Open Thread: Regulating Men’s Reproductive Health Choices

Ohio State Senator Nina Turner

Last week Ohio State Senator Nina Turner introduced state bill 307, which would require men to have several sessions with a sex therapist, a cardiac stress test, and obtain a notarized statement from their sexual partners saying they are really impotent before they could get a prescription for Viagra or any other “erectile dysfunction” drug. In addition, doctors prescribing the drugs would have to notify the patient in writing of all their possible side effects, and all documentation, including the statement from the man’s sexual partner would be kept in his medical records. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Turner says she also wants to rally women across the country to push for similar bills in their states.

“It’s not a joke,” Turner told The Plain Dealer this week. “I’m dead serious. I want to continue this strong dialogue about what is fair and what is equal.”

“It is crucial that we take the appropriate steps to shelter vulnerable men from the potential side effects of these drugs,” she said in a written statement.

“The men in our lives, including members of the General Assembly, generously devote time to fundamental female reproductive issues. The least we can do is return the favor.”

Furthermore, Turner is concerned about the serious side effects of ED drugs:

“The side effects of these drugs are very real,” she told The Plain Dealer. “I want to [protect] fragile men who are vulnerable and are not able to make decisions for themselves.”

Turner says her bill is based on medical recommendations for the use of these powerful drugs::

Under Senate Bill 307, men taking the drugs would continue to be tested for heart problems, receive counseling about possible side effects and receive information about “pursuing celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.”

“Even the FDA recommends that doctors make sure that assessments are taken that target the nature of the symptoms, whether it’s physical or psychological,” Turner said. “I certainly want to stand up for men’s health and take this seriously and legislate it the same way mostly men say they want to legislate a woman’s womb.”

Illinois State Rep. Kelly Cassidy

In Illinois, State Senator Kelly Cassidy has proposed an amendment to a state sponsored rape bill bill requiring ultrasounds for women seeking abortions. The amendment would require any man who asks for a prescription for Viagra to “watch a graphic video on the side effects” of the drug first. From HuffPo:

“If they’re serious about us not being about to make our own health care decisions, then I’m just as serious about them not being able to make theirs,” she told HuffPost on Monday….

Cassidy is one of a string of female lawmakers across the country who have introduced gender-equity amendments to anti-abortion bills. Wilmington, Del. City Councilwoman Loretta Walsh authored a resolution that declares “each ‘egg person’ and each ‘sperm person’ … equal in the eyes of the government.” Oklahoma Sen. Constance Johnson (D) proposed a “spilled semen” amendment to the state’s fetal personhood bill that would declare it an act against unborn children for men to waste sperm. Va. Sen. Janet Howell (D), meanwhile, introduced an amendment to a mandatory ultrasound bill that would require men to have a rectal exam before being prescribed Viagra.

Obama needs to come out against chastity belts because I don’t think we’ve hit peak wingnut yet.

I would actually be an Obama supporter if he came out against chastity belts….

I would vote for him if he REPEALED #NDAA 2012, and President Obama Stupak Executive Order…I am still ticked off over his Health Care give away to the insurance companies as I now have the 50 dollar deductible at the cost of my previous premium plan w/5 dollar deductible & dental ( that plan would cost me 2,300.00 a month now).

      • ralphb says:

Just curious, how would you propose Obama repeal the National Defense Authorization Act? Guessing but I don’t think he has that power 😉 He did pretty much eviscerate the indefinite detention portion of it with his signing statement and I was glad to see that.

Stupak, well that was just stupid on all their part. By the way, there was no such thing as a viable “public option”. That was a nice stalking horse used by “progressives” to move the debate away from Medicare for All, which is the only real public anything which might have worked for us.

    Possible side effects of Viagra:

COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Viagra:

Diarrhea; dizziness; flushing; headache; heartburn; stuffy nose; upset stomach.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Viagra:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; memory loss; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; painful or prolonged erection; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent vision changes; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes.

