The question on every one’s
mind is will it be real this time instead of some show that shuts down the minute the press leaves the room. (You know when Barny Frank and Chris Dodd trot out the single malt and the Cuban Cigars and party down to Chain, Chain, Chain … chain of Fools.
President Barack Obama is expected Wednesday to propose the most sweeping reorganization of financial-market supervision since the 1930s, a revamp that would touch almost every corner of banking from how mortgages are underwritten to the way exotic financial instruments are traded.
We shall see, we shall see. In today’s WAPO, Timothy Geithner and Lawrence Summers are inkling their strategy in A New Financial Foundation. They identify five key problems in the article they see with the current regulation regime.
First, existing regulation focuses on the safety and soundness of individual institutions but not the stability of the system as a whole. As a result, institutions were not required to maintain sufficient capital or liquidity to keep them safe in times of system-wide stress. In a world in which the troubles of a few large firms can put the entire system at risk, that approach is insufficient.
Capital requirements are always nice in a fractional reserve system. After all, banks only make money by lending out the funds they hold at a higher rate, but this needs to be closely examined; especially with capital from government sources at the risk or implied government guarantee of assets. I talked before about Stiglitz’s concept of Banks Too Big to be Restructured. Many of us feel that these banks don’t need to be better regulatedbut completely busted up. The joint statement appears to say that the Obama Adminstration is prepared to let them dither in Zombie land while making them come up with more capital. (The only thing I can say is how long and with whose money?) I call this passage a stinker, but I’ll wait to see the details in the bill itself. If they regulate it the way they regulated Fannie and Freddie, hide your savings under your nearest mattress and try to get all your income in Eurodollars.
The administration’s proposal will address that problem by raising capital and liquidity requirements for all institutions, with more stringent requirements for the largest and most interconnected firms. In addition, all large, interconnected firms whose failure could threaten the stability of the system will be subject to consolidated supervision by the Federal Reserve, and we will establish a council of regulators with broader coordinating responsibility across the financial system.
You’ve just taken then Oath of Office and …

What? Wasn’t that what the election was all about?
According to Fox news this morning, Obama will meet with congressional leaders this week to get them started on an economic stimulus plan.
The first order of business for Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress is to enact the still-emerging economic recovery plan as soon as possible.
The plan, which some Obama aides think could swell to about $850 billion after negotiations with lawmakers, would be the largest investment in public infrastructure since the federal highway system was established in the 1950s. It also would provide tens of billions of dollars in aid to financially strapped states
Biden, Reid and Pelosi will be forming and enacting economic policy after a few kumbhaya, come to jesus moments with Republicans. Then President Obama will begin a ‘barnstorming’ tour of the country to drum up support for the plan while every one else back in Washington does all the work.
Meanwhile, at the CNN Political ticker: Clinton Likely in for Bumpy Ride. Evidently the news media thinks that the Secretary of State is in charge of foreign policy.
Has anybody read the constitution recently or are we about to see the birth of the European-style presidency here in the U.S.? Will Obama become a constitutional monarch like Queen Elizabeth waving his pretty hands to his subjects while His Majesty’s minister’s do all the hard work. This was something that I’d never really given thought to during the election, but as of late I’m speculating about it continually.
Instead of one Cheney, will we get two?
I have to admit that I’m going to be pretty happy if Secretary of State Clinton and Vice President of the Middle Class Biden can effectively use their joint knowledge and experience to improve the country and the world situation. Both of them are without a doubt two of the most qualified people on the planet. Maybe I’m wishful thinking on one level because the degree of inexperience and lack of depth and breadth of knowledge by president teleprompter jesus just continually flabbergasts me. He’s hopeless off script. HOWEVER, and this is a HUGE HOWEVER, is this in keeping with the spirit of democratically elected officials as well as our form of government?
Are we moving from an imperial presidency to a historical symbol presidency ? And by whose authority have we morphed the role of the president?
Pinch me if I’m wrong here. Tell me on one level to relax and be glad the grown ups are in charge. Still, there’s that little bit of Colonial Dame/DAR member (my mom registered me, really) that worries about the role of the presidency in terms of our Constitution. (Silly me.) If we’re going to amend the constitution, shouldn’t we at least get to vote first?
