Missouri Republican Candidate for US Senate: “Legitimate Rape” Victims Don’t Get Pregnant.

Missouri Representative Todd Akin is the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, running against current Senator Claire McCaskill. This insane, anti-science knuckle-dragger claims that if a rape is “legitimate,” a woman’s body can magically prevent pregnancy. And he claims he got his information from doctors!
Today Akin appeared on a local St. Louis TV show, The Jaco Report. The host, Chris Jaco asked him if there were any circumstances under which Akin believes abortion would be acceptable. In response Akin went into a bizarre dissertation about how Americans’ believe in the value of life is what makes this country great. For example, look at the firefighters who rescued people on 9/11 and didn’t even ask for their IDs. And then there are the American soldiers who were willing to rescue wounded people–even if they were only Iraqis.
Finally, Jaco broke in and pressed Akin on the abortion question. Akin said he thought abortion should be allowed in the case of a tubal pregnancy where the child could not survive, if the woman’s life were in danger. But not in cases of rape:
“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.
“Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”
Here’s the video:
A 1996 study by the American Journal of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found “rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency” and is “a cause of many unwanted pregnancies” — an estimated “32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year.”
Naturally, this isn’t the only strange idea Akin has about rape and women’s behavior. TPM learned that in 1991, Akin opposed a law against marital rape because “it might be misused ‘in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband,’ according to a May 1 article that year in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.”
Eventually, Akin was apparently pressured into voting for the bill. Akin also thinks the morning after pill is a “form of abortion,” and wants it banned.
Right now Akin is leading McCaskill by several points in the Missouri Senate race.
The New “Funny”: Rape Threats/Rape Tweets
Posted: July 11, 2012 Filed under: misogyny | Tags: comedians, he man woman haters, rape, rape culture, rape jokes, rape threats, Rape Tweets, Tosh 11 Comments***Warning*** The graphics below the fold are extremely graphic. RAPE, Misogynist slur content.
Updated with new content.
I’ve been watching a “comic” tweet something that he thinks is extremely funny and just part of comedy. He’s joined by a merry gang of Rape Tweeters. Simultaneously, I was watching Melissa from Shakesville deal with a similar incident. Rape culture is a huge part of our society. It’s disgusting.
I’m going to document the tweets I captured because they’ve disappeared from his tweet stream. It could be due to the abuse reports. But, dude is still on line so it might be he deleted them thinking he wouldn’t be caught threatening someone. I hope some one either SWATS him or the sex crimes police show up at his door. I wonder if this is how he texts his mom on mother’s day?
I guess what has started all this off is this story about Daniel Tosh and a rape “joke” during a stand up routine. I’m obviously not in his demographic and I don’t watch his show. The few times I’ve seen the show while channel surfing is about two minutes. I move on because it’s simply not funny imho. I guess it appeals to young men of certain demographic (e.g. white, immature, can’t get laid, bad looking, chubby, greasy, etc. Just notice the pics in the tweets below the fold.) Basically, it’s the call them “humorless, men hating feminists” men Haters Club all over again with violent rape threats thrown in to make it ‘edgy’.
Tepid apology? Thinly veiled insult?
You be Daniel Tosh’s judge.
A woman’s Tumblr post that went viral Tuesday claimed Comedy Central‘s “Tosh.0” host singled her out during one of his stand-up gigs and said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if that girl got raped by like, five guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her?”
We’re struggling to find humor (or proof of Tosh’s humanity) in that one.
Faced with Web backlash, the foul-mouthed comedian took to Twitter:
“All the out of context misquotes aside, i’d like to sincerely apologize,” he wrote, linking to the woman’s post.
“The point i was making before i was heckled is there are awful things in the world but you can still make jokes about them. #deadbabies.”
What more can we expect from the man who wrote Inappropriate Touch Tuesdays?
According to the blogger’s account, Tosh targeted her after she interrupted his show, yelling, “Actually, rape jokes are never funny!”
Rape Tweets are now en vogue with aspiring nasty young male comics and their adoring He Man Woman Haters Club. Here’s more information from Feministing which is more in line with the demographic of folks that know or care about what or who a Tosh might be.
