Hurricane Sarah hits the lower 50! MSM rushes to LOW GROUND!

I just spent a good week with nothing but a radio.   It was also broadcasting nothing but Gustav news 24-7.  So, i’m back reading the MSM and trying to catch up with the blogosphere. I feel like I’ve emerged from a cacoon to find the oxygen sucked out of the presidential campaign by Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. While I was concerned with Hurricane Gustav, Hurricane Sarah was the story every where else.

It appears the press has spent the majority of that week vetting Palin.  I wonder where all that hyper-vetting was when we needed that done with Senator Barrack Obama.  Will they ever get around to checking out his relationship with all those Chicago thugs?  How about figuring out if he still holds citizenship in Indonesia?

Yesterday was a treat for those of us starved for some one who really did look presidential.  Hillary gave a great speech in Florida.  Too bad she was having to ride to the rescue of the hapless DNC candidate. The Obama campaign is now begging her to offset the huge momentum coming from the McCain campaign after the suprise vp pick.  Hillary has even taken on the white knite mantle in such low low places as Daily Kampf and Huffington Poop.  Ah, what could have been …

Obama looked positively starved for oxygen and tired on George’s ABC morning talk show to the point he said he was having to take hits for his “muslim faith”.  He was so completely unaware of his gaffe, George had to remind him he was a christian.  Meanwhile, Biden showed he may be part of the Washington problem, but at least he understands the issues by discussing the current bail out plans of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.  Biden is the ultimate Washington insider and there is absolutely no way the Obama campaign is going to successful repackage this canned ham.

McCain is just smiling and basking in the Palin glow as he enjoys a much bigger post-convention bounce than Obama.  He’s decided team campaigning sells well, and the power duo have been going from city to city while attracting crowds evoking the rock star label again.  It also looks like McCain has pre-empted the change mantra and is successfully riding the maverick pony with his new wild west sidekick.  Ah, the American Western, what a completely wild, wild image.Meanwhile, the NY Times says Obama’s fundraising is suffering from the same anemia shown by the candidate.  It appears there’s a max to Obamamania and it was reached a long time ago.

Even Pumas have changed the conversation.  Overexposure abounds!Obama is so yesterday!  The focus in the PUMA movement has gone three ways now.  First, there are those intent on reforming the current democratic party and the process that keeps giving us losers.  The Denver Group has gone that direction.  I’m not sure if an outsider movement can overcome the most insider of problems, but more power to them.  We need to get rid of caucuses and reform the primary system for both parties.  This is an ambitious, long term goal. A second group is focused on Hillary and pressuring the senate to recognize her as senate majority leader.  This is again an outsider movement focused on an insider problem. I think we can all say that the democratic congressional leadership is a big disappointment.  It’s only real accomplishment has been earning congress a lower approval rating than President Bush.  What exactly does it say when you’re more unpopular than the worst president in history?  The third group has jumped on the McCain wagon train and will ride it until Hillary comes back into play again in 2012.  I’m not there with McCain and his dependence on fundie fanatics.  I think he can handle the presidency but I just can’t support irresponsible tax cuts and anyone who hangs with folks that take the bible literally.  I didn’t spend so much of my life sitting in university classrooms and studying science to turn my brain off in the voting booth. I just can’t hold my nose and vote for someone beholden to the religious right.

Personally, I think it’s important we start to focus downticket and ensure a reasonable group of senators and representatives will hit Washington to ensure that McCain’s Maverick side will be rewarded while his pandering to the social right side goes completely punished.  Meanwhile, as Hurricane Ike becomes less relevant to Louisiana and I return my focus to research and the blood sport of politics, I’m taking bets on how long the Palin momentum will continue and if the Obama campaign can get a jumpstart again.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the misogyny that is deeply embedded in US culture.  We’ve seen the re-ignition of the mommy wars which is unwinnable as was the cold war.  I’ve also seen perfectly good progressives tell jokes like ‘well, at least she has TWO things going for her’.  I may just return to my old feminist roots and burn a few bras.  One thing hasn’t changed for me though,  I’m not voting for Obama.

