We Need to Mess with Texas …

This is really shameful and it’s come from some one who can influence as well as distress children.
Post-bin Laden Racism: Teacher Tells 9th Grade Muslim Girl, ‘I Bet You’re Grieving’
While new news on Osama bin Laden’s killing seems to emerge hourly, one aspect of the aftermath has been reported sparingly: the related vitriolic racism that not only gets directed towards Muslims, but to Middle Easterners, South Asians, and various other racial, ethnic and religious groups that are ignorantly perceived to be ‘other.’ And while there are certainly other accounts of racism flaming up since bin Laden’s killing on Sunday, this story is probably the most egregious, disgusting and hateful we’ve heard thus far:
A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class “I bet that you’re grieving” on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.
According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, “I heard about your uncle’s death.”
The parent said the student “understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her.”
When the girl began crying, the teacher asked why. When another student told the teacher it was because of what he said, he apparently ‘smirked and giggled’ before walking away.
The teacher was immediately placed on Administrative leave until the outcome of an investigation, and the Clear Creek School District released a statement touting tolerance
It’s difficult to even know what to say to this other than Mean People SUCK!!!

What does Texas have to do with this?
yea what dose texas have to do with it
oh sheesh … are you really that literal?
You said it’s time to mess with Texas, implying that Texas, or “Texasness” is connected to this incident in some way other than an accident of geography. 😉
Just for the record, the Houston suburbs are only Texas geographically. Dallas too.
I beg your pardon? Having spent half my childhood in Pasadena, I think I can opine that the Houston suburbs certainly are Texas as can be.
But getting back to the topic at hand — WTH is WRONG with people? Bullying is distressing enough on the playground and in the cafeteria. It’s sad, sad, sad when the teachers join in.
Houston is a nightmarish craphole filled with big box stores, soccer moms who would just as soon run you down as yield, miles of gated “communities,” etc.
It is WORLDS away from Odessa, Paris, and places like that.
I live here in Houston, and that sentiment is everywhere. I was at the bank this morning standing behind an obviously muslim man (his clothing gave him away), and this man standing behind me who I’d never met asked real loud, “..Do you think we should have hung Bin Laden’s body in Times Square?..”
Now he was obviously trying to dig at the gentleman in front of me. But that was a very classless thing to say and a very classless manner of saying it. I actually applaud the president for giving the go ahead on getting OBL, but is there any need to characterize EVERY muslim as a friend or brother of al Quaeda? Then to hear in this story that a 9th grader, a 9th grader, was the target of a teacher?? Has this bias always been there?
Asshat.

I think that the anti-muslim sentiment is something that has become deeply rooted in our society. And it is going to take time and education to make these people realize this is a racist attitude, and needs to stop.
As far as the teacher’s remarks, that is a sad statement of the ignorance many adults in the US enjoy. I say enjoy because it is obvious that becoming knowledgeable in your surroundings, be it political or cultural…etc., requires a bit of work. And it is clear there is a large portion of our society that refuses to do that bit of work.
hope they fire his patootie 🙂
Honk!!

This is disgusting. That teacher should be fired immediately–not just for the biased remark, but for singling out and bullying a student.
Yes, the bullying part is especially bad. He used his position of power to accuse a 14-year-old girl of being a terrorist, or at least, a terrorist sympathizer. It’s one thing when a student does that (bad enough), but it’s a whole other level of awful when a teacher does it.
Exactly. What kind of person goes into teaching for the pleasure of bullying little kids? There are so many horrible bullies and disciplinary problems who never get disciplined, while the teacher is busy roaming the halls looking for kids who aren’t doing anything wrong to persecute? Awesome.
Can you imagine what his kids must be taught at home if he has children? Hope his name gets out so he has to find another career and doesn’t teach any more.
I don’t care what people say about how Gen Obama and younger kids coming along will heal our nation because they’re free from racism and homophobia and so filled with beautiful noble ideals blagh blagh blagh. Baloney. There’s a racist, homophobic, sexist, just plain ugly subculture in schools, and it’s not coming from a vacuum. Sure, kids can overcome their parents’ prejudices, but a racist or homophobic or Islamophobe culture doesn’t just magically right itself generationally without putting the work in. Denial doesn’t get it done. And with kids being reenforced by their peers, families, authority figures, and the culture in general, not a lot of incentive to change.
Don’t forget they all tend to flock to churches and neighborhoods where they can perpetuate it with like minds. When two big box holy rolling churches moved to my burb it went straight to hell. It drew the crazies like moths to flame.
Seriously,
This generation is probably going to be WORSE.

You’re late to the party. Texas is already a mess, thanks to GWB, Rick Perry and the Republican idiots in the Lege and on the State Board of Education.
Here is the Houston TV report on this.
The man is not fit to be a teacher.