This resulted in more criticism for this obvious fauxpology, but also a ton of Tosh defenders making more terrible rape jokes, and calling the woman a “dumb bitch“ and “cunt,” requesting her Twitter handle. The rest of the tweets in defense are regurgitations of the usual argument that “it’s just a joke” and #getoverit, Tosh’s job is to stir things up.
Yes, many comedians take life’s tragedies and make fun of them; they use humor as a way of coping with the awful things that happen to people. It’s actually similar to my own defense that bringing the funny into feminism and social justice makes it all the more accessible and fun, and can be a way for us to collectively laugh at the injustice that we have to deal with on a daily basis.
What Tosh did was not that.
Tosh threatened an audience member with rape. This should not be a conversation about where to draw the line (as much of themedia is asking around this). There is a very, very clear line here.
Be very careful treading around the Twitter today. It’s ugly ugly ugly. But then, it’s just one big frigging misogynistic, woman hating world out there, isn’t it?
PSSSSssssst. Tosh is said to have horrible boy cankles! I’m sure these next two “comedians” are poorly endowed and tweet with one hand, because let’s face it, look at their pix? What woman would want them?
Open Thread: Rape Culture USA
Posted: March 31, 2012 Filed under: Violence against women, War on Women | Tags: advertising, Belvedere Vodka, Calvin Klein, Dolce and Gabbana, gang rape, rape, sexualized violence 25 CommentsI was so shocked by the “high tech stalking” app that Dakinikat wrote about earlier today that I thought I’d follow up with some more examples of the rape culture American women have to survive in every day.
I missed this story when it first happened, so forgive me if you already heard about it. On March 23, Belvedere Vodka posted an ad on their Facebook page with a photo of a man apparently trying to sexually assault a startled, frightened woman. The ad copy read, “Unlike some people, Belvedere always goes down smoothly. Women quickly bombarded the page with outraged comments. From Jezebel:
Facebook comments ranged from “tell the cry-babies to shut up… this picture is AWESOME!!!” to “this kinda looks like rape.” Belvedere apparently decided to side with the “kinda” camp, because the photo disappeared from their Facebook page and Twitter account within an hour. An apology followed soon after: “We apologize to any of our fans who were offended by our recent tweet. We continue to be an advocate of safe and responsible drinking.”
The president of the vodka company, Charles Gibb, quickly apologized via Twitter; but really, this was simply inexcusable. Why anyone ever thought it was a good idea I never understand. But as some commenters noted on Dak’s post, some men just don’t get it no matter how many times it’s explained to them that rape isn’t funny or sexy and it’s not a good way to sell your product unless you’re looking to go out of business.
Now there’s more bad news for Belvedere. It turns out the woman who appeared in the ad–which has been plastered all over the internet even though it’s no longer on the company’s facebook page–is suing because she did not give permission for her image to be used in the ad.
Alicyn Packard is a vocal actress living in Los Angeles whose likeness was used in the Belvedere ad….
Packard never gave her permission for her likeness to be used.
In fact, the image of her was stolen from a comic on-line video by her production company, Strictly Viral Productions.
“The repercussions have been huge,” Packard told KTLA in a phone interview. “It’s been a really terrible experience. The whole thing.”
Unbelievable! But of course ads depicting rape are not new. Women are often shown in violent situations in high fashion ads. You may recall the famous Dolce and Gabbana ad depicting what looks like a gang rape in progress.
And you may have seen the series of Calvin Klein ads, which were banned in Australia. Here is one of the banned ads.
Why is sexual violence being used to sell products? The Belvedere ad appears to have been aimed at men, but the Dolce and Gabanna and Calvin Klein ads were designed to appear in women’s fashion magazines lke Vogue. Do women really respond to violent ads by running out and buying whatever product they are selling? I came across a 2010 article at Alternet that addressed this question.
To learn more about this issue, researchers, Barbara J. Phillips and Edward F. McQuarrie, interviewed regular readers of fashion magazines and discovered that most women don’t consider the implications of violent sexist ads, but rather, they gravitate to them for the tantalizing narrative.
