Open Thread: SAG it!

I thought the Sky Dancing community could use the momentary break from politics… please feel free to live-blog in the comments with us!

Via Reuters/The Wrap:

The Scrren [sic] Actors Guild will honor its own Sunday night at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, live on TNT and TBS at 8 PM ET.

Exactly what comprises “its own” may be changing for the actors. Over the weekend, executive boards at both SAG and AFTRA approved a merger plan that would bring under one umbrella SAG’s roughly 120,000 members and AFTRA’s 70,000.  Both memberships have to approve the plan for it to take effect.

Screen Actors Guild Awards 48th Annual Life Achievement Award

  • MARY TYLER MOORE

Okay, I’m not really up to speed on the SAG awards other than to say…

a) as far as TV awards go, I’m rooting for Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Betty White– she’s nominated twice! Work it, Sue Anne Nivens… neat little synchronicity for that and Mary Tyler Moore getting the Lifetime Achievement Award tonight.

b) Motion Pictures…my votes go to both The Help’s Jessica Chastain and Miss Viola Davis herself… Speaking of which, I don’t have an Iphone, but if I did, I would so totally buy this phone case (memorable line from the movie)… this cracks me up and gives me the warm fuzzies at the same time:

Turning the soapbox over to y’all…please have at it.

  1. ohhhh nooo… not their scripted “I am an actor” introductions… sigh! Sometimes they’re funny, but mostly they’re boring and canned…

  2. Christopher Plummer scores the SAG for supporting actor… he got the Golden Globe too..

Plummer just called acting the “world’s second oldest profession”…got a chuckle from the audience.

  3. Diane Lane is amazingly beautiful. Just sayin’.

  4. Octavia Spencer (also from The help) takes it for supporting… her speech was lovely, she dedicated her win to “the downtrodden…” and talked about all those in need.

  5. pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

I really hope Krya Sedgwick wins tonight. She has never won this award. The Closer is a wonderful departure from the “I have to be Macho male to be effective”. This character is written so well. She has normal flaws but is smart and uses the southern charm (stereo-tpye, slow, stupid, trashy) to make suspects spill their their guts. I enjoy how she gets “The confession”.

    • Don’t watch much tv, hence haven’t seen the Closer… but I Love Kyra!

Her sister role in the movie “Something to Talk About” (Julia Roberts, Dennis Quaid starrer) is still one of my favorite movie characters!

    • Yes, yes 7 yes. The whole show is so well written. I love how someone (usually Fritz) says something that makes Brenda make a connection to solving the case. I’m going to miss this show so much.

  6. Alec Baldwin won for 30 Rock (I guess, I tuned out…)… Meh….

  7. BETTY WHITE FOR THE WIN! 🙂 🙂

  8. Modern family wins for TV comedy ensemble… no surprise there

    • It’s been years since I really liked any of the comedy shows. I initially loved the Big Bang but it then devolved in the same theme – “will I get laid or when will I get laid.” Painfully obvious that most sitcoms are written by boys who claim to be adult men. Last fave was Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (1 season only) & Sports Night – both Aaron Sorkin shows.

      • as far as new(er) TV comedies go, I really like Up All Night, Portlandia (on IFC), and Enlightened (can’t remember if that’s comedy or drama actually)…

  9. pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

I hope “Major Crimes” is as good. I love Mary McDonald, too. The same writers, James Duff from The Closer, etc.

    • I think most of the cast is returning. I love Mary McDonnell (I think that’s right(. Or as I like to call her – Stands With A Fist (Dances With Wolves reference)/ Her & Brenda were great foils.

      • pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

You are right on the spelling of McDonnell. Love, love her “Captain Raydor”. “OHOOO, that woman”!

  10. Glenn Close looks like a female body builder in that dress. Yuck.

  11. Kate Winslet… not here to accept… but she won for Mildred Pierce … Go Kate, consummate actor that she is! 🙂

  12. Paul Giamatti wins… for HBO’s(?)Too Big to Fail… not there to accept.

Haven’t seen that, but I saw Giamatti in Ides of March recently. He was quite good in that role, even though the movie was underwhelming.

  13. Don’t have HBO, Showtime, etc. so didn’t see any of these. I love Guy Pierce – he was wonderful in LA Confidential – one of my all time favorite films.

  14. long commercial break

  15. I really like Kristen Wiig in this darker hair color/style…

  16. Dick Van Dyke in Da House!

    • here to present MTM with the lifetime achievement award, of course.

      • I LOVE this retrospective clip roll of Mary Tyler Moore’s career, narrated by Dick Van Dyke… I hope it goes up on youtube soon. It’s well-written and awesome.

        • I grew up with those shows. The MTM show was not to be missed & Betty White as Sue Ann Nevins was hilarious. What a great cast and terrific show. Guess I’m old fashioned (since I’m old) – those are type of comedies that I still like.

She was reading her speech. I think she’s had some serious medical problems lately. Based on the dates & age she gave in the speech, she’s 73 or 74.

      • Mary’s speech was great… Dick Van Dyke just gave her a peck on the cheek.

  17. I’ve seen an episode or two of Harry’s Law… go Kathy Bates!

  18. pdgrey's avatar pdgrey says:

Too bad, I really wanted to here her say, Thank yew, thank you sooo much!

  19. REally need to see The Artist! I can’t believe I forgot to see it before Awards season. I was so excited when I saw the trailers in the theatre…

    • ohhhh Steve Buscheme for Boardwalk Empire beat Cranston…

well at least Kelsey Grammar wasn’t even in the running, let alone the winner (as with the Globes )

      • minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

Steve Buscheme is one of those actors that makes the best out of every roll he takes. It reminds me of Peter Lorre. Not the eye thing….or that Buscheme is you know…funny looking, but no matter how small or large his roll is, there is always something special about his performance.

      • Buscheme is a very fine actor… I’m just superbiased–Breaking Bad is like a cinephile’s dream in television show format (imho) 🙂

  20. Meryl Streep introducing the In Memoriam…

  21. I hope Breaking Bad wins for Ensemble Drama cast since Steve B. won the acting award

  22. Best male actor in a leading role — motion picture

Actor goes to…. Jean Dujardin (The Artist)!!

    Yay!!!!

  23. Leading female actor in a movie…

    And the actor goes to…

  24. THE HELP wins for Motion Picture ENSEMBLE!

    • Looks like I chose the right graphic to close the post up top with 🙂

      • WOWOWOW…

Viola Davis just said… “The stain of racism and sexism affects all of us…”

and she said something about “ordinary” people..

WOW! I need to get the transcript. As I just told my sister–Viola is an earthly goddess.

  25. And… it’s over!

Telecast is repeating (on TNT anyway… doesn’t look like on TBS)

    • Thanks for doing this Wonk. Sorry I split for the last hour – I just didn’t want to wait until next Sunday to see this DA ep as a repeat. You have to get this on Netflix – it is soooo good.

      • My pleasure 🙂 DA is on my list!

      • Beata's avatar Beata says:

Downton Abbey was a heartbreaker tonight. I don’t watch very much TV but DA is such a wonderful series. Will Cousin Matthew and Lady Mary marry? Will Anna and Bates live happily ever after? Will Bates’ wife get her comeuppance? If you know, don’t tell me!

      • minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

I just looked up Downtown Abbey and saw that Julian Fellows is the man behind that series. He was the screenwriter for Gosford Park, and back in the eighties, he played the Prince of Wales in this mini-series called The Scarlet Pimpernel with Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour and Ian Mckellen. I had a huge thing for Anthony Andrews…he was gorgeous.

I just realized I put an extra w in there…should be Downton Abbey.
