The Tsarnaev Family Is Beginning To Look A Little Spooky

“Uncle” Ruslan Tsarni speaking to the media in front of his home in Montgomery Village, MD

Ruslan Tsarni, pictured above talking to reporters, is brother to Ansor Tsarnaev and uncle to Ansor’s sons Dzhokhor and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Another brother, Alvi Tsarni, lives fairly close to Ruslan. At some point Ruslan and Alvi had their surnames legally changed.

As you can see from the photo above, Ruslan Tsarni lives in a rather stately, expensive-looking home. He has been identified in news reports as “a corporate lawyer and oil company executive.”

I’ve been floating around Twitter, Google, and Facebook for the past few days, mainly trying to find out anything I can about the mysterious “Misha,” who supposedly influenced Tamerlan Tsarnaev beginning some time in 2010.

I don’t want to get into too much in the way of conspiracy theory, so I’m just going to lay out the facts that are being reported around the internet and let the chips fall where they may. I really don’t know what it all means–maybe nothing–but there are certainly some interesting connections coming out.

I’ll get to the “Misha” story a little later; first some background on Uncle Ruslan, who has some “spooky” connections (pun intended). Daniel Hopsicker, who is somewhat eccentric but IMHO an excellent researcher and writer, has dug up some very suggestive stuff about Ruslan Tsarni. I got some additional information from this post at Democratic Underground.

Beginning in the early 1990s, Tsarni worked as a “consultant” for USAID, which is known to be frequently used as a cover for CIA operatives, according to Jeff Stein (SpyTalk) at the Washington Post.

Hopsicker writes:

The uncle of the two men who set off bombs at the Boston Marathon, who struck the only grace note in an otherwise horrific week, worked as a “consultant” for the Agency for International Development (USAID) a U.S. Government Agency often used for cover by agents of the CIA, in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan during the “Wild West” days of the early 1990’s, when anything that wasn’t nailed down in that country was up for grabs.

“Uncle Ruslan” Tsarni of Montgomery Village Md., whose name was the top trending topic worldwide on Twitter last Friday for his plain-spoken condemnation of his two nephews, has had a checkered business career, that began well before he graduated (as Ruslan Z Tsarnaev) from Duke Law School in 1998.

Tsarni was also a Halliburton contractor:

Ruslan’s involvement with USAID, while suggestive, might still be irrelevant, were it not for the discovery of his decade-long involvement with companies in the orbit of the Sun God, Halliburton, which stands accused in numerous and increasingly-credible accounts as “lead dog” in an invading force of “non-state actors.”

All of this, mind, was in support of a noble cause. We were fighting communism. No, wait? We weren’t anymore.

Still, we must have been fighting something. Wait. It’ll come to me…Maybe it was a push to weaken Russia’s grip over former Soviet Republics. That sounds like an admirable goal. Alas,  the means chosen to achieve it involved providing covert U.S. support, in Chechnya, to Islamic terrorists.

Haven’t we all already see that movie? No one with a functioning heart could be anxious to see it again. But, wait! Does Dick have a functioning heart?

Hopsicker has a pretty colorful writing style, and you can read all the details at his blog, but briefly, in 2005 Ruslan Tsarni went to work for Big Sky Energy (a Halliburton subsidiary) as Vice President, Business Development & Corporate Secretary. Before that Tsarni worked for two other Halliburton-connected companies, Nelson Resources and Golden Eagle Partners.

Saturday Reads: Steubenville News, Democrats’ Latest Cave, Plus Villager Snits and Fits

News-Wasting-Time

Good Morning!!

There is some news coming out of Steubenville, Ohio in the buildup to the the grand jury investigation, which begins hearing from witnesses on Tuesday.

From The Columbus Dispatch: School, other sites searched in wider Steubenville rape probe

Police officers and investigators yesterday were searching the eastern Ohio high school attended by two football players who raped a 16-year-old girl after an alcohol-fueled party last summer, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said.

Searches also took place at Vestige Ltd., a digital-evidence company in northeastern Ohio, and the offices of the Steubenville school board in addition to Steubenville High School, DeWine said. The searches are part of an attempt to learn whether other laws were broken in connection with the rape.

