Trump Tantrum Open Thread

Here’s a fresh thread in case anyone wants to discuss the televised Trump tantrum tonight. One good thing, Rachel Maddow is going to be on at 8PM with Chris Hayes and will follow the Trump tantrum with other guests on her show.

A few reads:

George Packer at The Atlantic: The Suicide of a Great Democracy.

Also at The Atlantic: Why Mike Pence Couldn’t End the Shutdown.

Reuters: A growing number of Americans blame Trump for shutdown: Reuters-Ipsos poll.

CBS News: Every congressperson along southern border opposes border wall funding.

This is a wide open thread.

I’m still not sure if I should watch Trump. I’m tempted to turn off the TV when he comes on and set a timer for 8 minutes.

But what if he just goes on and on like he often does? Will the networks shut him down?

  2. bostonboomer says:

So far, no Rachel. I switched to CNN, but will keep checking.

    • Fannie says:

They are illegals, they are criminals for just being alive. He repeatedly says this time and time again. When in fact they are migrant workers.

  5. OG says:

I figured out the presidents who told him they should have built a wall were Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford Regan, and GHW Bush. Unfortunately, they are all dead and can’t confirm the story.

  6. roofingbird says:

6:08 So far, if you are one of his flying minions, you are going to believe him. After all, wealthy people build walls around their compounds, why shouldn’t we. Don’t watch this if you have high blood pressure. It’s horrible.

    • roofingbird says:

It was very carefully scripted and he didn’t wander.

    • Fannie says:

Really, I mean what the hell, rich politicians are building walls because they love those living inside and hate those living outside? What the fuck…………….my HOA says I will have a plastic fence, and wrought iron fence that faces the pond, then they can put a lien on the property.

  10. OG says:

The five billion would build a little over two hundred miles of fence in Texas, hire 375 additional border agents plus canine teams. That part of the border in Texas has a great deal of illegal entry and drug traffic.

    • NW Luna says:

With 5 billion we could just buy up the drugs coming over the border and destroy them.

      • OG says:

Not a bad idea. But is that five billion a year forever

        • NW Luna says:

Also have to do something about demand.

          • OG says:

For pain after surgery and back injuries I have had to take some of those drugs. They can really cause problems fast. I know people who get addicted easily. Doctors prescribe them much to often, people get hooked and go to dealers than on to street drugs. Agree that demand is a real problem and needs to be addressed.

  11. Fannie says:

Did I ever tell you about the Russians living in Boise, Idaho. Started a church, purchased very very nice homes, and were selling drugs, and dealing in crime, and finally was busted 2018. Nothing said about them.

In a forceful and fact-challenged televised plea to the nation for his long-promised border wall, the president portrayed undocumented immigrants as murderers, rapists and drug smugglers in a dark Oval Office address. Democrats said he was stoking fear and governing by “temper tantrum.”

Trump for the first time used one of the rare platforms of the presidency: a scripted prime-time speech to the nation from the Oval Office. But whereas his predecessors mostly have used such occasions for unifying purposes, including to declare war and announce peace, Trump used it to try to gain a political advantage

New York City mayor vows health care for all — including undocumented immigrants

The mayor announced the plan the day after a Democrat on the other side of the country, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, also staked out an aggressive stance. On the day he was sworn into office, Newsom proposed that undocumented immigrants be eligible for Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid, to age 26 — instead of the current 19. And he called for the state to provide insurance subsidies to people with higher incomes than the ACA allows.

Under NYC Care, as the city’s program is being called, uninsured New Yorkers will be able to call a central phone number to get an insurance card and be assigned a doctor, giving them access to primary care and an array of specialty services, the mayor said. The services won’t be free for everyone: Fees will be assessed on a sliding scale, depending on income.

De Blasio estimated that the city would spend about $100 million annually once the program is fully operating in about two years.

Seriously, friends, what is with all that sniffling? Does Hair Drumpf suffer from MS, Parkinson’s disease, post nasal drip, a brain tumor? It would be irresponsible of us not to indulge in conjecture.

  17. RonStill4Hills says:

Trump needed a bump of coke to get through that speech.

He has no heart and it showed badly.

He did not believe what he was saying, he was sulking.

I guess we are lucky that we only have to defeat off-brand knock-off Hitler.

The real thing knew how to lie convincingly.

He embaraasss the people who flack for him every time.

Can you imagine doing advance hype for this shit sandwich and then have to do damage control after he sleepwalked through it?

The Great Slat-Fence of China was not built this way.

Rosenstein expects to leave Justice Dept. if new attorney general is confirmed

Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein has told people close to him that he expects to depart the Justice Department if a new attorney general is confirmed, though there are no concrete plans in place or a timeline for him to do so, according to people familiar with the matter.

Rosenstein has been the No. 2 Justice Department official since April 2017, his tenure defined by his appointment of Robert S. Mueller III to lead the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and the attacks he incurred from President Trump for doing so. Incensed by Mueller’s work, Trump periodically toyed with the idea of ousting his deputy attorney general, though Rosenstein managed to avoid the ax time after time.

Rosenstein’s departure — whenever it occurs — will likely spark fears about the future of the Mueller probe, though even now Rosenstein is not technically in charge of it. Rosenstein appointed Mueller to investigate whether the president’s campaign had coordinated with the Kremlin because then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions was recused from the matter. Special counsels, though, normally answer to the attorney general, so when Sessions was forced out in November, supervision fell to Matthew G. Whitaker, whom Trump chose to serve as acting attorney general.
