Tuesday Reads: Goolsbee Gone, Hotel Workers Heckle Strauss-Kahn, Cancer Drugs, and a Confession

Good Morning!!

White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee will soon resign to return to teaching at Milton Friedman Institute the University of Chicago.

“Since I first ran for the U.S. Senate, Austan has been a close friend and one of my most trusted advisers,” President Obama said….”Over the past several years, he has helped steer our country out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and although there is still much work ahead, his insights and counsel have helped lead us toward an economy that is growing and creating millions of jobs. — He is one of America’s great economic thinkers.”

Maybe … if you favor NAFTA and cutting Social Security. And where are those “millions of jobs” Obama is talking about–China?

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who has been accused of sexual assault on a hotel maid was jeered by NYC hotel workers yesterday outside a Manhattan courthouse.

Lawyers for the maid who has accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of criminal sexual assault in a New York hotel room served notice yesterday that she will testify at his trial and “tell the world” what he inflicted upon her, as the former IMF chief was met with a chorus of heckling from hotel workers outside a Manhattan courthouse.

The warning, delivered minutes after Mr Strauss-Kahn entered a ‘not guilty’ plea to the seven charges filed against him, is the latest indication of how ferocious the trial is likely to be with the defence, the prosecution and now lawyers for the accuser all aggressively preparing to engage in battle.

[….]

Theatrics outside the court yesterday were further stoked by hotel maids pushing against police barriers jeering Mr Strauss-Kahn as he, accompanied by his defence team and his wife, Anne Sinclair, arrived for his formal arraignment. The hotel employees, bussed in by their union and most dressed in uniforms they usually wear to work, cried “shame” as he walked past. Wendy Baranello, a hotel union organiser, called the charges “outrageous” and said the accuser “is a hard-working woman… just doing her job.”

As Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) left the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference this past weekend, he was approached by a young Catholic man who asked Ryan:

“Why did you choose to model your budget off the extreme ideology of Ayn Rand rather than values of basic economic justice in the Bible?” James Salt of Faithful America asked Ryan, the author of the Republican budget, before offering him a Bible to read.

Ryan ignored Salt’s questions and briskly walked away.

Faithful America has launched a campaign to encourage Ryan to put down the conservative writer Ayn Rand, who advocated selfishness, and pick up the Bible. The group said his budget plan “reflects Ayn Rand’s love of greed and contempt for the weak by giving huge tax breaks to millionaires while making deep and harmful cuts to programs that protect seniors, struggling families and the middle class.”

Finally the U.S. Supreme Court has done something we can cheer. From Raw Story:

The US Supreme Court gave the green light Monday to a group seeking to bring a class-action lawsuit against US oil services firm Halliburton for alleged fraud.

The nine judges unanimously decided that the plaintiffs, a group of investors, do not need to prove a direct relationship between Halliburton’s alleged fraudulent statements and the investors’ financial losses in order to pursue the lawsuit.

Halliburton is accused of making a series of false statements about its business dealings that artificially inflated its stock price.

Afterward, Halliburton disclosed corrections that then caused stock prices to drop at the loss of investors.

The suit is on behalf of all investors who purchased Halliburton stock between June 3, 1999 and December 7, 2001.

During that time Dick Cheney was Halliburton’s CEO.

There is some “big news in the fight against cancer.”

Two new studies report dramatic progress in treating advanced melanoma and lung cancer.

Both of these treatments use an approach that is creating a lot of excitement among doctors –tailoring drugs to the genetic makeup of individual patients, and the results can be remarkable

A few years ago, Bill Schuette was preparing for the end.

But then he heard about something new: an experimental drug that targets a certain type of lung cancer based on its genetic makeup. Tests showed he was a candidate.

His rare form of non-small-cell lung cancer has a genetic mutation called ALK that fuels cancer growth. The new drug, Crizotinib, works by blocking this abnormal gene, causing tumors to shrink.

