DNC Live Blog: Gabby Looks Radiant and Good Bye to Geraldine, Day 3 Part 2

Gabby Giffords Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance moved many to tears.

Also, moving was the salute to Geraldine Ferraro

We’ve also seen the start of the line up of young women actresses.

The Republicans had Clint Eastwood, 82, and the empty chair. The Democrats are going in the opposite direction with a line of “surprise” celebrity speakers, all female, all under 40.

Eva Longoria, 37, is scheduled to take the stage after Caroline Kennedy. Also rumored to appear are actresses Scarlett Johansson, 27; Natalie Portman, 31; and Kerry Washington, 35.

There’s been a moment of FOO and there will be moments of EW&F and Mary J. Blige.

Charlie Crist didn’t do so well. But, there’s a lot of focus on Veterans tonight. They even played the Obama got Osama card in prime time. Senator John Kerry  started the Vet’s salute off. There many Vets in the audience sporting the various garb worn by the band of brothers and sisters.   John Kerry nailed Mitt Romney as a flip flopper.

It’s amazing to see the Democrats showing pictures of a war and saluting Veterans while the Republicans were silent last week.  The world must be upside down.

So, here we go with Joe Biden as Biden staffers pass out “fired up, ready for Joe” signs.    Dr. Biden was introduced by a Angie Flores a student at Miami Dade College in Florida.  There are certainly some wonderful young women standing up on the stage this year.

Meanwhile, Here’s your zen thought of the day:

“People aren’t looking for a handout, they’re just looking for a shot to get back in the game. I think we outta give them that shot” – Biden

Personally, I thought it was courageous of Charlie Crist to get up on stage at a Democratic pep rally. The crowd has been primed to not look on Republicans kindly throughout these 3 days. I think he managed to bring the crowd around by the end of the speech. He was, IMHO, the best Republican governor in my lifetime – and we’ve had quite a few Republican govs in Florida. While he was governor, our Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission was hell bent on downlisting manatees, which would have resulted in dismantling the protections we’ve worked so hard to win against deep pocketed opposition. Crist shut the process down. Crist championed the reclamation of the Everglades. Just my 2 cents.

I enjoyed his speech. The Repubs are such haters. He took hell from them because he gave Obama a hug. When I saw Gabby gifford. It really made me think about the hate they spew. Charlie is better off without them. He could join the Dems and set his sites on Rubio. He’d be a far better choice. I’m a teacher in Michigan. I know he went gainst his party on tenure.

I was weeping when Gabby came on stage. Her life was changed forever by our horrible gun laws – or lack thereof. It is such a shame for her & all the other victims of gun violence. I wish the Dems would stand up to the NRA.

I liked Charlie Crist’s speech a lot. He came across as very sincere and authentic.

      • Beata's avatar Beata says:

I thought Crist was low-key but very effective.

    • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

He’d be better off switching parties, certainly

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

He hasn’t been a Republican for a few years now. He’s an Independent.

      • ecocatwoman's avatar ecocatwoman says:

When Rubio, with the backing of the Tea Party, overtook Crist’s big lead in the Senate race, Crist left the Republican Party & ran as an independent. He and Kendrick Meeks split the Dem & Independent/unaffiliated votes that gave Rubio the Senate seat. The talk is that he’ll switch to Dem & run for governor again.

I hate to say this, but tonight isn’t living up to the first two nights of the convention so far.

    • ecocatwoman's avatar ecocatwoman says:

Agreed. But could anything actually surpass last night? Fluke, Sr. Campbell, Cecile Richards…..oh, and Hillary’s husband wasn’t too bad either.

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

Finally Biden is getting wound up.

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

“I’ve got news for Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan. It’s never a good thing to bet against the American people. We have no intention of downsizing the American dream.”

      • Beata's avatar Beata says:

Biden’s always Biden. He’s an old school Democratic pol, not the slick creation of some PR team. There are traces of the Ted Kennedy style when Biden speaks, but of course he lacks the unique Kennedy charisma. His speech was good and did what it needed to do – set the stage for Obama.

    • Silent Kate's avatar Silent Kate says:

I felt that was so Barach will appear to be wonderful in his speech. They don’t want anyone to out shine his speech. Joe is doing well though and Kerry for beings boring guy did well

  4. ecocatwoman's avatar ecocatwoman says:

I think the focus on the veterans tonight has been a good direction to take the convention. One reason in particular is how eager Romney – and even McCain – are to send our troops into even more countries. I’d rather see this than the banging of more war drums.

BTW – i heard James Taylor was going to perform tonight. Have I missed him? I certainly hope not.

    That was a good one!

