Late Afternoon Open Thread: Town Hall Debate Songified

Obama and Romney join the would-be motown band, Crowley and the Town Hallians, in the 3rd Presidential Debate.

LYRICS

Crowley
Welcome to the town hall debate
where ordinary people talk to the candidates

Skippy
The ladies tell me they like a man with insurance
So how do I get some without paying a billion dollars for it
Tell me, who’s gonna work it out, baby
Who’s gonna work it out?

Obama
This is not just a health issue
It’s an economic issue
This is money out of that family’s pocket

Romney
If Obamacare is implemented fully
It’ll be another 2500 on top
You’ve seen health insurance premiums, gone up
Incomes go down

Obama
I said that we would make sure that insurance companies
Can’t jerk you around

CHORUS:
Skippy
What you gonna do?
Romney
We should make sure that our legal system works
Crowley
Oh, what you gonna do?
Obama
Go after gang bangers
we’re gonna get it done
In a second term
Skippy
Oh, what you gonna do?
Obama
Take the money we’ve been spending on war
Romney
More drilling
Obama
Double our exports
Skippy
Who’s gonna work it out, baby, who’s gonna work it out?

Chad
Since I got out of college, I’ve been living in my mom’s basement
How are you gonna get me a job before she goes totally apestuff?
Who’s gonna work it out, baby
Who’s gonna work it out?

Romney
I want you to be able to get a job
I know what it takes
To make America the most attractive place
That’s why I wanna bring down the tax rates

Obama
Low-skill jobs are not gonna come back
I want jobs with a high wage
If we’re adding to our deficits for tax cuts
We will lose that race

Cynthia
Just because I am a lady
My salary’s a little bit less
How can every woman get equal pay?
And please stop looking at my breasts

Romney
I had the chance to pull together a cabinet
I brought us binders full of women
My chief of staff said
“I need to be making dinner for my kids”
So we said fine

Obama
My grandmother worked her way up to become
Vice president of a local bank, but she hit the glass ceiling
Now I’ve got two daughters and I wanna make the same opportunities
That anybody’s sons have

[CHORUS]

Obama: From the governor, we haven’t heard any specifics beyond Big Bird
Romney: That’s completely false
Obama: Not true
Romney: Absolutely true
Obama: Just isn’t true
Crowley: Wooo

The morning thread is getting pretty long, so here’s a fresh one to continue the conversation.

Undecided voter who asked the question about equal pay for women is still undecided.

It took roughly 30 seconds after she asked about the wage gap last night for the right to start calling Katherine Fenton a left-wing conspiracy, vainly trying to connect her to someone who worked for Code Pink, calling her a “feminazi,” and a “party girl.” Reached by Salon at her home in Floral Park, N.Y., today, Fenton confirmed that she’s no plant. She is, she says, a 24-year-old pre-K teacher and an undecided voter. Still undecided, in fact. And not a feminist.

Here’s what Fenton asked last night: “In what new ways do you intend to rectify inequalities in the workplace? Specifically regarding females making only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn.”

    And she’s not a feminist.

“I’m a 24-year-old woman that lives in the United States and feels like I should be treated the same as anyone else. That makes me a normal human being.”

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

I asked her to clarify how she defined feminism, given that she’d told me she was passionate about “women’s equality in the workforce” and had said, “I’m very protective of my reproductive rights.” Fenton said, “I’m not only concerned with women.”

What the hell does that mean?

      • RalphB's avatar RalphB says:

I feel for that young lady. Though I have no damn clue how she could be undecided at this point. She’s has personally profited from the ACA and still doesn’t get it? She must pay no attention to the larger world around her, or politics at least.

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

It means she’s a feminist but she doesn’t know it. Undecided voters are very confused people.

      • pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

        best comment
On the other hand, it’s quite sad that any young person would denigrate a movement that has done so much to promote her own social & legal equality.

Ralph, it’s like small business people that can’t see the difference between themselves and someone like mitt. Obama did a lot in the stimulus to help them.

If y’all get the chance you need to go to Cannonfire and read the 2 most recent posts he has up.

There is an October Surprise scheduled to be released by a mysterious website called “The October Surprise” to the internet and twitter on Monday evening before the Tuesday debate. Joe’s post of 10/17 talks about a Salon article by Craig Unger published on October 1, where Unger describes an October surprise coming from the GOP concerning the Libya Counsulate attack.

Joe’s post today 10/18 ties together some very strange information (a little of it supplied by yours truly) that indicates that this mysterious new website might be the vehicle used to deliver the October Surprise that Craig Unger describes in his October 1 article.

This all ties back to the birthers and Swift Boat Veterans. It’s a bit convoluted, but it’s all too coincidental for words. I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop, this may be it. If you have time read Joe Cannon’s posts, you won’t be sorry.

Info on a couple of the site’s developers. Looks like a hoax or marketing gimmick, maybe?

      • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Thanks for linking that Ralph. I think it raises more questions than it answers, but if it’s a marketing hoax maybe all of the attention will scare them enough to shut them down.