Skin cancer treatment: Biggest breakthrough in 30 years – The New Scientist

Two new drugs for metastatic melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – are being hailed as the biggest breakthrough therapies for cancer in the last 30 years. The drugs reduce tumour size, significantly increasing survival rates.

Although melanoma can be cured if caught early enough, individuals in the late stages of the disease are only expected to survive for an average of six months. One of the two drugs – vemurafenib – works by inhibiting the effects of a mutated form of the BRAF gene, which is thought to accompany around half of the cases of malignant skin tumours.

[….]

In a study presented this week at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago, and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Chapman’s team compared both drugs on 672 patients with late stage, inoperable melanoma and a mutation in the BRAF gene.

The group found that 48 per cent of those receiving vemurafenib responded to the treatment, while only 5 per cent of patients responded to dacarbazine. At 6 months, survival was 84 per cent in the group taking vemurafenib compared to 64 per cent in those taking dacarbazine.

A new drug for breast cancer: Aromasin a major breakthrough in fight against breast cancer, cutting risk by 65 percent

Doctor Harvey Greenberg is the director of University Community Hospital’s Cancer Program. He said, “There’s been some suggestion that women are reluctant to take Tamoxifen due to the potential side effects,” which reportedly include developing blood clots, or developing uterine cancer.

A study was conducted to see if a different class of medicines could be used for the prevention of breast cancer. Study results just released show the estrogen blocker Aromasin reduced the chance of developing breast cancer by 65 percent in post menopausal women at high risk.

The study, which was sponsored by Pfizer — the company that makes this drug — broke the participants into two groups: one that got the drug and one that got the placebo. There were 11 invasive breast cancers reported in the group that got the drug compared to 32 cases in the group that got the placebo.

Doctor Greenberg says, “The most important take away is that there is now another class of medicines that can be helpful in preventing breast cancer in high-risk women. The second take away is if there are women who have been identified as possibly benefiting from Tamoxifen but they won’t take it, here’s a substitute.”

For those of you who have read this far, I’m going to make a confession. I’ve been horribly depressed by the political news lately, and for the past couple of weeks I’ve been watching the trial of Casey Anthony, a young woman accused of murdering her 2-1/2 year-old daughter.

I know, I know … tabloid stuff. But I’m telling you, it’s more interesting than watching Law & Order, CSI, and Criminal Minds all rolled into one. Yesterday, there was testimony from an researcher on human decomposition from the “Body Farm” at Oak Ridge National laboratory.

Dr. Arpad Vass testified that he detected human decomposition in the air from the trunk of Casey’s car. It’s the first time a jury has heard testimony about the controversial air tests. The evidence has never been used in a criminal case before.

Prosecutors say the tests prove Caylee’s [Casey’s daughter] body was in the trunk of Casey’s car.

“I can find no other plausible explanation other than that to explain all the results we found,” said Vass.

Vass testified that a machine called a “gas chromatograph” can identify chemicals that are unique to human decomposition.

“Those are the chemicals that a cadaver-locating dog could smell,” Vass said.

Yesterday there was testimony from an FBI forensic expert about a hair found in the truck of Anthony’s car that showed signs of human decomposition.

In addition to the opportunity to learn about the latest methods in forensic science, the trial offers a chance to observe Casey Anthony’s amazing lack of affect as she listens to testimony about her allegedly killing her child. She has to be one of the most evil human beings I’ve ever encountered. If you’re interested in this kind of thing, you can watch the trial streamed live on-line at a number of sites. Here’s one. Frankly, I find it much less depressing than observing American political culture.

So … what are you reading and blogging about today?

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Casey Anthony. This is evil personified.

The thing is that many people do not recognize plain evil but prefer a label be attached since it makes it easier to accept or deny actions that separate us from those who “go over the line” of normal behavior.

It is fascinating to watch her total lack of response when they discuss what may have happened to her child. My feeling is that even had this not happened to Caylee that sometime in the future Casey Anthony would have committed murder against another person who would have stood in her way.