He’s actually giving a great vision. I’m impressed because he’s hitting all the right buttons

  10. Beata's avatar Beata says:

Obama’s speech is not setting me on fire so far. Seems very ordinary. Maybe I have convention fatigue.

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

It certainly can’t live up to Bill Clinton’s speech last night.

      • HT's avatar HT says:

What could? I don’t think there’s another person on earth who could present the same gravitas, the same charisma as Bill Clinton. He’s one of a kind, sadly.

  11. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

He’s making an argument against Ayn Randism.

My opinion is he got it done.

  14. Beata's avatar Beata says:

It was a solid, upbeat speech. Not soaring, but probably good enough. I would have preferred him to really go after Romney/Ryan but no doubt he will have his attack dogs do that. Voters usually want an optimistic message from a presidential candidate. That’s what Obama gave them tonight.

Romney campaign will “carpet bomb” the airwaves starting Friday.

Senior Romney-Ryan campaign officials tell Fox News the campaign will launch an enormous media offensive on Friday, the day after President Obama accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination for a second term. The push will include ad buys in several states that will cost tens of millions of dollars.

Aides said more than a dozen new ads, each tailored to different regions and segments of the electorate, will begin airing Friday, aimed at dramatically shifting the dynamics of a contest that Romney-Ryan aides acknowledge, in terms of the hard realities of the electoral map, have until now favored the Obama-Biden ticket.

“Time is short,” said one campaign aide. “We have $100 million we’ve just raised. If you look at our burn rate to date and our cash on hand, there’s not much more we can spend on infrastructure. So we’ve got to start spending our general election funds in a big way, because you know what the value of that money is on the day after the election? Zero.”

    • RalphB's avatar RalphB says:

They’ve got a lot of money to spend on those ads but, no matter how you look at it, they’re still trying to polish a turd.

That will hopefully not be easy and surely ads have to hit the saturation point of diminishing returns soon in those swing states. I would be out of my mind if I had to watch those things.

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

I hate the ads, and I’ll bet I’m not alone. My sister-in-law lives in NH, and they can’t stand them. My tendency would be to get turned off–especially by negative ads like the ones Romney runs. If he has run any positive ones, I haven’t seen them.

Here he goes, got God’s money, and will be pounded his message every second of the day. Oh, I am sure he will a bang on the dollar, and be rewarded in heaven.

    • NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

Bombard the people with too many ads they’ll get sick of them. Could backfire.

  17. HT's avatar HT says:

OMG, they are playing call ins. The Republican callers are so totally ignorant of the issues and policies – they are parroting all of the RNC rhetoric – they have no idea of what critical thinking entails. I used to think that they were far more intelligent than had been portrayed. I thought that they were not totally entranced by Rush. I was wrongh.

  18. RalphB's avatar RalphB says:

Ben Smith has what I think is an accurate portrait of the race as it stands now.

Obama Leaves Charlotte With A Strong Hand

CHARLOTTE, NC — Barack Obama leaves the Democratic National Convention here with a commanding position in the race for president, leaving his Republican foe to hope that a meticulously staged three-day campaign event cannot overshadow a weak American economy.

The Democratic National Convention, energized by party soldiers’ genuine affection for the first black president, accomplished what a cooler, well-staged Republican National Convention in Tampa did not: It broke through. Bill Clinton’s discursive, 50-minute Wednesday speech was watched by more people than the Cowboys-Giants game.

And the president used Clinton’s base to lean into his second term with a workmanlike and programmatic speech, and to offer the contrast and the detail that will be the focus of the fall campaign.
    […]
Obama’s path out of Charlotte is crystal clear. He is now running on a detailed plan for the next four years, a classically political document dominated by modest-sized (dare we say Clintonian?) initiatives carefully targeted at key groups of voters — like manufacturers, autoworkers, and the energy workers — organized in the states he needs to carry this fall. He has found, in Clinton, a defense against Mitt Romney’s charge, that in an alteration of welfare policy he’d broken with Clinton’s own legacy.

Romney’s tactical path is far less obvious.

“At this point Romney would have to change the basic contours of the race to win,” said Jim Jordan, a Democratic political consultant.

More people watched Bill’s speech than the football game!?!

OT, but can you imagine this happening in the US?

The European Parliament has put off a hearing on a nominee for a top European Central Bank job to underline concerns over the lack of women running the eurozone’s top monetary authority. ….

Committee head Sharon Bowles said Friday she had not received an adequate answer from European finance ministers to a letter asking why no women candidates could be found.

There are no women on the executive board that runs the bank day to day, or on the bank’s 23-member governing council that sets interest rates.