Senator Joe Biden (MBNA-DE)
Posted: October 16, 2008 Filed under: U.S. Economy, Uncategorized | Tags: Bankruptcy Bill, Biden, Credit Card Companies, Deceptive Pracitces, Deleware, Levin, MBNA Comments Off on Senator Joe Biden (MBNA-DE)I about fell off my chair listening to the third presidential debates when Senator Obama suggested that Senator Biden was some how a champion of middle America and the little guy. I was beginning to think that Obama had some how gotten into his own koolaid. Joe Biden, especially when it comes to economic issues, is not the friend of working families who get in a tight pinch. Here’s the comments and here’s the original transcript.
OBAMA: Well, Joe Biden, I think, is one of the finest public servants that has served in this country. It’s not just that he has some of the best foreign policy credentials of anybody. And Democrats and Republicans alike, I think, acknowledge his expertise there.
But it’s also that his entire life he has never forgotten where he came from, coming from Scranton, fighting on behalf of working families, remembering what it’s like to see his father lose his job and go through a downward spiral economically.
And, as a consequence, his consistent pattern throughout his career is to fight for the little guy. That’s what he’s done when it comes to economic policies that will help working families get a leg up.
Senator Obama evidently has forgotten about two things for which we can thank Joe Biden. The first is the current bankruptcy bill which makes it difficult for folks who get into financial trouble for things like unemployment and overwhelming health catastrophic costs to ever recover from. The second is that he’s never met a credit card company supported bill he doesn’t like.
Here’s what one liberal blogger said about that bill while Biden was still running for President. Notice that it also references another ‘progressive’ blog.
The bankruptcy bill is such a cruel piece of legislation, especially to single mothers and people without health insurance, that Kos crossed Biden right off his list of potential candidates. I’m unaware of any major or medium size blogger that supports Biden’s campaign…and it really all comes back to the bankruptcy bill.
There was also this (as reported by the NY Time) floating around concerning dealings behind the passage of the same bankruptcy bill.
During the years that Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. was helping the credit card industry win passage of a law making it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy protection, his son had a consulting agreement that lasted five years with one of the largest companies pushing for the changes, aides to Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign acknowledged Sunday.
Senator McCain voted for this bill as well as Senator Biden. Senator Obama voted against this bill, but seems to have conveniently forgotten it. The NY Times also reported, in that same article cited above, this:
Consumer advocates say that Senator Biden was one of the first Democratic leaders to support the bankruptcy bill, and he voted for it four times — in 1998, 2000, 2001 and in March 2005, when its final version passed the Senate by a vote of 74 to 25.
Travis Plunkett, legislative director of the Consumer Federation of America, a consumer group that opposed the bill, said that Senator Biden had provided a “veneer of bipartisanship” that eventually helped the credit card companies win over other Democrats. “He provided cover to other Democrats to do what the credit industry was urging them to do,” Mr. Plunkett said.
Here’s more on “Credit Card Joe” from the National Review Online. When Joe was in some financial trouble himself, he got help from the CEO of MBNA.
John Cochran, the company’s vice-chairman and chief marketing officer, did pay top dollar for Biden’s house, and MBNA gave Cochran a lot of money—$330,000—to help with “expenses” related to the move. A few months after the sale, as Biden’s re-election effort got under way, MBNA’s top executives contributed generously to his campaign in a series of coordinated donations that sidestepped the limits on contributions by the company’s political action committee. And then, a short time after the election, MBNA hired Biden’s son for a lucrative job in which, according to bank officials, he is being groomed for a senior management position.
It is possible that the next financial debacle comes from this kissing cousin to the subprime market: credit cards. They are also users of some of the most deceptive lending practices you can find. You’ll recognize some of these I’m sure. How about that Over Limit Fee and bump you get in an interest rate when the company just okays a purchase rather than rejecting it? Here’s one that is my personal “favorite” since it is an ongoing F**k for me at the moment. It is the fine print that says the bank will apply all payments to the lowest interest rate bearing things first. You can’t even send them a specific payment for anything else. When I tried to pay off a $40 cash advance I had to pull during my flight from Hurricane Katrina (which is the ONLY cash advance I’ve ever had and due to my banks being closed and underwater) I was told I’d have to pay the entire balance off. I pulled $40 to help pay a Toll for the Kansas Tollway on my way to my daughter in Nebraska. That $40 is now a balance of $254.76 because I can’t get the silly thing down far enough to even dream of paying off that. It’s the very last thing they will EVER apply my payments towards so thanks Joe, thanks for supporting those credit card companies!! I have to say you’re a real peach by my standards as a solidly middle class person and little guy!
