State of the Union Address Live blog (Continued) Blah, Blah, Blah …
Posted: January 25, 2011 Filed under: 2012 presidential campaign, Live, SOTU, The Bonus Class | Tags: blah, blah response, Paul Ryan, Republican Blah, Schizophrenic SOTU 83 CommentsThis is our generation’s Sputnik moment. Two years ago, I said that we needed to reach a level of research
and development we haven’t seen since the height of the Space Race. In a few weeks, I will be sending a budget to Congress that helps us meet that goal. We’ll invest in biomedical research, information technology, and especially clean energy technology – an investment that will strengthen our security, protect our planet, and create countless new jobs for our people

How will we pay for all this innovation and infrastructure creation with a DOMESTIC SPENDING FREEZE? #bullshit#sotu

“Let’s fix what needs fiing and move forward” just like torture! #sotu

big shout-out for malpractice reform from the president.

Oh, the tort reform crap again. Even though it’s been proved it’s a myth. #sotu

We must remember we still have troops in Iraq–and some dying. The war is not over. #SOTU#NonCombatMyAss
Let’s make kissy face with the SPEAKER!!!
That dream is why I can stand here before you tonight. That dream is why a working class kid from Scranton can stand behind me. That dream is why someone who began by sweeping the floors of his father’s Cincinnati bar can preside as Speaker of the House in the greatest nation on Earth.
It’s the birth of BOEHNERELLA!!!!
owillis Oliver Willis
that was a b- speech for obama #highbar

Borger:” It wasn’t a transformational speech…I’m not sure that by not talking more about the deficit and jobs they got that done.”
Now Up Paul Ryan who is also politicizing Congresswoman Giffords.
More about how reducing spending during high unemployment actually isn’t actually flat earth economics.
More blah blah blah … I wonder if he reads his kids old Ayn Rand newsletters to his kids to put them to sleep at night?
Transcript from NPR here.
What we already know about the President’s health care law is this: Costs are going up, premiums are rising, and millions of people will lose the coverage they currently have. Job creation is being stifled by all of its taxes, penalties, mandates and fees.
Businesses and unions from around the country are asking the Obama Administration for waivers from the mandates. Washington should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. The President mentioned the need for regulatory reform to ease the burden on American businesses. We agree — and we think his health care law would be a great place to start.
Last week, House Republicans voted for a full repeal of this law, as we pledged to do, and we will work to replace it with fiscally responsible, patient-centered reforms that actually reduce costs and expand coverage.
Health care spending is driving the explosive growth of our debt. And the President’s law is accelerating our country toward bankruptcy.
Our debt is out of control. What was a fiscal challenge is now a fiscal crisis.
We cannot deny it; instead we must, as Americans, confront it responsibly.
Some one needs to tell him it’s not trust in government, it’s trust in politicians that’s at an all time low. Well, I’m depressed now.
Just take a look at what’s happening to Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom and other nations in Europe. They didn’t act soon enough; and now their governments have been forced to impose painful austerity measures: large benefit cuts to seniors and huge tax increases on everybody.