Great round-up BB, I have been watching the trial lately myself…did not know it was on live until recently. You are right about Casey’s reactions, it is fascinating to see this. Reminds me of Jeffrey MacDonald. I think criminal psychology is really interesting.

Re: “Evil” human beings. I was listening to an interesting discussion of what is being learned about the role of our brain’s physical condition in how we “act” or don’t act.

One of the examples was of an exemplary man who suddenly became a pedophile. He was caught and found guilty, but he also got medical attention. It turned out he had a very fast growing, nonmalignant tumor in his brain. He was operated on and suddenly he had absolutely no desire for young children and became the “moral” and upstanding man he had been previously.

He was released from jail, returned to his life, but began to feel the same insatiable desires again. He asked his doctors what could be happening, they found remnants of the tumor had begun growing rapidly again, causing his brain to change the man’s “self.”

He was operated on again, it seems all the remnants were removed this time, and he again is his exemplary, normal, moral “self.”

The point being made is that we are so very much what that gelatinous gray mass in our skulls makes us be. We believe in free will, but neuro scientists are seeing more and more than our physical brain molds “us.”

The scientist on the program was positing that as we learn more, it will change our justice system. The brain will be examined for defects, chemical imbalances, etc., and people will not be stored in jails but cured to return to normal life.

This will not happen immediately, as it requires greater knowledge of how our brains work. But, in the future, the discussion will not be about good and evil people, but about well and sick or unbalanced people’s brains.

Of course, this may lead to governments controlling people more effectively by actually managing their brains….

Now,where did I hear that program…either NPR or WBAI or BBC….

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

That’s fascinating. The “self” is much less consistent than we realize.

Not defending his actions, but some of these women were playing right along with him in those messages but here they come, right out of the Tiger Woods and Eliot Spitzer playbook, looking to make a dime on their own infamy.

What a world we live in when shame is the last thing on the minds of these people.

    Asshats.

Great roundup BB. I love arguing with Christian conservatives using the bible as my reference source. Most of their economic and social doctrines come from the old testament. That is bass ackwards sice Jesus contradicted most of the teachings of the old testament in the new testament. Let’s see if the democrats are smart enough to use that as a fundraising tool. Doubt it though.

If Caylee’s body was decomposing in the trunk of Casey’s car, it seems they would be able to find the little girl’s DNA in the trunk also, no? Any DNA evidence?
On the other hand, maybe the gas chromatography is better evidence. Caylee’s DNA could be in the trunk merely if a blanket of hers was ever stored there.
    Just thinking out loud.

Cindy Anthony also washed all the clothes and the doll. All that evidence going down the drain, literally.

What bothers me about her defense, is that when the news first came out about Caylee missing…and pretty much until they found her body, there was lots of speculation on lots of website comments.

I used to read and post some comments on the ID site. (I think it is connected to discovery channel.)
There was so many theories about the little girls death and the life that this family lead. And every one of those theories is being used as Casey Anthony’s defense. Down to the accidental drowning, and George Anthony’s involvement…the sex abuse from both the father and the brother. Everything that the defense is using. Just seems like they just perused various commentary on those websites and plucked the defense from that.

I was interested in the cancer advances you mentioned, BB. These therapies sound very similar to the studies described in ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’–zeroing in on the specific mutation and developing drugs to block or reverse the damaging replication.

The med/scientific community is working on a cancer genome to identify the many, many genetic mutations involved. I was somewhat startled to realize that breast cancer, for instance, is not one disease but many diseases, all subtypes with specific signatures.

They have a long road to go but the results are really encouraging. My maternal grandfather died of lung cancer. Beyond yanking the diseased lung out and pumping him up with chemo drugs, there wasn’t much to offer. He really suffered and didn’t last long.

So, at least there’s a little ‘good’ news. Gotta grab it where you can find it!

Top 10 Reasons Why I’m Standing by My Man, Rep Weiner.

