I’m watching MSNBC Brian Williams is describing what’s going on in the square. He’s showing picture of people riding in from rural areas on camels and horses with big scimitars waving to join the protesters in the fight.

Also this wikileaks cable was just released re the torture by the Police via our Cairo embassy

    http://wikileaks.ch/cable/2009/05/09CAIRO814.html

–Torture: Broadening the definition of torture and increasing the penalties. (Comment: Currently, the law defines torture only in the context of extracting confessions. Most sentences for police offices have been the minimum prescribed by law. End comment.)

I mean, really what could some 40 photos of grannies, mothers, youth wimminz and little girls do to US policy. They are Freedom/Pro-Democracy protesters, some ultra religious, some moderate, some modern liberal and they all are willing to speak up and be heard, because they can’t tolerate the continuation of generational oppression under dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Ben Smith: Hilary’s 3 am moment

Confronted with the most acute foreign policy crisis of his administration, President Barack Obama is increasingly relying on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her advice and connections — including a 20-year friendship with the family of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that has drawn fire from human rights advocates.

It was Clinton who came up with the idea of sending Frank Wisner, U.S. ambassador to Egypt in the 1980’s, to Cairo to deliver Obama’s pointed request that Mubarak not seek a new term as the country’s leader, an administration official told POLITICO.

And it was Clinton who Obama dispatched to appear on five Sunday morning shows to send a not-so-subtle message to the tottering dictator that the time had come for a “peaceful transition to real democracy,” not Mubarak’s “faux democracy.”

As a Democratic presidential candidate in 2008, Clinton aired the famous “3 a.m.” commercial, with its image of a White House phone ringing with news of an international crisis, to question Obama’s foreign policy experience. But in the past week, Clinton has been at the center of Obama’s frantic attempt to keep pace with spiraling events — including a critical meeting in the Oval Office last Saturday when Obama deputized Clinton to clarify the administration’s confused response to the crisis.

Can I hear a rousing round of WE TOLD YOU SO!!!

</stroWikiLeaks among nominees for Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO – Anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian politician behind the proposal said on Wednesday, a day after the deadline for nominations expired.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepts nominations for what many consider as the world’s top accolade until February 1, although the five panel members have until the end of the month to make their own proposals.

Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen said WikiLeaks was “one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency” in the 21st century.

“By disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, WikiLeaks is a natural contender for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Valen said.

Rachel didn’t mention that Steve Clemons is advising Obama administration, as reported by the Guardian today. He’s excellent but she should.

That explains the F/U and the State Department asking all Americans to leave, because there is going to be a blood shed and the White House thought they had more clout in dealing with a dictator and are now learning what the Freedom/Democracy protesters already know all to well…dictators NEVER KEEP THEIR PROMISES!

@monaeltahawy @wedaddy @JShahryar @ioerror Isn’t it lovely that White House is hanging up on people who call about #Egyptians being killed?

This is very concerning because I honestly was hoping that Freedom and Democracy by the Generation X & Y was what was going to usher peace in the region, but the White House is going the Huckabee way and with the fears of Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly. They don’t get the connection, between poverty and ultra conservativeness with a promise of something better somewhere else, blah, blah, blah…

I trust the youth that is fighting for their Freedom/Democracy and Universal Human Rights. We have seen the thugs, going after the protesters and now have journalists hiding for safety and VP Biden still insists that Hosni Mubarak isn’t a dictator.

  7. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

President Obama is “very concerned” about Mubarak’s refusal to transfer power.

Mubarak was described as being alternately sanguine and defiant in his conversation with President Obama last night, though it was described by one official as being very different from their conversation Friday night when Mubarak blamed the protests on the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and assured President Obama the situation was under control.

Needless to say, it wasn’t then, and it isn’t now.

The Obama administration is also very concerned that no matter what interim government in Egypt comes next, the situation for the US could get worse not better. Administration officials are worried about continued Egyptian cooperation on matters such as counterterrorism, upholding the Camp David accords, access to the Suez canal, combating the smuggling of weapons into Gaza, and standing against Iran. Officials say it’s difficult to see how whatever comes in the interim for the Egyptian government will end up being better for the US on those issues.

Other worries include the spread of the contagion of chaos into countries such as Jordan. Some in the administration are weighing how will recent US actions will be perceived by US allies in terms of the lack of support for Mubarak.

Is it possible to embed Al Jazeera Live Stream here like they are doing in the live blogs?

Listen while blogging is the max time information for me, for as long as it lasts, if indeed Hosni Dictator Mubarak is planning a lock down via the army as is rumored.

    • I tried to vodpod it here–didn’t work. Bigger sites must have media permissions to embed.

Ok I got it to work finally but the AJE feed crashes my browser for some reason (that’s why I use the AJE on youtube stream instead.) Anyhow it was difficult, but I think I got it for you guys. I’ll embed it into the post. Just give me a moment.

      • WomanVoter's avatar WomanVoter says:

        Wonk,

        Thanks for trying. 🙂

      • Woman Voter, look up, the Al Jazeera feed is there!

      • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

that’s kewl … i’ll add that media update within the week …

      • Sweet! This wasn’t a wordpress media problem though. The AJ site feed just doesn’t work for me–I have to stream AJ live on youtube, but the youtube version has embedding disabled… so I thought Al Jazeera had embeds blocked. Then when Woman Voter asked, I remembered AJ’s direct site feed, but I had to figure out how to snag a video basically hidden in an invisible cloth to me since it doesn’t even work on my end. Anyhow, hope it works for all those who can see it!

      • minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

AJE is using Creative Commons for their video and photos, I believe if you credit the source there is no blocked embeds.

I have a hell of a time with the AJE feed, wish they had a live audio only feed. Like satellite radio.

      • Yeah I just thought it was a more a technical streaming issue that blocked it, and maybe these other sites have the streaming version rights, but then I realized that probably I have permission too , I just can’t tell bc of all the problems I have with the feed.

I’d love a Sirius version of AJE, heh

      • Kat @ 1:11

oh goodie! thx for letting me know

Hey, you got the AJE live feed to embed? Wonderful!

  10. I’ve just added the Al Jazeera English Live feed to the post per Woman Voter’s request. I can’t check if it works properly because it’ll crash my browser again.

Let me know if it’s working/not working.
