Throwdown Thursday

So, I’ m thinking we need some kind of new thread. The morning one is getting rather full. Thought I’d share a few things I’ve been thinking about today and encourage you to do the same.

LauraFirst, if you are in town, please come to my favorite Rap Star’s debut!  Actually, she’s my neighbor too. This is 91 year old Laura Swinney, the sage of Poland Avenue.  She is doing her thing at Siberia.  One of the things that always amazes me about this city is the interesting people I meet.  This is especially true of the local women.  I have met a mistress of Humprey Bogart and one of the original Rockettes.  Gives me some hope.

So, it’s an open thread with an open mind.

What’s on yours?

    Bloomberg:

The U.S. economy may prove more prone to deflation than the Federal Reserve acknowledges and that may present a reason to keep monetary policy loose, according to a model created by Wells Fargo Securities LLC.

Seeing Facebook pay $19 billion for WhatApp has me thinking about bursting bubbles again. Even with 450 mil users that’s a pant load of money for an app.

My house is going up at average of 75% a year now. I’m kinda worried about an asset bubble frankly.

Better to worry before than after I’m sure. If this kind of unsupportable growth becomes more general, then it may be time to flee.

Yeah. I have to talk to my sister. I’m still thinking I’m better in Seattle in the long run despite my love affair with New Orleans.

If I were in New Orleans, I don’t know if I could leave. Although I really always hated the awful humidity. It’s just unique. Walking around in the older parts, especially the Quarter, you can forget you’re in the US cause it sure doesn’t feel like it.

That has to be such a tough decision Dak, when you love the place you live but hate what is happening to it…yet have the opportunity to move to another wonderful city. My friend Jill loves Seattle, she just bought a house there and it is super cool!

catching up late…..Hey y’all, come on up to Seattle! Coffee, marriage equality, sensible recreational weed law, but only 1 Socialist city councilmember (so far). Really nice weather, too (counting July, Aug & Sept. that is). You’ll only have to shovel out your sidewalk and driveway once every other decade.

But it is impossible to beat New Orleans for the music and related culture. And housing prices here, while not as hideous as San Fran, and lower than back in ’07/’08, are still really high for the person with a median income. Sales tax is regressive, too. Pros/cons anywhere; you have to pick what balances out the best for you.

My daughter is happily settled in the skagit valley now and my son in law will be at the UW med center starting in June. Dad really needs to live with some one so I need to have a talk with my sister.

Don’t bogart that joint, my friend, pass it over to me.

Some interesting things behind that lawyer that wanted “noise” out of his french quarter neighborhood:

    http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/02/lawyer_in_new_orleans_noise_or.html

I wrote pretty long email to Palmer appealing to my authority as an economist and musician. She was the one city council member I singled out. Seems he threatened her and some other folks. Very interesting.

    • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

Smith sent Palmer an email Jan. 7, that said, “Word on the street is you are trying to kill the noise ordinance for Robert (Watters). Tell me it ain’t so. We must talk.”

The next day, Smith sent Palmer the following email:

“If any of this is true you won’t be electable as dog catcher by the time I am finished with you. I really can’t believe it but now have 2 investigators on it and intend to depose Robert Watters under oath. I sincerely hope none of this is true. You only promised me one thing when Wilma (Heaton) and I got you elected. I expect you to stop these people who are attacking me personally and pass this legislation. Your victory party was at my house for christs sake and after all that a strip club owner (Robert Watters) has become your confidant and spokesperson.”

She sent the emails to the police.

Battleground Texas is registering a lot of voters, and it looks like the members of the national conservative grifter network are getting a little nervous:

Conservative activist James O’Keefe has released another covert video of Battleground Texas volunteers. In this one, a voter registration coordinator collects phone numbers as part of the registration process, something that the office of Secretary of State Nandita Berry tells the Tribune’s Alana Rocha and Jay Root could be a “potential level of offense.”
“Whether Battleground did anything wrong in the process comes down to how the law is interpreted,” wrote Rocha and Root. “Section 13.004 of the Texas Election Code says, in part, that county registration officials may not ‘transcribe, copy or otherwise record a telephone number furnished on a registration application.’”
Opinion was split among authorities queried by the reporters. A Berry spokesman suggested that Battleground Texas’ volunteer deputy registrars would have the same liability that applies to county officials. That view was not shared by election law expert Buck Wood, who said the statutory language makes it clear that these volunteer registrars are not county officials.