Rep. Weiner doesn’t have a “sex scandal” on his hands.

He didn’t pay for sex (Eliot Spitzer, David Vitter, …)
He didn’t troll on Craigslist for sex partners (Christopher Lee)
He didn’t go skinny dipping with a 15 year old and try to pay her off
He didn’t make a sex tape with a mistress (he doesn’t have a mistress) (John Edwards)
He didn’t solicit oral sex from a man in an airport bathroom (Larry Craig)
He didn’t send sexually laced e-mails to teenage boys, Congressional pages no less! (Mark Foley)
He isn’t a closeted gay man in his secret life while pushing anti-gay policy in his political life (a la Ken Mehlman and SO many others)
He didn’t smoke meth with male prostitutes (Evangelical leader Ted Haggard)
He didn’t have around relations with an intern (Bill Clinton), former aide (John Ensign), lobbyist (Mike Duvall), or
From what he reported during his bare-all (pun intended) press conference, he didn’t have sexual relations with anyone other than his wife

He was a married man who flirted with women on Twitter. Consenting adults exchanging pictures–something that people who have Twitter, Facebook, cell phones, chat programs often do.

There’s not much of a defense for this sort of acting out. Yes, other people have done worse but that’s not a pass. The expected behavior bar is set higher for a US Congressman.

However, I burn with the gloat factor by Repug haters and their self-righteous attitude. Unlike Dems, the Republicans preach endlessly about family values and get their panties twisted in a Puritan bunch, when a member of the opposition falls from grace. In fact, their reaction is frequently undisguised glee. When their own members disgrace themselves? Not so much or it’s circle the wagon time.

Human nature is what it is. I suspect there are few ‘pure hands’ in DC. Or anywhere else.

Btw, confusing Breitbart with journalism [even though the standard has been drastically lowered] is a sick joke. Breitbart claims he now feels vindicted after the 3-day frenzy to compromise ‘his journalism.’

        Oh, Please!

So, the reasons for rally around the flag don’t fly for me. That being said, I’d like to see Weiner come back and have a chance to rehabilitate his reputation.

      • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

What she feels about this is between him and her. Frankly, I’m old enough and experienced enough to know that men flirt all the time. I’m secure enough for it not to bother me. Marriage is just a social construct anyway. Men in their 40s are flattered by attention from women 1/2 their age. I see it at universities with professors and students all the time. Who am I to define some one else’s relationship for them? Hillary Clinton and Silda Spitzer didn’t leave their husbands over far worse … I think the kindest thing to do to Huma is not to project upon her the lack of capacity to love and be merciful. Is this something that elected officials do regularly on social media though?

Twitter is archived into the library of congress…imagine it littered with congresspeople’s inappropriate photos. That’d be quite the history lesson.

      • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

I guess I don’t expect elected officials to be any less problematic than any other human being. I think they have the opportunity to be more so actually. What they choose to do with those opportunities and if it’s my business depends on whose time and resources it takes. I guess I don’t think sexting or sending nude photos is all that immoral. I haven’t done it personally because I hate photos of myself under nearly all circumstances but I certainly don’t care if other people do it. Frankly, the lying about it bothers me more. You get a lonely middle aged man, a few beers, and a few young women and I betcha impulse control becomes an issue sooner or later. “Consenting adults” is the key word to me for sexual misconduct.

      • I wasn’t passing judgment on the morality of sexting at all. Just don’t think there are hoards of congresspeople doing it publicly on twitter and facebook or we’d know about it by now.

This is why the whole thing is so maddening, at least to me.

I think it was very stupid of Weiner to do this, but obviously there had to be some sort of compulsion on his part. I don’t give a shit what the man does with his personal life, but sending nude pictures to underage people is wrong and illegal. (Not saying he did this, but he admitted at the press conference he was not 100% positive of the ages of the women he communicated with on Twitter and FB.) Lying about it, is wrong, not illegal…but wrong. (At least I don’t think it was illegal. He did not file any criminal charges…right? So no false statements or lying to police.)

