Morning-ish Reads: Carpe the Saturday!

Pluperfect. (h/t Joyce Arnold for passing this graphic along)

Morning, news junkies… What a week in politics…what a bunch of election year/horserace manure! I’ve got a potpourri of reads for you this morning, to help you get a break from all the political nonsense and recharge a bit. Hope you enjoy. I’m just gonna do this real quick link-dump style and then get to the grand finale… 😉

“Unfortunately, the Mexican food served abroad is not at all like ours. There is a misperception that Tex-Mex food – burritos, chilli con carne – is part of our daily diet,” says Ricardo Munoz Zurita, a well-known chef and owner of Azul Condesa restaurant in Mexico City.

“Perhaps Mexican chefs don’t know how to export their food as well as French, Spanish or Italian cooks,” he tells the BBC.

I’m going to post try to post a Saturday afternoon photobomb of my kitty-babes… here’s a brief teaser/preview:

So what’s on your read ‘n rant this morning?

Gary Larson is my favorite cartoonist ever – here’s a dolphin one for you, Wonk!

  2. Lily to the left, Rue to the right? I thought that Lily was about 4 months older than Rue, yet they seem to be the same size. BTW – I’m going to butt in a bit – kitties can get kitty acne on their chins from eating from plastic bowls. Walgreens has ceramic bowls at 2/$1. That’s what I use for my kitty horde.

Gotta run weekend errands, so will check out the links later.

    • their water dishes are all stainless steel. That’s just the free food dish that came along with their litter box–it’s temporary. I have one more stainless steel, but I’m looking for a stainless steel that’s two in one like the plastic one.

Both of the kitties are just really tiny.

    • I do need advice on whether you pill your kitties or whether you mortar pestle their meds/antibiotics into their food. I’ve had to pill Lily because she’s rejected the pill pockets (Rue on the other hand loved them, even though she’s not the sick one…)

      • Mortar & pestle as last resort. I’d recommend trying a pill gun. Most pet stores and/or vets carry them. If you have an “assistant”, have them hold Lily (arm around mid section & hand holding the front legs) while you put your hand on top of her head. Squeeze the jaws on each side so she’ll open her mouth. Use pill gun or drop pill in the back of her mouth. This is my favorite online vet site: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/pilling_a_cat.html

I always put ground-up pills or liquid kitty meds into a very small amount of food – something really delicious like tuna or salmon. I’ve never had much success with the pill gun.

        Good luck!

      • Connie, Beata…thanks for the advice. I’m going to the petstore today, so will look for some fish and (pill)guns.. LOL 😉

I’ve always used the open-the-jaw and put the pill on the back of the tongue method that Connie described. If you sneak up on them and get their mouths open before they realize what’s happening, it works well.

      • Thanks BB…that is exactly what I’ve been doing with Lily for the past couple days but wasn’t sure if that was the best way to go. She won’t even look at the pill pockets though, so that’s not gonna work for her, though it make work for the other… After I took the pill out and pilled it down Lily’s throat, Rue ate all the empty pill pockets I’d tried to give L.

I do what sound’s like Connie’s technique — sit on floor, wrap kitty in one arm, gently squeeze back of jaws with left hand, use a forefinger on right hand to slip just between canines on top jaw, while pulling down with left hand on middle of lower jaw, then quick! drop pill clutched in right hand down back of throat, then hold kitteh jaws closed –not too tight– and stroke under chin down front of neck. The last part helps kitteh swallow.

Then lots of praise. And watch so kitteh hasn’t just held the pill in her mouth to spit up a few moments later.

Some meds shouldn’t be crushed — your vet will know. Sometimes there’s a liquid version of a pill or vice versa, whatever is easiest to get into kitty.

I especially like the mackerel-tabby stripes on the left-hand cat! They are both so lucky to have you and such a good home.

All of the above, and cycled as required. sometimes the pill inserted in cold butter helps. If it’s soft they will just lick it off the pill. Sometimes wrapping the cat in a towel to restrain their paws helps. They are small so a small diametered plunger or dropper for liquid would be easier. They are also exceedingly cute!!

Why Do Cats Run the Internet? A Scientific Explanation

Cats may not be man’s best friend, but they’re arguably something even better: man’s key to instant Internet pageviews. It’s a long-established fact that Internet content—whether it’s a cutesy video, a photoshopped inside joke, or a longform public health article—has a better chance of achieving coveted “viral” status if it somehow evokes the sound of purring.

Cops in shoot out with Mexican drug gang across Rio Grande

(Reuters) – U.S. Border Patrol agents and Mexican drug traffickers fought a gun battle across the Rio Grande river in south Texas, authorities said on Friday, the latest of a spate of cross-border shootings in recent months.

The Border Patrol said gunfire erupted on Wednesday after agents confronted a group of smugglers loading bundles of marijuana into two vehicles on the banks of the Rio Grande west of Roma, Texas, a town about 250 miles south of San Antonio.

Will Sandra Fluke Sue Rush Limbaugh?

Sandra Fluke said Friday that she is entertaining the possibility of a suit against the conservative talk show host.

Seems to me she gets around the NYT case by being a private citizen, thus entitled to legal protections.