“What I hope people will believe when we’re done is that we did everything we could to find the truth and that justice was done,” DeWine said in an interview. “What you’re seeing today is just part of that effort.”

Using warrants, police officers and investigators began the searches about 2 p.m. and possibly would work into the night, DeWine said. There was no immediate word on what the searches turned up…

Judges sealed investigators’ requests for the search warrants at the request of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, ruling that disclosing them “would be detrimental to the ongoing criminal investigation,” according to the judges’ orders.

The Atlantic Wire asks: What Is Steubenville Still Hiding?

Toward the end of the school day Thursday, more than eight months after a Steubenville Big Red pre-season game turned into a serious of house parties and a series of attacks on a 16-year-old girl, local police and investigators showed up — as if out of nowhere — at Steubenville High. They stayed on campus into the night, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine told the Associated Press, executing search warrants that were either new or unheard of — and certainly fascinating. “Steubenville Police assisted the Attorney General in the search warrants,” said William McCafferty,  the local police chief who “begged” for evidence when the initial crime was reported. Officials for Steubenville city schools, who have been publicly silent (save for one brief statement) since that fateful August night that brought a social media and judicial storm upon the Ohio town, confirmed the search in a a statement released Friday reading in part that “we have been from the beginning and are continuing to fully cooperate with the authorities in this investigation.”

But this is a new investigation, and this week’s search appears to have an urgency of its own, as DeWine’s grand jury prepares to convene on Tuesday. The attorney general said the searches at Steubenville city schools were “just part of that effort” — an effort he announced after two Steubenville High students and football players, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, were found guilty of rape. “We cannot bring finality to this matter without the convening of a grand jury,” DeWine said at the time. “I anticipate numerous witnesses will be called. The grand jury, quite frankly, could meet for a number of days.”

Grand juries, by their nature, are conducted in secret, and the warrants executed on Thursday remain sealed — and so it remains unclear whether investigators were searching computers, paperwork, or physical evidence. DeWine has said the grand jury will be looking for, among other things, at the crimes of failure to report a felony, tampering with evidence. DeWine explained that “indictments could be returned and additional charges could be filed” in light of the jury, the nine members of which were seated last week but will begin hearing testimony and reviewing evidence on April 30. He alsocalled the grand jury “a very good investigative tool as well as a very deliberative body,” which makes the timing of the school search all the more interesting.

It sounds like this could get interesting. Personally, I’m hoping Coach Reno Saccoccia gets his comeuppance.

Yesterday, Democrats in Congress once again allowed Republicans to treat them like doormats when they voted to ease sequestration “pain” for the mostly wealthy frequent flyers.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev Was An Alex Jones Fan

Jones-Tsarnaev

Authorities have been trying to figure out how deceased Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev was radicalized. It turns out it could have been at least partially a result of following uber conspiracy theorist Alex Jones of InfoWars and PrisonPlanet fame.

From Alternet:

In a bizarre twist befitting a Hollywood conspiracy theory movie,  the AP reports today that Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was influenced by conspiracy theories, including Alex Jones’ website InfoWars, which has been  pushing a narrative that the Tsarnaev brothers were patsies set up by a government cabal to take the fall for the bombing.

Tamerlan “took an interest in Infowars,” according to Elmirza Khozhugov, the ex-husband of Tamerlan’s sister. He was also apparently interested in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and was trying to find a copy of “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,” one of the most notorious conspiracy tomes of history.

Every time the government calls anything a “terrorist attack,” Alex Jones starts ranting about false flag operations. In fact, when Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick gave a press conference after the bombings, the first question he got was from some Alex Jones or Ron Paul follower:

“Is this another false flag attack staged attack to take our civil liberties?”

Now we find out the head bomber was one of those guys too. This would be funny if it weren’t so tragic. As I was telling Dakinkat a little while ago, the Tsarnaev brother were the Beavis and Butthead of “terrorism.” Check out this list of “The 11 Most Mystifying Things the Tsarnaev Brothers Did.”