Medical malpractice reform…..holy shit the Repubs have hit the motherlode!
just posted about that on the last thread:
Obligatory line pitching Tort reefer for the GOP on HCR got the predictable applause, Lol. Most uninspired speech ever.
The talking heads will call it one of his best….
So freaking Republican, I can’t stand it. He just gave that giant tax cut for the wealthy, including the death tax crap and now the rest of us have to suffer.
But is it historic?
It’s the 8877747th Best Speech Evah, of course it’s Historic™
Husband and I groaned out loud.
He keeps missing his mark on the teleprompter…..
Oh good grief, a pan shot of McCain standing up and applauding when O blah blahs about earmarks.
This is so stale and “stuck on stupid” (h/t Zal) that if we had had the time, we could have taken the copy of the speech that leaked out ahead of time and done a near identical version using one of those annoying xtranormal animations (where you input the dialogue and the characters say it).
Oh, he is full of shit…talking about putting legislation online so we can view it. Didn’t we have transparency promises during the 08 campaign.
Exactly. Hi all, just checking in now!
Hi !!! Good to see you!!!
“We will defeat you.”
Oh really? We’ve been at it for, what, ten years now? Take a clue from the Soviets.
Hey, did he just mention Yellow Cake? You know the uranium kind?
I can’t believe Boehner’s had dry eyes all night.
He must not have gotten his drink on yet!
“Our troops come from every corner of this country – they are black, white, Latino, Asian and Native American. They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay. Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love. ”
Was it really necessary to bring in religion? I found that a bit tacked on.
No mention of atheists though . . .
or Buddhists or Janists or Wiccans or whatever … he should just quit being such a pander bear!
Or Vegans…
Did he make Boehner cry?
He tried when he talked about Biden being a working class kid from Scranton and Boehner sweeping his father’s bar in Cincinatti… I wasn’t looking up to fully catch Boehner’s reaction.
When he said, “No one here would rather live anywhere else” I said out loud, “I’d be happy to live somewhere else. Canada comes to mind!”
“State of our union is strong” WTF?
As I pointed out, this is the *real* SOTU under Bush and Barack… O made it too easy by saying it himself:
“Our infrastructure used to be the best – but our lead has slipped. South Korean homes now have greater internet access than we do. Countries in Europe and Russia invest more in their roads and railways than we do. China is building faster trains and newer airports. Meanwhile, when our own engineers graded our nation’s infrastructure, they gave us a ‘D.'”
So tell us something we don’t know…the question is what are you going to do about O Bama?
Over already?
Finally, yes. Long speech. Ran over an hour.
Rachel Maddow: “more like a CEO” – exactly. And I’ve heard way too much CEO speak, thank you.
Yeah, that closing thought sounded like a re-spin of “People are our most valued asset here at America, Inc.”
PBS is saying the speech sounded like Bill Clinton.
Maybe it tried to sound like Bill Clinton, but nobody can do big picture like Bill. O just doesn’t have the chops, nor does he have the record of actual action to point to.
From now on; he will be known as Boehnerella …
I didn’t get his big picture, seems more like the same old same old.
Bingo
Yup, nothing I could hang my hat on at all.
Husband had MSNBC on so, those are the talking heads I’m having to listen to.
Just caught Fox panel with Krauthammer leading reactions: “this is a president who can give great speeches, etc… this was not one of them. One of his weaker (weakest?) speeches”
So much for all of Krauthammer’s cheerleading of O’s speech in Tucson, not that I was ever fooled by any of it.
Some are spinning why the response in the chamber was “muted.”
Will anybody be honest? Response was muted because it was an uninspiring speech.
And because “the state of our union is strong” is a lie.
Exactly.
And because they’re worried, with good cause, that they won’t be around after next elections.
Morning Joe is saying it was just boring all around and flat to Brain Williams.
Well, that and the Republicans aren’t going to applaud him for co-opting their agenda and the Democrats–at least some of them–don’t support this list of republican crap any way.
Beltway bore Brit Hume is not happy with anything except O’s willingness to lower the corporate tax rate.
Okay, Paul Ryan up.
If you thought the speech was bad, believe it or not, the rebuttal is even worse. Shut this guy up.
Seriously.
Oh. My. Dog. He’s awful.
Well, we’ve now killed the presidential hopes of yet another right winger …
Well, it could have been worse, you could have had Christie up there ranting and raving….
Obama: “Pork sucks, tort reform, corporate tax rate too high”
Ryan: “Limited gov’t, blah blah blah.”
I can just hear Bachmann already:
“Obama and Ryan are too socialist…”
“Just look at what’s happening to Greece, and Ireland …”
Better yet, Congressman Ryan, look what’s happening in Egypt.
No kidding.
Bingo!
All I can say is Paul Ryan sounds like Bugs Bunny.
He’s really odd, isn’t he? He has jug ears too.
And his hairline looks like Eddie Munster.
RT @celindalake it’s sad when the only woman highlighted tonight is michelle bachmann #sotu #fb
I was thinking that watching MSNBC. I have yet to see any one but white guys in being asked or discussing anything.
When does Michelle Bachmann come on?
I imagine pretty soon. I should switch to CNN. I’m not sure if the main channels are ignoring her or what.
wolfie is saying she’s getting ready.
peterdaou: Then heaven help us — RT @chucktodd The Obama-Ryan messages are as good of a 2012 preview as you might get this early in the prez cycle.
I just witnessed two speeches. One was Pete and the other was Repeat. Twins separated at birth telling us how we must cut the deficit. Funny, how just a short month ago neither one cared about the deficit when they passed those tax cuts for the wealthy. I cannot believe either of these jokers. They are both corporate. Obama’s speech was a repeat in every way possible of the nerd’s speech here in Michigan. I think Obama copied it’s talking points. They are all in it together. http://www.rockfordindependent.com/main.asp?SectionID=11&SubSectionID=11&ArticleID=3541
Which is exactly why the speech went thud on the floor in the house of Congress. No Democratic pol could believe a Democratic president gave that speech. The Republicans would love it if he’d just change parties.
Lordy, after listening to Michele, I began to think she sounded like her twin sister in Fla………what her name? Kathleen Harris.
Omg… this is another one from Peter… unbelievable!
Unreal RT @RepPaulBrounMD Mr. President, you don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism. via @AriRabinHavt
It’s an advertisement of the Tea Party!!!
wtf is with her eyes?
and we’ve got nifty economic graphs!!! Sheesh … she’s the one talking about economics. Too bad she’s explaining it with fairy tale explanations.
I knew you’d love her power points.
oh, lord … please don’t tell me her speech has more energy than the last two …
It’s a populist speech. Too bad she’s got worse answers than even the other too. Not that any one who actually knows economics instead of using tinkerbelle dust would know that …
Graphic backdrop of the Constitution, Michelle? Seriously?
Oh aren’t you glad CNN has Eric Erickson on its panel to react to Michelle Bachmann’s speech? The three corporate cable channels have run amok. There’s no Democratic response to any of this.
Wonk, I was thinking of a response from Bernie Sanders. Wouldn’t his speech hit a home run.
Isn’t Donna Brazille on?
I was flipping through fast but saw her on one of the networks, I think it was ABC.
Wonder what happened with her and CNN?
Donna’s not there… Begala and Belcher are. They’re all hacks anyway. I like Fannie’s idea of Sanders giving a response, but who I really would have loved to hear a response from tonight is someone else from WI: Russ Feingold.
Oh she’s on ABC? Well she’s on ABC’s This Week panel so maybe they asked her before CNN.
Ah, that’s why she was there.
She didn’t look happy. But then she rarely does.
SO, I admit it, I didn’t watch the speech. The headline on my local news site highlighted how Obama said we must all work together, that Republicans and Democrats had to come together, and….
It almost made me barf. Honestly, can he get a new meme, please? Pretty please? How’s about, ‘Social Security: A Secure Future for Everyone!’ or something suitably liberal like that.