McCain makes Political and Puma Savvy VP Choice

If there were ever an indicator that McCain was going after PUMA voters his selection of Governor Sarah Palin sealed the deal.  A savvy selection, Palin will not irritate the social conservatives in the party while intriguing PUMAs and other disaffected Hillary backers.

Palin is a first-term governor credited with reforms of her out-of-the-way state. Newly minted Democratic nominee Barack Obama is making an aggressive play for the traditional GOP stronghold and its three electoral votes, and polls show the race close.

At 44, Palin is younger than Obama and, like McCain, she calls herself a maverick.

I want my money back! (AND my country!)

The U.S. taxpayers provide $50 million per party for these shams called conventions. After watching the chicago version of a staged roll call and what amounted to a real deathblow to democracy, I want to ask every one to write their congressional representatives and senators and demand their money back!  I don’t feel like I need to pay for advertising rigged elections, false unity, and forced results.

I didn’t blog yesterday on Hillary’s speech and I’m really reluctant to do so on Bill’s speech because they both did an excellent job doing exactly what the party demanded.  They were brilliant speeches making the case against McCain and any continuation of the Bush 43 policies.  This was supposed to make the case for Senator Obama.  I felt they tried, but since the case FOR Obama is basically nothing BUT the case AGAINST McCain, even the brilliant oratory of skilled politicians couldn’t do it for me.  I’m glad that many AA’s will get the chance to vote for a black presidential candidate, but there has to be something going for a presidential candidate other than an opponent that doesn’t share your views and historical opportunities.  That candidate has to have a proven record that shows he’s up for the job.  Senator Obama falls woefully short on that account and I cannot turn my country over to another President that requires training wheels and is so obviously over his head on issues regarding the economy and national security.  He may get to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, but he also has to decide what to do with the resurgence of Russian Aggression, Osama Bin Laden, and a stagnant economy that is not providing equal opportunities for all Americans.

I am so damned tired of feeling that the Democratic Party has offered us the lesser of two evils and I just need to fall in, I could scream.  I want to feel inspired by a presidential candidate, not feel like I have to reluctantly go along with whatever the party insiders offer up.  I think, PUMAS, it’s time for a party of our own making.

I’ve spoken about this election to what I consider typical Americans.  I asked several of the women I teach with at the University if they’ve been watching any of the convention.  I’ve talked to my dad and sister in Seattle.  Every one pretty much agrees, once again, we have two choices that none of us really want.  Dad–a Republican–doesn’t want McCain.  Most of the folks I speak to, other than my young students, really don’t want Obama.  I hear so many folks saying that this is the worse choice they’ve had for a long time and they feel like staying home rather than exercising their most sacred duty and wonderful gift from our ancestors, the right to vote for who will lead us.

So what I want to know is why do have to pay for this sham upfront if I’m going to spend the next four years paying for this Hobson’s choice?  Why do I want to scream and say, not again!  This is just another set of mediocre politicans that have pandered to the worst of their party’s interests.

Something has to be done about the two party system.  Since the birth of the televised convention, democracy is becoming less and less vibrant.  It is more a televised attempt at giving us what they want. I even felt that the primaries and caucuses this year were a complete waste of money.  They’ve been fixed and gamed to produce a desired result.  Caucuses need to be eliminated.  Primaries need to be held on a rotating calander and a regional basis with a very short election cycle.  Iowa keeps creating these losers and needs to be put into a pack with the rest of the heartland and no state should have any kind of special status.

Last presidential election cycle, I felt I got stuck with John Kerry by the time Louisiana had it’s primary.  I knew he was a complete loser but went along any way.  By that time, I had no choice in it.  My vote was meaningless.  I also felt that when I voted for him, I knew I was voting for a predestined loser.  This time, I refuse to do it.  Obama cannot win and I refuse to put any effort into pretending he will.  I’m frankly expecting a repeat of the McGovern-Nixon election.  Have any of you ever heard of a situation where a candidate gets a negative bounce with a vp selection and during a convention?  The DNC is too caught up with itself to stop this disaster in process.

