State of the Union Address Live blog (Continued) Blah, Blah, Blah …

This is our generation’s Sputnik moment. Two years ago, I said that we needed to reach a level of research and development we haven’t seen since the height of the Space Race. In a few weeks, I will be sending a budget to Congress that helps us meet that goal. We’ll invest in biomedical research, information technology, and especially clean energy technology – an investment that will strengthen our security, protect our planet, and create countless new jobs for our people

How will we pay for all this innovation and infrastructure creation with a DOMESTIC SPENDING FREEZE? #bullshit#sotu

“Let’s fix what needs fiing and move forward” just like torture! #sotu

rickklein Rick Klein

big shout-out for malpractice reform from the president.

Oh, the tort reform crap again. Even though it’s been proved it’s a myth. #sotu

We must remember we still have troops in Iraq–and some dying. The war is not over. #SOTU#NonCombatMyAss

Let’s make kissy face with the SPEAKER!!!

That dream is why I can stand here before you tonight. That dream is why a working class kid from Scranton can stand behind me. That dream is why someone who began by sweeping the floors of his father’s Cincinnati bar can preside as Speaker of the House in the greatest nation on Earth.

It’s the birth of BOEHNERELLA!!!!

owillis Oliver Willis

that was a b- speech for obama #highbar

Borger:” It wasn’t a transformational speech…I’m not sure that by not talking more about the deficit and jobs they got that done.”

Now Up Paul Ryan who is also politicizing Congresswoman Giffords.
More about how reducing spending during high unemployment actually isn’t actually flat earth economics.
More blah blah blah … I wonder if he reads his kids old Ayn Rand newsletters to his kids to put them to sleep at night?
Transcript from NPR here.

What we already know about the President’s health care law is this: Costs are going up, premiums are rising, and millions of people will lose the coverage they currently have. Job creation is being stifled by all of its taxes, penalties, mandates and fees.

Businesses and unions from around the country are asking the Obama Administration for waivers from the mandates. Washington should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. The President mentioned the need for regulatory reform to ease the burden on American businesses. We agree — and we think his health care law would be a great place to start.

Last week, House Republicans voted for a full repeal of this law, as we pledged to do, and we will work to replace it with fiscally responsible, patient-centered reforms that actually reduce costs and expand coverage.

Health care spending is driving the explosive growth of our debt. And the President’s law is accelerating our country toward bankruptcy.

Our debt is out of control. What was a fiscal challenge is now a fiscal crisis.

We cannot deny it; instead we must, as Americans, confront it responsibly.

Some one needs to tell him it’s not trust in government, it’s trust in politicians that’s at an all time low. Well, I’m depressed now.

Just take a look at what’s happening to Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom and other nations in Europe. They didn’t act soon enough; and now their governments have been forced to impose painful austerity measures: large benefit cuts to seniors and huge tax increases on everybody.

Medical malpractice reform…..holy shit the Repubs have hit the motherlode!

  2. TheRock's avatar TheRock says:

He keeps missing his mark on the teleprompter…..

  3. Oh good grief, a pan shot of McCain standing up and applauding when O blah blahs about earmarks.

    • This is so stale and “stuck on stupid” (h/t Zal) that if we had had the time, we could have taken the copy of the speech that leaked out ahead of time and done a near identical version using one of those annoying xtranormal animations (where you input the dialogue and the characters say it).

  4. minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

Oh, he is full of shit…talking about putting legislation online so we can view it. Didn’t we have transparency promises during the 08 campaign.

  5. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

    “We will defeat you.”

Oh really? We’ve been at it for, what, ten years now? Take a clue from the Soviets.

  6. minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

Hey, did he just mention Yellow Cake? You know the uranium kind?

  7. Sophie's avatar Sophie says:

I can’t believe Boehner’s had dry eyes all night.

  8. “Our troops come from every corner of this country – they are black, white, Latino, Asian and Native American. They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay. Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love. ”

Was it really necessary to bring in religion? I found that a bit tacked on.

  9. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

    Did he make Boehner cry?

    • He tried when he talked about Biden being a working class kid from Scranton and Boehner sweeping his father’s bar in Cincinatti… I wasn’t looking up to fully catch Boehner’s reaction.

  10. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

When he said, “No one here would rather live anywhere else” I said out loud, “I’d be happy to live somewhere else. Canada comes to mind!”

  11. “State of our union is strong” WTF?

    • As I pointed out, this is the *real* SOTU under Bush and Barack… O made it too easy by saying it himself:

“Our infrastructure used to be the best – but our lead has slipped. South Korean homes now have greater internet access than we do. Countries in Europe and Russia invest more in their roads and railways than we do. China is building faster trains and newer airports. Meanwhile, when our own engineers graded our nation’s infrastructure, they gave us a ‘D.'”