So, my next question is do you think Joe’s been a part of this discussion OR even a sponsor of bills to eliminate these unfair practices? Nope. The so-called Dodd-Levin The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act has a few sponsors listed here at Senator Levin’s website. It’s worth a read because it is a bill that would definitely help the middle class that relies so heavily on credit card debt. Is this going to be yet another missed chance at regulating an industry (like the subprime market) that goes into fueling a financial crisis? If so, what will be the terms of the bailouts and where will Senator Biden, MBNA-DE stand?
Hurricane Sarah hits the lower 50! MSM rushes to LOW GROUND!
Posted: September 9, 2008 Filed under: No Obama, PUMA | Tags: Biden, mccain, Obama, Palin, Presidential campaign Comments Off on Hurricane Sarah hits the lower 50! MSM rushes to LOW GROUND!I just spent a good week with nothing but a radio. It was also broadcasting nothing but Gustav news 24-7. So, i’m back reading the MSM and trying to catch up with the blogosphere. I feel like I’ve emerged from a cacoon to find the oxygen sucked out of the presidential campaign by Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. While I was concerned with Hurricane Gustav, Hurricane Sarah was the story every where else.
It appears the press has spent the majority of that week vetting Palin. I wonder where all that hyper-vetting was when we needed that done with Senator Barrack Obama. Will they ever get around to checking out his relationship with all those Chicago thugs? How about figuring out if he still holds citizenship in Indonesia?
Yesterday was a treat for those of us starved for some one who really did look presidential. Hillary gave a great speech in Florida. Too bad she was having to ride to the rescue of the hapless DNC candidate. The Obama campaign is now begging her to offset the huge momentum coming from the McCain campaign after the suprise vp pick. Hillary has even taken on the white knite mantle in such low low places as Daily Kampf and Huffington Poop. Ah, what could have been …
Obama looked positively starved for oxygen and tired on George’s ABC morning talk show to the point he said he was having to take hits for his “muslim faith”. He was so completely unaware of his gaffe, George had to remind him he was a christian. Meanwhile, Biden showed he may be part of the Washington problem, but at least he understands the issues by discussing the current bail out plans of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Biden is the ultimate Washington insider and there is absolutely no way the Obama campaign is going to successful repackage this canned ham.
McCain is just smiling and basking in the Palin glow as he enjoys a much bigger post-convention bounce than Obama. He’s decided team campaigning sells well, and the power duo have been going from city to city while attracting crowds evoking the rock star label again. It also looks like McCain has pre-empted the change mantra and is successfully riding the maverick pony with his new wild west sidekick. Ah, the American Western, what a completely wild, wild image.
Meanwhile, the NY Times says Obama’s fundraising is suffering from the same anemia shown by the candidate. It appears there’s a max to Obamamania and it was reached a long time ago.
Even Pumas have changed the conversation. Overexposure abounds!Obama is so yesterday! The focus in the PUMA movement has gone three ways now. First, there are those intent on reforming the current democratic party and the process that keeps giving us losers. The Denver Group has gone that direction. I’m not sure if an outsider movement can overcome the most insider of problems, but more power to them. We need to get rid of caucuses and reform the primary system for both parties. This is an ambitious, long term goal. A second group is focused on Hillary and pressuring the senate to recognize her as senate majority leader. This is again an outsider movement focused on an insider problem. I think we can all say that the democratic congressional leadership is a big disappointment. It’s only real accomplishment has been earning congress a lower approval rating than President Bush. What exactly does it say when you’re more unpopular than the worst president in history? The third group has jumped on the McCain wagon train and will ride it until Hillary comes back into play again in 2012. I’m not there with McCain and his dependence on fundie fanatics. I think he can handle the presidency but I just can’t support irresponsible tax cuts and anyone who hangs with folks that take the bible literally. I didn’t spend so much of my life sitting in university classrooms and studying science to turn my brain off in the voting booth. I just can’t hold my nose and vote for someone beholden to the religious right.
Personally, I think it’s important we start to focus downticket and ensure a reasonable group of senators and representatives will hit Washington to ensure that McCain’s Maverick side will be rewarded while his pandering to the social right side goes completely punished. Meanwhile, as Hurricane Ike becomes less relevant to Louisiana and I return my focus to research and the blood sport of politics, I’m taking bets on how long the Palin momentum will continue and if the Obama campaign can get a jumpstart again.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the misogyny that is deeply embedded in US culture. We’ve seen the re-ignition of the mommy wars which is unwinnable as was the cold war. I’ve also seen perfectly good progressives tell jokes like ‘well, at least she has TWO things going for her’. I may just return to my old feminist roots and burn a few bras. One thing hasn’t changed for me though, I’m not voting for Obama.