This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your health care provider.

Maybe that’s why Limbaugh lost his hearing?

    • peggysue22 says:

“Maybe that’s why Limbaugh lost his hearing?”

Or his mind. As a public service, I think we need an intervention.

    • ralphb says:

Oxycontin will also do that and we know he used a ton of that as as addict.

    • Woman Voter says:

Rush Limbaugh did he loose his hearing as a side affect?

Limbaugh reported two years ago that he had lost most of his hearing because of an autoimmune inner-ear disease. He had surgery to have an electronic device placed in his skull to restore his hearing.

Research has found that abuse of opiate-based painkillers like OxyContin can lead to profound hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear, said Dr. Gail Ishiyama, an assistant professor at the UCLA department of neurology. She could not confirm that was Limbaugh’s case without access to his medical history.,2933,99731,00.html

      • bostonboomer says:

But viagra can also cause deafness–see side effects listed above.

      • NW Luna says:

        “Autoimmune inner-ear disease” WTF???

Riiiiiiiight. And just which disease would that be? As a reasonably intelligent medical professional, I can’t think of any which would destroy only hearing and not affect anything else.

Autoimmune as in he did it to himself by his behavior — now that is plausible.

    • NW Luna says:

I love the requirements from Senators Turner and Cassidy! These requirements would not add much to the workload of any good clinician.

Any conscientious prescriber would tell a man wanting Viagra or the like that the most common reason for ED is likely hypertension, dyslipidemia, or diabetes. And would proceed to do a thorough workup for those conditions as well as a focused physical exam, which could indeed include a rectal/prostate exam. If the physical problems are ruled out, I’d recommend counseling. And all of the above should be done before or if prescribing.

I’ve prescribed Viagra sometimes to men with a legitimate medical need (neurogenic impotence from a neurological disease). I tell them about the adverse effects, as patients should always be given info on possible side effects of any med.

Involving the wife is a good idea — when Viagra was first introduced we saw a lot of UTIs occur in the wives of formerly impotent men who were now having (too much?) sex.

BTW Viagra is not an aphrodisiac. It simply increases blood flow. For this reason it has helped some of my female patients 😉

I hope these women stand their ground and fight back. I would support and vote for any of them!

Thanks for the quickie post BB! I really REALLY needed that laugh…

  5. peggysue22 says:

Love it! I particularly like and admire Ms. Turner’s concern for ‘the fragile men who may not be able to make decisions for themselves.’

We should definitely return ‘concern’ with concern.

Also like the idea of regarding egg people and sperm people equally. Just think of all those people being spilled heartlessly all over the planet. It’s positively criminal.

Right to life for sperm! Yes. This is something I can believe in.

    A wicked weapon.

    Good one, BB.

  6. ralphb says:

Maybe we have approached peak wingnut after all. I don’t think the chastity belt comment is a joke anymore. This is fucking outrageous.

that’s crazy the prosecutors that went after the girls should be put in prison my that my take on it

  7. djmm says:

Excellent. Plus under the conscientious objector clauses, pharmacists who have moral objections to Viagra should be able to refuse to provide it — just as many refuse to provide birth control to women. After all, how do they know what a man would be using it for?

REALITY!! And A Fix for Unemployment, Homelessness and Hunger

In addition to fixing healthcare the right way we need a NewDeal. We need a permanent and updated FDR WPA (Works Progress Administration). A Full employment act requiring the government to provide a job for everyone able to work that wants to work at a living wage or better. At safe, meaningful work where they live. Guaranteed by the US government. With free or very affordable excellent healthcare and free or very affordable education and training for advancement or just personal enrichment.

    ( )

( Gov. Peter Shumlin: Real Healthcare reform — )

( Health Care Budget Deficit Calculator — )

( Briefing: Dean Baker on Boosting the Economy by Saving Healthcare )

As you all know. Had congress passed a single-payer or government-run robust Public Option CHOICE! available to everyone on day one, our economy and jobs would have taken off like a rocket. And still will. Single-payer would be best. But a government-run robust Public Option CHOICE! that can lead to a single-payer system is the least you can accept. It’s not about competing with for-profit healthcare and for-profit health insurance. It’s about replacing it with Universal Healthcare Assurance. Everyone knows this now.