  12. Sophie's avatar Sophie says:

    Over already?

  13. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

Rachel Maddow: “more like a CEO” – exactly. And I’ve heard way too much CEO speak, thank you.

    • Sophie's avatar Sophie says:

Yeah, that closing thought sounded like a re-spin of “People are our most valued asset here at America, Inc.”

  14. Sophie's avatar Sophie says:

PBS is saying the speech sounded like Bill Clinton.

    • Maybe it tried to sound like Bill Clinton, but nobody can do big picture like Bill. O just doesn’t have the chops, nor does he have the record of actual action to point to.

  15. dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

From now on; he will be known as Boehnerella …

  16. Fannie's avatar Fannie says:

I didn’t get his big picture, seems more like the same old same old.

  17. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

Husband had MSNBC on so, those are the talking heads I’m having to listen to.

  18. Just caught Fox panel with Krauthammer leading reactions: “this is a president who can give great speeches, etc… this was not one of them. One of his weaker (weakest?) speeches”

So much for all of Krauthammer’s cheerleading of O’s speech in Tucson, not that I was ever fooled by any of it.

  19. zaladonis's avatar zaladonis says:

Some are spinning why the response in the chamber was “muted.”

Will anybody be honest? Response was muted because it was an uninspiring speech.

And because “the state of our union is strong” is a lie.

  20. Beltway bore Brit Hume is not happy with anything except O’s willingness to lower the corporate tax rate.

  21. Carissa's avatar bluelyon says:

    Okay, Paul Ryan up.

  22. Sophie's avatar Sophie says:

If you thought the speech was bad, believe it or not, the rebuttal is even worse. Shut this guy up.

  23. Obama: “Pork sucks, tort reform, corporate tax rate too high”

Ryan: “Limited gov’t, blah blah blah.”

I can just hear Bachmann already:

“Obama and Ryan are too socialist…”

  24. zaladonis's avatar zaladonis says:

“Just look at what’s happening to Greece, and Ireland …”

Better yet, Congressman Ryan, look what’s happening in Egypt.

  25. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

All I can say is Paul Ryan sounds like Bugs Bunny.

  26. RT @celindalake it’s sad when the only woman highlighted tonight is michelle bachmann #sotu #fb

  27. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

When does Michelle Bachmann come on?

  28. peterdaou: Then heaven help us — RT @chucktodd The Obama-Ryan messages are as good of a 2012 preview as you might get this early in the prez cycle.

  29. Silent Kate's avatar Silent Kate says:

I just witnessed two speeches. One was Pete and the other was Repeat. Twins separated at birth telling us how we must cut the deficit. Funny, how just a short month ago neither one cared about the deficit when they passed those tax cuts for the wealthy. I cannot believe either of these jokers. They are both corporate. Obama’s speech was a repeat in every way possible of the nerd’s speech here in Michigan. I think Obama copied it’s talking points. They are all in it together. http://www.rockfordindependent.com/main.asp?SectionID=11&SubSectionID=11&ArticleID=3541

    • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

Which is exactly why the speech went thud on the floor in the house of Congress. No Democratic pol could believe a Democratic president gave that speech. The Republicans would love it if he’d just change parties.

    • Fannie's avatar Fannie says:

Lordy, after listening to Michele, I began to think she sounded like her twin sister in Fla………what her name? Kathleen Harris.

  30. Omg… this is another one from Peter… unbelievable!

Unreal RT @RepPaulBrounMD Mr. President, you don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism. via @AriRabinHavt

  31. dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

It’s an advertisement of the Tea Party!!!

  32. dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

oh, lord … please don’t tell me her speech has more energy than the last two …

    • dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

It’s a populist speech. Too bad she’s got worse answers than even the other too. Not that any one who actually knows economics instead of using tinkerbelle dust would know that …

  33. Graphic backdrop of the Constitution, Michelle? Seriously?

  34. Oh aren’t you glad CNN has Eric Erickson on its panel to react to Michelle Bachmann’s speech? The three corporate cable channels have run amok. There’s no Democratic response to any of this.

  35. Rikke's avatar Sima says:

SO, I admit it, I didn’t watch the speech. The headline on my local news site highlighted how Obama said we must all work together, that Republicans and Democrats had to come together, and….

It almost made me barf. Honestly, can he get a new meme, please? Pretty please? How’s about, ‘Social Security: A Secure Future for Everyone!’ or something suitably liberal like that.