I don’t want to go through another 11th hour GOP assassination of a Dem candidate. They took down Al Gore with all of the Love Story, Internet inventor, Pot Pusher and the SCOTUS theft. Then they took down Kerry with Swift Boat Veterans. And as we all know they’ve spent the last 4 years spinning tall tales about Obama, the latest being “Dreams from my real Father”. Not so ironically Corsi has been involved in much of it and if Romney is in bed with Corsi, something is going on.

Nothing gets the ‘base’ repubthugs base stirred up like security, Muslim wedding rings – they lose all consciousnesses of reality. How many times can they be fooled? The world’s greatest patriots, lovers of America and the troops never questioned the number of American troops who died for that war to find WMD – I will never understand. Dupes – they are the exact opposite of what they say they value. idgits – I bet they could play hide the peanut for hours, days – enjoying all the suspense. idgits Skydancing is so appreciated, I read everyday – don’t have the energy to post much. All here are authentic – you do have Democratic values, you know the score and still stay and fight. Thank you all – posters and commenters. Obama Leads In Iowa And Wisconsin, Swing State Polls Show

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

All right! I’m not worried about Gallup. We’ll have to wait a few days to see whether Obama got a bump from the debate. And then there’s another debate on Monday night.

    • RalphB's avatar RalphB says:

Nate Silver comments on the Gallup tracking poll which shows Mitt Romney leading President Obama by seven points today — results which “are deeply inconsistent with the results that other polling firms are showing in the presidential race, and the Gallup poll has a history of performing very poorly when that is the case.”

“In 2000, for example, Gallup had George W. Bush 16 points ahead among likely voters in polling it conducted in early August. By Sept. 20, about six weeks later, they had Al Gore up by 10 points instead: a 26-point swing toward Mr. Gore over the course of a month and a half. No other polling firm showed a swing remotely that large. Then in October 2000, Gallup showed a 14-point swing toward Mr. Bush over the course of a few days, and had him ahead by 13 points on Oct. 27 — just 10 days before an election that ended in a virtual tie.”

      • roofingbird's avatar roofingbird says:

I think there should be a poll on the number of Repubs vs the number of Dems that still have a house phone to be contacted by a poll. Then I think we should have a poll on the number of cell phones that can be found in a nationwide phone book and available for polls.

    • RalphB's avatar RalphB says:

Here are the latest polls from the battleground states, all of today’s:

      Florida: Obama 47%, Romney 44% (Newsmax/Zogby)

      Michigan: Obama 52%, Romney 46% (EPIC-MRA)
Michigan: Obama 44%, Romney 41% (Denno Research)

North Carolina: Romney 52%, Obama 46% (Rasmussen)

Ohio: Obama 49%, Romney 48% (Rasmussen)

Virginia: Obama 49%, Romney 48% (Public Policy Polling)

      Wisconsin: Obama 51%, Romney 43% (NBC News/Marist)

Honestly I think it’s about time. We liberals hesitate to call out others when they lie, cheat and steal because we don’t want to be viewed as aggressive. The opposition takes advantage of that fear to spread lies and make attacks – most of which are unfounded, but anything to get the lies into print so that their multiple minions via Drudge etc can run with it.

me, too! And the best news I heard all day is if Obama wins——

        By Callum Borchers, Globe Correspondent

Ann Romney said on Thursday that she did not want her husband, Mitt, the Republican nominee for president, to seek the White House again this year and added that if he loses on Nov. 6, the former Massachusetts governor will retire from politics.

“He will not run again — nor will I do anything like that,” Ann Romney said on ABC’s “The View.”

        • ecocatwoman's avatar ecocatwoman says:

This contradicts what Mitt said during the Republican primaries. I swear I remember him saying that Ann told him “America needs you as president.” Paraphrasing, but the gist was that according to MIttens it was Ann who convinced him to run even though she had said after his last run for prez that she wouldn’t do it again. Does anyone in that family ever tell the truth?

      • HT's avatar HT says:

I think Ann is dreaming in technicolour. Mitt has devoted his life to running for President. I don’t think he will or can stop. Something about a Mormon as president.

      • pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

HT, well Mitt was 54 before he could find any qualified women. So I guess he’ll just keep running.

      • HT's avatar HT says:

PD, of course, now that Tagg is out there flapping his jaws, perhaps Mitt might step aside to let his son go forward with the Mormon prediction. Always a possibility. Mind you, the few times I’ve seen Tagg, I don’t think he will resonate with the average American.

      • pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

ecocatwoman, NO one in the republican party can tell the truth. But this family, it is my opinion the Romney’s have bred a strain of liars to spread through out this country worse than the Black Plauge. We’re doomed.

  7. Linda C's avatar Linda C says:

Just remember the voting machines in Ohio are owned by Romney’s friends. So here we go again, let alone Husted here has been trying to block early voting as well as other chicanery that can only come from an Ohio republican

    • ecocatwoman's avatar ecocatwoman says:

Between the voting machines & voter suppression efforts in important states, I don’t think we can put much credence in any of the polls. Likely voters may show up & get turned away. And I feel certain most of those sent home, hat in hand, plan to vote Dem.