I don’t think he should resign. Look at the crooks still in office for doing a hell of a lot worse than this.

As far as Pelosi and the rest of the Dems, I think they wanted him gone, and unfortunately he gave them an opportunity to kick his ass out of office. Hence, the hearing BS from Pelosi right after he had his press conference.

I think you have to be careful about what you do when you’re a public figure because you know the Republicans push a Puritan agenda. A lot of men like women much younger than them because they are more controllable, exploitable and brainwashable than older women who’ve been around the block a few times. The power differential and ability to affect grades makes such relations extremely abusive between professors and students. I don’t care how much “fluffing” older men “need”, Weiner’s behavior is still majorly creepy. As to the functioning of his dick – he’s got a pair of hands, doesn’t he?

“I just thought at the time…there’s way more girls out there, this is not just me,” Anthony Weiner Facebook sextee Meagan Broussard told Sean Hannity.

And consequently, lots more women for the media to pay for their stories! If Anthony Weiner thought his self-flagellating press conference was going to end his humiliation, he doesn’t get the Internet, the media —or the gossip-friendly digital trail he’s left behind. As Nancy Pelosi announced an ethics investigation into the use of government resources for his long-distance dalliances, the likes of TMZ and RadarOnline went to work, as did ABC and Fox News.

Here’s a rundown of all of the women entangled in this, voluntarily or otherwise. Even for those who can recite the litany of why this doesn’t matter, here are five issues that matter more, people flirt, etc. etc. — okay, we know you’re above this garbage. But just FYI! • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

Six and most of them have come forward. I have a 21 year old daughter and she considers any one over the age of 30 to be ‘creepy’. I was once a 20 something and had lots of attention from older men. I remember being 19 and going out with a 40 year old because he had a hot red sports car and loved to buy me jewelry. I liked older men because they were thrilled to be seen with you, never expected sex or grabbed you inappropriately and lavished you with meals, gifts, and things you couldn’t expect from boys. I remember as having a lot of control over these guys in that situation and found them pretty pathetic. Frankly, most of the young women I know of that age, and I know plenty, have better heads on their shoulders than middle aged men do …

      • Branjor's avatar Thursday's Child says:

I had some attention from older men, but not a lot, because I projected a lack of interest in them – except for my high school Honors English teacher, who I had a crush on. He brought me home with him one day after school, ostensibly to sit there until I thought of a subject for my term paper. So I sat there, thought, never went near him and he never went near me, then he released me to go home. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had approached him. Nothing, I hope.
Anyway, you must not be paying a lot of attention to the more immature and vulnerable young women out there, Kat. I can’t be the only one there ever was. I really think the reason I wasn’t hurt badly by some man is because I mostly stayed away from them.

Dkat – I would’ve been embarrassed to be seen with your 40 yr. old, because it would have been obvious to everyone that I was just a little girl being used as a trophy girl friend by him. I wasn’t interested in red sports cars or jewelry. I would’ve just felt like I was being fattened for the kill. I wouldn’t have felt control in that situation.

Weiner himself must of felt something was wrong with what he was doing ( I mean isn’t that the supposed fun part? ) as he let alot of people go on defending him for days and who today woke up with a Denny’s breakfast special all over their faces …and he thew his wife under the bus at the presser. If he fessed up when caught…I’d have more respect for him and the consenting adults angel would be the point. But because of his actions, during and after, it’s not the point.imo

I think he was more afraid of the political fall out than feeling it was wrong. JMHO. I think it would have been less of an issue if he’d have just said that he did it and it showed bad judgement on his part. I don’t think there was anything wrong with what he did frankly. He handled it very badly because he figured he’d never be found out which is the stupid part.

      • mjames's avatar mjames says:

From where I stand, there are two issues here and they both involve character or, more accurately, lack thereof.

