Live Blog: SOTU 2012

Here’s your SOTU Bingo Card!  Print it out and play along.  As soon as one square has been said once, you have to take a drink for every mention after that!  Those are the House Rules!

I decided against plugging in the “THEME” of the night.  Obama is still channeling Teddy Roosevelt with the idea of Economic Fairness.

President Barack Obama will call economic fairness “the defining issue of our time” in his State of the Union address Tuesday night as he vows to keep fighting for working Americans.

“It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody,” Obama will say, according to excerpts released by the White House ahead of his speech in the House chamber to a joint session of Congress. “Let’s never forget: Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a government and a financial system that does the same.”

The election-year address gives Obama a high-profile platform to counter the GOP presidential candidates who have been pummeling him, virtually unanswered, for months. He will expand on the vision he described in a pivotal December speech in Osawatomie, Kan., that channeled Teddy Roosevelt’s square deal slogan of economic equality.

Obama will lay down markers Tuesday night aimed at making that vision a reality.

That’s always been the deal, hasn’t it?  Obama is very good at stealing another leader’s vision and making it seem like he owns it.  The problem is that he negotiates it away to the right wing and his words never come out as detailed plans.  Will this be the billion dollar fund raising speech it needs to be?  The SOTU will be lived simulcast via the White House Home Page.

HuffPost has a list up for those of you that want to play its drinking game.  Here’s some examples of its offerings.

Of course, KXL as of now has no plan for how it’s going to avoid the Ogalalla acquifer.

Is that considered “shovel ready”? Or does that apply to your BS, Boner?

    Osama! Drink!

  11. dakinikat says:

yup, on to financial regulation and the MIDDLE class …

He’s blaming Wall Street so there’s another one down. and he just said jobs.

  12. dakinikat says:

“Think about the America within our reach: A country that leads the world in educating its people. An America that attracts a new generation of high-tech manufacturing and high-paying jobs. A future where we’re in control of our own energy, and our security and prosperity aren’t so tied to unstable parts of the world. An economy built to last, where hard work pays off, and responsibility is rewarded. “

  13. dakinikat says:

He’s talking about the auto industry bail outs now.

    • dakinikat says:

“As long as I’m President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place.

No, we will not go back to an economy weakened by outsourcing, bad debt, and phony financial profits. Tonight, I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last – an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values.”

    • Minkoff Minx says:

  16. dakinikat says:

He’s talking corporate Tax Loopholes now.

    • dakinikat says:

First, if you’re a business that wants to outsource jobs, you shouldn’t get a tax deduction for doing it.

    • dakinikat says:

“It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs right here in America.”

He’s starting a Trade Enforcement Union to police unfair trade practices.

  17. bostonboomer says:

That was kind of a JFK paraphrase.

“Ask what you can do to bring jobs to your country, and your country will do everything it can to help you.”

Doesn’t have the same ring to it tho.

  18. Sophie says:

He says all these wonderful things as if he was going to press for legislation on any of them.

Rocky to Bullwinkle: Not that trick again.

    • dakinikat says:

I’m glad he’s mentioning higher education but I have no idea what he can do about it if your governor is set on running a plantation and keeping folks in trade schools instead.

  25. dakinikat says:

whoa … he mentioned equal pay for equal work

  26. dakinikat says:

Obama: We should be working on comprehensive immigration. If not, “let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people.

  33. bostonboomer says:

Is it just me, or does Obama sound a lot more fired up than usual?

  34. peggysue22 says:

In fact, our largest export right now is . . . fuel. More gasoline, diesel and jet fuel than any other export. So when the Keystone Pipeline comes up? That was already contracted for South America and Europe. Ugh.

He’s getting all the buzzwords in. Yes, end the oil companies’ subsidies. Only you have to act on the words. New program with the Dept of the Defense to develop green energy to 3 million homes? Not sure if I got the number right.

Executive order for infrastructure jobs. GOP will hate that!

  35. ralphb says:

  41. dakinikat says:

Obama: Do we want to keep these tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans? Or do we want to keep our investments in everything else?

Now, we’ve got tax reform and the Buffett Rule … I think that takes care of about three of our bingo items

    • dakinikat says:

“a quarter of all millionaires pay lower taxes than most American households”

‘asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary”

  42. dakinikat says:

    Gratuitous Romney Slap:

“Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes.”

  56. NW Luna says:

Was listening to Hard Knock Radio on the way home tonight … Several African-Americans interviewed about SOTU. None of them were very happy with POTUS. One of them called Obama “the greatest trick ever.” Wanted to hear about immigration reform, solutions to the student-debt problem, undoing Citizens United, but not hopeful. Wide-spread pessimism — err, realism.

  57. yay barack thanks for wrapping up.

  58. dakinikat says:

Teddy Roosevelt’s words, from his own Kansas speech:

“I stand for the square deal. But when I say that I am for the square deal, I mean not merely that I stand for fair play under the present rules of the games, but that I stand for having those rules changed so as to work for a more substantial equality of opportunity and of reward for equally good service.”

“The object of government is the welfare of the people.”

Interesting. The Mortgage Crisis Unit he announced may be worth something after all. Schneiderman is the real thing.

WASHINGTON — During his State of the Union address tonight, President Obama will announce the creation of a special unit to investigate misconduct and illegalities that contributed to both the financial collapse and the mortgage crisis.

The office, part of a new Unit on Mortgage Origination and Securitization Abuses, will be chaired by Eric Schneiderman, the New York attorney general, according to a White House official.

Schneiderman is an increasingly beloved figure among progressives for his criticism of a proposed settlement between the 50 state attorneys generals and the five largest banks. His presence atop this new special unit could give it immediate legitimacy among those who have criticized the president for being too hesitant in going after the banks and resolving the mortgage crisis. He will be in attendance at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
