’t *have* to be Mean-Spirited like Karl Rove

I admit I didn’t watch a single Superbowl ad. I didn’t watch the halftime show either. I just can’t stand to. I did hear that there was an ad with Clint Eastwood in it, and I decided to watch it after I heard that Karl Rove was “offended” by it. From Raw Story:

Fox News host Jon Scott on Monday told Rove that Democrats were celebrating the ad as evidence of the effectiveness of President Barack Obama’s bold decision to bailout the auto companies instead of letting them go under.

“This is a sign of what happens when you have government getting in bed with big business like the bailout of the auto companies,” Rove complained. “The leadership of the auto companies feel they need to do something to repay their political patrons.”

“I was, frankly, offended by it,” he added. “I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood. I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics. And the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising.”

As the article points out, Rove’s old boss Dubya provided General Motors with $17.4 billion in government loans before Obama was President. Was he offended by that?

We’ve actually reached the point where Republicans are “offended” by improvement in the U.S. economy and are doing everything in their power to bring it down again. As for Clint Eastwood, who is a registered Republican, I thank him for not only doing the ad but also for standing up for LGBT rights.

I can’t say I’m any kind of fan of Clint Eastwood, but, damn, professional actors really do know a thing or two. That was downright inspiring, even though I’m actually allergic to “ain’t Amurrika grand” stuff. If it works on me, it’ll work on anyone.

    No wonder Rove is PO’ed.

Kudos to Eastwood! That was a hell of an ad. Inspiring, effective and just extremely well done.

Karl Rove knows that, too. As I said offline to you, BB: The Republicans remind me of Mikey in the old cereal commercial–they hate everything.

Rove’s offended because he doesn’t have an answer to this. Boo-hoo!

Eastwood had a statement issued. He said he wasn’t supporting any politician now. If Obama or any other candidate wanted to run in the spirit of that ad, they should go for it.

Compare this anti Debbie Stabenow ad to Clint Eastwood’s……….it too was on yesterday’s super bowl, and it is full of racism and sexism.

I just had the funniest thing happen as I was typing this……..I got a call from republican party asking for someone who wasn’t me………….I told them, yes it’s me, and I am no longer a republican but am now a socialist, and to please update their list…………funniest shit…

      ROFLOL! That’s hilarious!

    • ralphb says:

I wish that would happen to me 🙂

The guy who ran that racist ad doubled down on it today. What an idiot.

    • peggysue22 says:

Good one, Fannie! Would love to have seen the reaction on the other end of the phone. Hahaha.

As for the ad? Miserable. It deliberately conjures up racial animosity and fear.

Something the Republicans are very good at. But it doesn’t hold a candle to the Eastwood piece. And that’s why the Karl Roves of the world are ‘offended.’

BB, I am not sure but I think Eastwood has made a statement about the ad: Clint Eastwood weighs in on Chrysler ad – The Washington Post

    Eastwood says they’re both wrong.

“I just want to say that the spin stops with you guys, and there is no spin in that ad. On this I am certain,” Eastwood told Fox News, in a statement read on-air by Bill O’Reilly. “I am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it. I thought the spirit was OK.”

    • bostonboomer says:

Of course he didn’t mean it to be political. I didn’t take it that way. It’s just monsters like Rove who see everything in a twisted light. Here’s a quote from Eastwood at CNN

“…There is no spin in that ad. On this I am certain,” Eastwood said in a statement to Fox News late Monday night. “I am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it. … If Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it.”

Fortunately Clint isn’t a waffler. Like most sane people, he doesn’t see anything political about Americans pulling together for the country.
