Eric Cantor Denies Reality During “60 Minutes” Interview

Via Steve Benen, Rep. Eric Cantor was interviewed on 60 Minutes last night. Lesley Stahl asked Cantor why he refuses to compromise when his “idol,” Ronald Reagan didn’t have a problem doing so. Here’s the relevant portion:

Stahl: But you know, your idol, as I’ve read anyway, was Ronald Reagan. And he compromised.

Cantor: He never compromised his principles.

Stahl: Well, he raised taxes and it was one of his principles not to raise taxes.

Cantor: Well, he — he also cut taxes.

Stahl: But he did compromise —

Cantor: Well I —

At that point, Cantor’s press secretary, off camera, interrupted the interview, yelling that Stahl was lying when she said Reagan raised taxes. As Stahl told “60 Minutes” viewers, “There seemed to be some difficulty accepting the fact that even though Ronald Reagan cut taxes, he also pushed through several tax increases, including one in 1982 during a recession.”

What is it with these Republicans and their inability to accept reality?

  1. Cantor, a living zombie who idolizes the conservative zombie myth of Ronald Reagan.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the GOP has lied so much and for so long the they’ve accepted their spin as truth. Certainly, they want their constituency to accept the spin as truth: the rewritten histories, the outrageous claims, the refusal to accept accountability–for anything.

Cantor is a weasel who couldn’t bring himself to support a bill banning insider trading. We need to study it more, he claimed. Really???

Sorry I missed the televised interview. Or maybe, not :0).

Thanks for the heads up, BB.

Reality is something that both parties don’t have a firm grasp of…

  5. Last OT for now (sorry BB!):

Probably old news to others here, but I’m catching up on the political blogosphere just in time for the dreadful Iowa/NH Battle of Unarmed Wits.

Anyhow, just saw that Lambert’s crossposting at Naked Capitalism these days:

Here’s another OT but it’s kind of a good one. The Ethanol subsidy expired Saturday. Best thing from the government all year. Now if only they don’t resuscitate it.