To me the most bizarre thing they did was confess to the guy whose SUV they had carjacked, then leave the guy alone in the car while they went into a convenience store for snacks. After the guy escaped, they didn’t even notice his cell phone was still in the car, giving the police the ability to follow their every move by GPS.

But I digress.

According to Buzzfeed, Jones is “downplaying” the reports that Tamerlan was a huge fan.

Alex Jones is not surprised that the media is reporting that Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a fan of his Infowars website, he told BuzzFeed on Tuesday.

“It’s just standard,” Jones said. “Anyone you talk to is familiar with my show. When I go out in public, half the people I meet in this country and in other countries too say they listen to my show. The show is bigger than the mainstream media admits.”

Jones — whose site has peddled conspiracy theories about the Boston Marathon bombing and suggested that Tsarnaev is innocent — conceded that Tsarnaev “may have actually been a listener.”

“He could be a listener,” Jones said. “It could be true. I’ve talked to the family and most of them are listeners. My show is anti-terrorism and my show exposes that most of the events we’ve seen have been provocateured.”

“Provocateured?” Is that in the dictionary? I think that’s an example of “verbing.”

But again, I digress.

Another big influence on Tamerlan was apparently a mysterious “radical exorcist” named Misha. Adam Clark Estes of The Atlantic Wire:

The major development in the sleuthing of the Tsarnaev brothers, specifically sinister Tamerlan, involves a red-bearded exorcist named Misha. Misha was a few years older than Tamerlan and had emigrated to the Boston area from Armenia. Whereas the Tsarnaevs were born into a Muslim home, Misha converted and soon became involved in radical teachings. Citing the boys’ uncle Ruslan Tsarni, the Daily Mail reports that Misha used to “give one-on-one sermons to Tamerlan over the kitchen table during which he claimed he could talk to demons and perform exorcisms.” That’s really weird.

According to multiple reports, Tamerlan and Misha met between as 2007 and 2009 near the Cambridge area. “Misha was telling him what is Islam, what is good in Islam, what is bad in Islam,” said Elmirza Khozhugov, the former brother-in-law of the Tamerlan and Dzhokhar, who sat in on some of the conversations. “This is the best religion and that’s it.” Khozhugov told the Associated Press. “Misha was important. Tamerlan was searching for something. He was searching for something out there.”

It all sort of unraveled at that point. Tamerlan immersed himself in radical Islam and even quit listening to music because, he said, it’s “not really supported in Islam.” (Misha told him that.) The 26-year-old’s radical thinking wandered into the political sphere as well, and apparently, he started getting into conspiracy theories. We’re not talking Area 51 or the 9/11 Truther movement. Tamerlan got into pretty much all of the conspiracy theories, including one century-old fantasy that Jews rule the world.

Here’s a longer article on the mysterious Misha by Adam Goldman, Eric Tucker, and Matt Apuzzo.

Under the tutelage of a friend known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing and stopped studying music, his family said. He began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Jews controlled the world.

“Somehow, he just took his brain,” said Tamerlan’s uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, who recalled conversations with Tamerlan’s worried father about Misha’s influence. Efforts over several days by The Associated Press to identify and interview Misha have been unsuccessful….

Throughout his religious makeover, Tamerlan maintained a strong influence over his siblings, including Dzhokhar, who investigators say carried out the deadly attack by his older brother’s side, killing three and injuring 264 people.

“They all loved Tamerlan. He was the eldest one and he, in many ways, was the role model for his sisters and his brother,” said Elmirza Khozhugov, 26, the ex-husband of Tamerlan’s sister, Ailina. “You could always hear his younger brother and sisters say, ‘Tamerlan said this,’ and ‘Tamerlan said that.’ Dzhokhar loved him. He would do whatever Tamerlan would say.

“Even my ex-wife loved him so much and respected him so much,” Khozhugov said. “I’d have arguments with her and if Tamerlan took my side, she would agree: ‘OK, if Tamerlan said it.'”

Of course the Obama administration is trying to peddle the story that the Tsarnaevs were followers of Anwar al-Awlaki. Sorry, I don’t buy it. I’ll say it again, these guys were the criminal version of Beavis and Butthead, except maybe not as smart.