First, we have Breitbart, a hack with no journalistic integrity. None. Sniffing around in other men’s dirty laundry. Jesus Christ. Taking info from some unknown loser who is fixated on Weiner’s sex organ. You know Breitbart never got laid in high school – or maybe ever. I’d be willing to check out his shlong just to see how tiny it is and to laugh in his face. Or maybe he has a thing for Wiener’s hard on. Maybe he’s been dreaming of it in his mouth. Or elsewhere. And then pretending, as all Republican hypocrites do, that he lives a sexually pure life. My ass.

Then, more importantly, we have Weiner. I don’t care that BTD, among myriads of men, claims that a male politician’s sexuality has no relevance to his job. Total BS and total rationalization. Weiner has no character. None. No character in sex means no character anyplace. Period. Beside being incredibly stupid (and, yes, another ugly dude who never got laid in high school) and horrifically disrespectful to his wife, he is an effing coward. Sure, he can show an erection when he is all alone taking beautiful shots of his wee wee, but otherwise the guy is a limp dick – not a pussy, pussies are strong – a limp dick. Lying his skinny ass off – to his friends and allies no less. Then crying like a baby. Begging forgiveness. Apologizing to that slime Breitbart. Acceding to sexual blackmail.

Show us your wee wee, Anthony. We’re going to see it anyway. Just drop your pants and show us and end this torture. What a coward.

Breitbart and Weiner are soul mates in my book.

Now I’m off to earn a living and hopefully put these two losers out of my mind for good.

Exactly. Thanks to his cowradness, those who defended him gotta eat some crow…he’s good at speading the pain around.

I don’t let men disrespect me no matter what their actions. A man’s actions are not a reflection on the amount of respect I deserve and earn. Nothing my now ex husband did or ever could do reflects on me because they are NOT my actions and I am not and have never been the appendage of any man.

This is what Hillary thinks about Huma:

“Abedin has been featured in Vogue—a spotlight not generally afforded a political staffer—and has been the subject of numerous profiles. She was listed in Time’s “40 under 40” young stars in politics.

“Abedin has the energy of a woman in her 20s, the confidence of a woman in her 30s, the experience of a woman in her 40s, and the grace of a woman in her 50s,” Clinton told Vogue in 2007. “She is timeless, her combination of poise, kindness, and intelligence are matchless.”

A: not engage in this stupidity

    B: fess up right away

The things you get grateful for ! lol!

Breitbart being involved was such a gift to Weiner. Nobody takes him seriously outside of fox, and even most people who didn’t buy Weiner’s story weren’t going to say anything because we’d be accused of validating Breitbart or something. Nobody wants to be associated with that guy. All Weiner had to do was well, first, remember how easy it is to push the wrong button and send a message to the wrong place, but then keep his mouth shut, not push his luck, reuse to engage, and not indulge in any public behavior to further fuel the story and chances are it would have petered out pretty quickly. It sort of reminds me of Gary Hart, why tell people to follow you around when, if they do, you’re busted? What’s wrong with you? Don’t poke a snake with a sharp stick–no puns intended.

Even prior to this episode, Breitbart was getting way more attention, and much of it positive, than he deserved. Now I figure he’s going to be the MCM’s replacement for Matt Drudge. And, alas, either he produces the photo of Weiner which he says is a career ender — or Weiner will be blackmailed by Breitbart until the photo does come out.

To remain effective in Congress, Weiner may have to out any photos which are really lewd.

Breitbart is also saying there were women under age the age of 18, so there’s that fear as well.

Did anyone catch NPR’s coverage of Breitbart this evening? Yuck.

This stuff is exactly what I was talking about yesterday…Breibart getting “credibility” from all this…of course not from any of us around here.

      • Seriously's avatar Seriously says:

I don’t believe that Breitbart has this explosive photo, personally. If he did, it would be out there. I may have it in my pocket along with a long list of communists. 🙂 One of the women did say that Weiner was on the verge of sending a naked photo but chickened out, so he may not be THAT reckless.
