Karma(in front), Honey, and the leash a few months after Katrina in the infamous canal that flooded the ninth ward across from me.
I came home after chasing down some gas to a home with air conditioning, internet and cable. I am once again in the modern era. The cats were doing a happy dance when I walked in the door. They had been tag teaming me with yowling complaints about the room service and temperature for about two days now. Now, I have to deal with the aftermath of 5 days without power. The refrigerator is empty but needs a complete bleach job. I have endless towels and things to wash and no hot water. Need to light the silly pilot light. It’s something I can never seem to do.
I put away the leash for the last time.
Yup. There are a lot of things I will have to do and get use to now.
This is an open thread. What’s on your mind?

I’m so glad you got your power back, Dak. That’s a great photo of Karma and Honey.
Emily took them for a walk the Thanksgiving after Katrina and snapped a bunch of pictures of them at playing the entry from the ICC to the Mississippi River which is about 1/2 block from my house. They were great fun then.
Welcome back! Beautiful companions. So Sorry for your loss.
Thank you. She was such a sweet dog. Never growled or barked. Perfect pub dog!!! I’m going to miss her.
The connection with putting away the leash for the last time was a perfect expression Kat, made me think of the sadness you are feeling now…I am so sorry.
WE have hurricane force winds up here — and when those winds hit off of the Pacific ocean trees go down and our power can be off for a week or more. Generally when we need the heat — so I can very much understand being without power and how great it feels to return to the modern electrical age.
Isn’t it funny how our fur kids are also fans of the electric goddess.
You’ve got two big holes in your heart — what beautiful dogs!!
My sister lost her electricity in Belleview once for like a week. The trees can really do a number on overhead lines, can’t they?
Welcome back!!!
Thank you! I’m missed every one and I’m glad to be back. Just beginning to feel human again.
When my little Chihuahua passed about 4 years ago — my cats were very depressed — they missed their little buddy who was a love — she loved everyone (unlike the stereotype Chihuahua). To them a home without a dog isn’t normal. We added another Chi — this time he loves us but he’s not the outgoing lover that our first Chi was. But the cats were happy — and then the oldest guy passed at 20 years. I had no idea cats could live so long.
These guys leave such big holes — and they train us more than we train them. Each dog and cat I’ve had makes me a better person.
Those of us who have these special guys know what I mean.
There was a 23-year-old cat on “My Cat From Hell” this week. I know of another cat that lived into her 20s, but it’s rare.
I’ve been wondering if the older cat–who I got as a 6 month old kitten when the dogs were still spry–has missed Karma. He was really almost crying two mornings ago and was really needing to be stroked. He kept going up to her a lot the night she died when I was brushing her and trying to get her to drink some water. Animals can be really sensitive to all kinds of things he ways that we are not.
The older cat probably does miss Karma — and remember the cat in the rest home who seems to know which patient was going to die?