The message from the midterm elections was clear. The American people want real healthcare reform. They want that individual mandate requiring them to buy private health insurance abolished. And they want a government-run robust public option CHOICE! available to everyone on day one. And they want it now.

They want Drug re-importation, and abolishment, or strong restrictions on patents for biologic and prescription drugs. And government controlled and negotiated drug and medical cost. They want back control of their healthcare system from the Medical Industrial Complex. And they want it NOW!

For-profit health insurance is extremely unethical, and morally repugnant. It’s as morally repugnant as slavery was. And few if any decent Americans are going to allow them-self to be compelled to support such an unethical and immoral crime against humanity.

This is a matter of National and Global security. There can be NO MORE EXCUSES.

Further, we want that corrupt, undemocratic filibuster abolished. Whats the point of an election if one corrupt member of congress can block the will of the people, and any legislation the majority wants. And do it in secret. Give me a break people.

Also, unemployment healthcare benefits are critically needed. But they should be provided through the Medicare program at cost, less the 65% government premium subsidy provided now to private for profit health insurance.

Congress should stop wasting hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money on private for profit health insurance subsidies. Subsidies that cost the taxpayer 10x as much or more than Medicare does. Private for profit health insurance plans cost more. But provide dangerous and poorer quality patient care.

This is what the American people are shouting at you. Both parties have just enough power now to do what the American people want. GET! IT! DONE! NOW!

If congress does not abolish the individual mandate. And establish a government-run public option CHOICE! before the end of 2011. EVERY! member of congress up for reelection in 2012 will face strong progressive pro public option, and anti-individual mandate replacement candidates.

Strong progressive pro “PUBLIC OPTION” CHOICE! and anti-individual mandate volunteer candidates should begin now. And start the process of replacing any and all members of congress that obstruct, or fail to add a government-run robust PUBLIC OPTION CHOICE! before the end of 2011.

We need two or three very strong progressive volunteer candidates for every member of congress that will be up for reelection in 2012. You should be fully prepared to politically EVISCERATE EVERY INCUMBENT that fails or obstructs “THE PUBLIC OPTION”. And you should be willing to step aside and support the strongest pro “PUBLIC OPTION” candidate if the need arises.

ASSUME CONGRESS WILL FAIL and SELLOUT again. So start preparing now to CUT THEIR POLITICAL THROATS. You can always step aside if they succeed. But only if they succeed. We didn’t have much time to prepare before these past midterm elections. So the American people had to use a political shotgun approach. But by 2012 you will have a scalpel.

Congress could have passed a robust government-run public option during it’s lame duck session. They knew what the American people wanted. They already had several bills on record. And the house had already passed a public option. Departing members could have left with a truly great accomplishment. And the rest of you could have solidified your job before the 2012 elections.

President Obama, you promised the American people a strong public option available to everyone. And the American people overwhelmingly supported you for it. Maybe it just wasn’t possible before. But it is now.

Knock heads. Threaten people. Or do whatever you have to. We will support you. But get us that robust public option CHOICE! available to everyone on day one before the end of 2011. Or We The People Of The United States will make the past midterm election look like a cake walk in 2012. And it will include you.

We still have a healthcare crisis in America. With hundreds of thousands dieing needlessly every year in America. And a for profit medical industrial complex that threatens the security and health of the entire world. They have already attacked the world with H1N1 killing thousands, and injuring millions. And more attacks are planned for profit, and to feed their greed.

    Spread the word people.

Progressives, prepare the American peoples scalpels. It’s time to remove some politically diseased tissues.

God Bless You my fellow human beings. I’m proud to be one of you. You did good.

See you on the battle field.