I’d like to put my two cents in for the future of the PUMA movement.  It’s something I’ve been putting forward here for some time.  We need to spend the next four years building the infrastructure for a viable THIRD party.  One that is based on the American people.  One that removes itself from corporate control and the control of those loud and obnoxious interest groups we see every convention time.  I don’t want to pander to evangelicals, I don’t want us split up by skin color,  and I definitely don’t want to obsess on wedge issues.  I just want a party that is interested in the economic issues and the safety issues we face every day as americans.  I want to focus on our shared interests.  I want to focus on  our health, our safety, the future of our children, jobs, and an equitable tax system.

Is that too much to ask?

Obama is not Winning Hillary Clinton’s Supporters or Independents

A new poll has just shown that 52 % of Hillary Clinton Supporters (WSJ/NBC poll) will support Obama.  The same poll showed that 17% of her supporters will be voting for McCain.  These new figures should be sending superdelegates into high concern mode as they head towards Denver.  While Obama is running neck-and-neck with McCain, any generic democratic candidate has a  10% lead while Senator Hillary Clinton is still showing a 5 – 8% lead over McCain.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC poll also points to a big challenge for Sen. Obama as his party gathers in Denver next week for its convention: rallying Sen. Hillary Clinton’s supporters to his cause. Only half of those who voted for Sen. Clinton in the primaries say they are now supporting Sen. Obama. One in five is supporting Sen. McCain. The Republican has reached out to Clinton supporters by offering steady praise for the former first lady and hinting that he’d be open to a running mate who supports abortion rights.

Is the press finally seeing that Senator Obama is a seriously flawed candidate who is unlikely to win the Presidiency?  Will the superdelegates wake up to the same realization before it is too late?

Overall, the poll finds the race a statistical dead heat, with 45% favoring Sen. Obama and 42% Sen. McCain. …Sen. Obama’s campaign faces a critical task in Denver: bringing Sen. Clinton’s supporters to his side. Among all voters, 11% say both that they would vote for Sen. Clinton if she were running against Sen. McCain and that they aren’t ready to back Sen. Obama against the Republican.

These voters seem like natural Obama backers: They are not happy with the direction of the country, they don’t like President Bush, and they want Congress to be controlled by Democrats. Ideologically, they are liberal or moderate. Demographically, they tend to be female with incomes below $50,000 — two groups that lean Democratic.

Yet people in this group view Sen. McCain more favorably than they view Sen. Obama, and they are uncomfortable with the idea of Sen. Obama in the White House. One in three sees Sen. Obama as “arrogant and cocky,” an image the McCain campaign has aggressively tried to create for him over the past month.

These disaffected Democrats could make a difference in big states where Sen. Clinton did well, including Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Can we say PUMA?  This is definitely a display of the size of the PUMA movement.  While I’m still betting Obama takes Biden to shore up his complete lack of foreign diplomacy, new rumors of a Hillary VP are found in every MSM outlet this afternoon.  Why put the obvious presidential candidate at the bottom of the ticket to drag the inadquate Obama up in the polls?  If I were Hillary, I’d run as fast as I can from this proposition, even though she’s already being blamed for Obama’s sagging poll numbers by all the usual suspects.

Superdelegates!!  PLEASE WAKE UP!  Put CLINTON first, and OBAMA second and I bet you’ll see those poll numbers shoot up in no time!

Meanwhile, CNN is reporting that Hillary’s Debt is still high.

Well over two months have passed since Hillary Clinton formally abandoned her White House bid, but newly-released Federal Election Commission reports show the New York senator has made little headway in paying off her sizeable campaign debt.

According to an FEC report filed Wednesday, Clinton’s debt as of the end of July stood at just under $24 million — a decrease of only $1.2 million since the end of June. More than $13 million of that total is owed to the New York senator herself, while close to $11 million is owed to individual vendors. Clinton has suggested she is not seeking to pay back the money she owes herself.

The report also shows Clinton was only able to raise $2 million in the month of July — down from close to $3 million in June. By comparison, Barack Obama raised over $50 million for his White House bid in the same time period.

The report comes as some high-profile Clinton backers have expressed disappointment Obama has not made more of an effort to help his onetime rival retire her campaign debt.