They recently published their findings in the Journal of Consumer Research and explain that the women who liked such ads, “Would be transported into the story world set in motion by the ad’s pictures, asking themselves, ‘What is happening here?’ and ‘What will happen next? These women would immerse themselves in the images, examining its lighting, colors, lines, composition, and creativity.”
Unfortunately, the “researchers” only talked to 18 women, so this conclusion is really based on case studies and not particularly scientific. Experts in Australia argued that ads like this could encourage gang rape.
Clinical psychologist Alison Grundy, who works with sex abuse victims, said advertisers were reaching a dangerous new low by using sexual violence as a marketing tool.
“If we continue to subject future generations of young men to great barrages of aggressive, misogynist, over-sexualized and violent imagery in pornography, movies, computer games and advertising, we will continue to see the rates of sexual violence against women and children that continue unabated today. Or worse,” she said.
The thing is, we’re bombarded with these images all our lives. No matter how hard we try to protect ourselves from them, we’re going to be exposed to them at least occasionally. Frankly, the people who create these ads are also products of our rape culture. They have grown up seeing images of sexualized violence. No wonder so many women are raped and murdered! Young women especially are treated by our culture as objects for men to use and discard.
What do you think? Feel free to discuss this or any other topic in the comments.
New Accuser Claims Jerry Sandusky Raped Him in Penn State Office in 2004
Posted: December 30, 2011 Filed under: child sexual abuse, children | Tags: child sexual abuse, Jerry Sandusky, Penn State, rape 6 CommentsAccording to a just published Fox News story, a 19-year-old boy and his family have filed a civil suit against Jerry Sandusky, accused child sexual abuser and former Penn State football coach.
A teenager says he was raped by Jerry Sandusky inside his office in Penn State University’s football building in 2004 — two years after the ex-football coach was said to have had his campus keys taken away and was banned from bringing children into the building, the boy’s lawyer told FoxNews.com.
The now-19-year-old says Sandusky sodomized him when he was 12 years old and attending a summer camp program on the Penn State campus run by Second Mile, Sandusky’s charity organization. The accuser has initiated a civil suit against Sandusky, Second Mile and Penn State University.
The DA’s office is investigating according to the story, because the statute of limitations for this crime doesn’t run out until 12 years after the victims’ 18th birthday. Here’s the boy’s description of what happened to him at the age of 12, shortly after his mother died.
Sandusky targeted the boy during a question-and-answer session—part of the summer camp program and held inside the Penn State football building—that involved the coach quizzing the children on various topics. The camper with the correct answer received a prize, Schmidt said.
Near the end of the session, Schmidt said, Sandusky asked a trivia question relating to a quote from a U.S. president, and the boy was the only one who knew the answer.
“Sandusky said he was out of prizes but told him to follow him,” Schmidt said. “He gets him in a room. He’s on one side of the desk, the boy is on other. [Sandusky] proceeded to engage him in conversation — he had lost his mother, his mother died the year before, he had a very hard time, they were very close — they talked for a while about that. Then [Sandusky] pulled out a glass with alcohol in it and told him to drink it. Then he sodomized him.”
After the alleged assault, Schmidt said, Sandusky helped clean up the boy, gave him the two mementos and took him back outside to join the rest of the campers, passing him off to a counselor.
This was two years after Mike McQueary reported seeing Sandusky raping a young boy in the football building showers. Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley (now on leave) claimed he had banned Sandusky from bringing children into the football building. But Sandusky’s attorney said that Curley and Sandusky never discussed such and ban, and Sandusky apparently still had keys and an office to use during Second Mile camps.
Currently Sandusky is out on $250,000 bail and is confined to his home and required to wear an electronic monitoring device.
Sandusky secured his release using $200,000 in real estate holdings and a $50,000 certified check provided by his wife, Dorothy, according to online court records. He will be subject to electronic monitoring under the terms of his release.
Is anyone checking to make sure Sandusky’s wife doesn’t invite some kids over to visit him? It is impossible for me to believe that this woman didn’t know her husband was going into his basement in the middle of the night to sexually abuse the boys who frequently stayed with them. And if she didn’t know then, she does now.
Jerry Sandusky needs to be held without bail until his trial. He is an constant and ongoing danger to children.