The media has only uncovered the tip of the iceberg so far. There is going to be a lot more crazy stuff coming out about Tamerlan Tsarnaev. What will tomorrow bring?

Afternoon Open Thread: Steubenville Football Coach Gets Two-Year Contract Extension

Steubenville HS football coach Reno Saccoccia

Steubenville HS football coach Reno Saccoccia

Hey, no big deal right? All he did was cover up a couple of rapes committed by his players… /s

From The Atlantic Wire:

Despite allegations that he knew about a rape and tried to protect his players who committed it, despite widespread criticism that he didn’t punish his team enough and that he should be fired, and despite a grand jury that could charge him looming next week, the powerful Steubenville High football coach Reno Saccocia has been approved for a two-year administrative contract, the city superintendent confirmed to The Atlantic Wire Monday afternoon.

The Ohio Valley’s Herald Star newspaper reported on the Steubenville school board’s minutes over the weekend in an article that included a single phrase about the coach’s new deal:

Two-year administrative contracts for Charles Kokiko, administrator; Bryan Mills, assistant middle school principal; Reno Saccoccia, director of administrative services; Joseph Yanok, middle school principal; Melinda Young, director of programs; and Sara Elliot, school psychologist.

In a phone interview with the Wire, Steubenville schools superintendent Mike McVey described the administrative services position as a “board approved two-year-administrative contract in his current position” that was up for renewal. “Coaching contracts are different from teaching and administrative contracts,” McVey said, stressing that the teaching title was “supplemental” to Saccoccia’s coaching contract.

Nonetheless, the school board’s approval will keep Saccoccia at the school — and it signals a vote of confidence in perhaps the most influential man in the fading steel town that was consumed by the social media response to a case in which two of Saccoccia’s players were convicted in juvenile court of raping an unconscious 16-year-old girl at after parties for a pre-season game by the powerhouse Big Red football team. A grand jury hearing into possible additional charges relating to the parties and their aftermath is now scheduled to convene on April 30.

Why am I not surprised?

Breaking . . Boston Bombing Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Arraigned – WCVB Boston

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Moments ago, WCVB Boston reported that, according to “a federal official,” Boston Marathon Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been arraigned in his hospital bed.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving accused Boston Marathon bomber, has been arraigned in his hospital bed, a federal official tells NewsCenter 5’s Kelley Tuthill.

The complaint against him has been sealed, according to Gary Wente, the circuit executive for the U.S. Courts in Boston.

Law enforcement sources tell ABC News Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the second suspect in the Boston Marathon Bombing, is awake and responding sporadically in writing to questions.

The source told ABC’s Pierre Thomas investigators were questioning the 19-year-old Tsarnaev about other cell members and other unexploded bombs, but said no details were given yet on answers.

More information from Twitter — no links yet.

WCVB reporter Tuthill “a little frustrated” that no pool reporter was allowed to be present at the arraignment–they had been told it would be “public.”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has no announced that Tsarnaev will not be treated as an “enemy combatant.”

Suck it, Lindsey!!

WCVB has also posted a newly released photo of Tsarnaev leaving an ATM after using the card stolen from the highjack victim.

Dzhokhar-Tsarnaev-Leaving-ATM

I’ll post more details in the comment thread as I get them.

UPDATE:

Video of WH briefing at Politico

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev “will not be treated as an enemy combatant,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday.

Carney’s statement comes after a group of Republican lawmakers led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have called for Tsarnaev to be treated as an enemy combatant, at least for the purposes of interrogation. “The suspect, based upon his actions, clearly is a good candidate for enemy combatant status. We do not want this suspect to remain silent,” Graham said in a statement along with Sens. John McCain and Kelly Ayotte, and Rep. Peter King.

Tsarnaev, Carney said, is a U.S. citizen and should be treated as such and tried in civilian court. “This is absolutely the right way to go and the appropriate way to go,” he said.

The Justice Department and Attorney General Eric Holder made the determination of how to try Tsarnaev and “the whole national security team supports this decision,” Carney said, adding that because the suspect is a citizen, there is no other option for how to try him.
