I want my money back! (AND my country!)

The U.S. taxpayers provide $50 million per party for these shams called conventions. After watching the chicago version of a staged roll call and what amounted to a real deathblow to democracy, I want to ask every one to write their congressional representatives and senators and demand their money back!  I don’t feel like I need to pay for advertising rigged elections, false unity, and forced results.

I didn’t blog yesterday on Hillary’s speech and I’m really reluctant to do so on Bill’s speech because they both did an excellent job doing exactly what the party demanded.  They were brilliant speeches making the case against McCain and any continuation of the Bush 43 policies.  This was supposed to make the case for Senator Obama.  I felt they tried, but since the case FOR Obama is basically nothing BUT the case AGAINST McCain, even the brilliant oratory of skilled politicians couldn’t do it for me.  I’m glad that many AA’s will get the chance to vote for a black presidential candidate, but there has to be something going for a presidential candidate other than an opponent that doesn’t share your views and historical opportunities.  That candidate has to have a proven record that shows he’s up for the job.  Senator Obama falls woefully short on that account and I cannot turn my country over to another President that requires training wheels and is so obviously over his head on issues regarding the economy and national security.  He may get to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, but he also has to decide what to do with the resurgence of Russian Aggression, Osama Bin Laden, and a stagnant economy that is not providing equal opportunities for all Americans.

I am so damned tired of feeling that the Democratic Party has offered us the lesser of two evils and I just need to fall in, I could scream.  I want to feel inspired by a presidential candidate, not feel like I have to reluctantly go along with whatever the party insiders offer up.  I think, PUMAS, it’s time for a party of our own making.

I’ve spoken about this election to what I consider typical Americans.  I asked several of the women I teach with at the University if they’ve been watching any of the convention.  I’ve talked to my dad and sister in Seattle.  Every one pretty much agrees, once again, we have two choices that none of us really want.  Dad–a Republican–doesn’t want McCain.  Most of the folks I speak to, other than my young students, really don’t want Obama.  I hear so many folks saying that this is the worse choice they’ve had for a long time and they feel like staying home rather than exercising their most sacred duty and wonderful gift from our ancestors, the right to vote for who will lead us.

So what I want to know is why do have to pay for this sham upfront if I’m going to spend the next four years paying for this Hobson’s choice?  Why do I want to scream and say, not again!  This is just another set of mediocre politicans that have pandered to the worst of their party’s interests.

Something has to be done about the two party system.  Since the birth of the televised convention, democracy is becoming less and less vibrant.  It is more a televised attempt at giving us what they want. I even felt that the primaries and caucuses this year were a complete waste of money.  They’ve been fixed and gamed to produce a desired result.  Caucuses need to be eliminated.  Primaries need to be held on a rotating calander and a regional basis with a very short election cycle.  Iowa keeps creating these losers and needs to be put into a pack with the rest of the heartland and no state should have any kind of special status.

Last presidential election cycle, I felt I got stuck with John Kerry by the time Louisiana had it’s primary.  I knew he was a complete loser but went along any way.  By that time, I had no choice in it.  My vote was meaningless.  I also felt that when I voted for him, I knew I was voting for a predestined loser.  This time, I refuse to do it.  Obama cannot win and I refuse to put any effort into pretending he will.  I’m frankly expecting a repeat of the McGovern-Nixon election.  Have any of you ever heard of a situation where a candidate gets a negative bounce with a vp selection and during a convention?  The DNC is too caught up with itself to stop this disaster in process.

I’d like to put my two cents in for the future of the PUMA movement.  It’s something I’ve been putting forward here for some time.  We need to spend the next four years building the infrastructure for a viable THIRD party.  One that is based on the American people.  One that removes itself from corporate control and the control of those loud and obnoxious interest groups we see every convention time.  I don’t want to pander to evangelicals, I don’t want us split up by skin color,  and I definitely don’t want to obsess on wedge issues.  I just want a party that is interested in the economic issues and the safety issues we face every day as americans.  I want to focus on our shared interests.  I want to focus on  our health, our safety, the future of our children, jobs, and an equitable tax system.

Is that too much to ask?

Message DAY ONE: It’s all about us DNC Elites!

I didn’t watch the DNC coverage from start to finish.  It was mostly a big yawn and there were a lot of good Law and Order re-runs on also.  I did channel surf enough to hear a few commentators discuss it as a missed opportunity.  Rove, Gergen, and Carville all said that if there was any message in the four hours of tv coverage, it was buried.

I’m going to have to disagree here.  I heard a message loud and clear.  The message was this: “We are the elite of the Democratic Party and it’s all about us!”

They could have spoken eloquently and fiercely about how the economy under this President has languished. How financial markets and housing markets are failing ordinary American because no one stepped up to find ways to monitor new fangled debt instruments and the risk they entailed.  They could’ve said, look, folks are losing their homes but the biggest cheats of the system get a bail-out with your tax money.  But instead, it was all about Pelosi.

One of them could’ve spoken about a war and a commitment of resources and human lives based on lies.  How America the hero of World War 2 is now seen more as America the Torturer.  How the current President has used the War on Terror as an excuse to strengthen executive power with a third finger raised to the Constitution.  How he has made our military so tired and overworked, we have few responses to the re-awakening of mother Russia.  How his judgment of Putin was flawed and dangerous.  But instead, it was all about Teddy.

They could have talked passionately about how ordinary Americans are struggling to fill up their gas tanks, pay their electric bills, and make do on incomes that are losing purchasing power every year.  They could have spoken fiercely about how terrifically underfunded their retirements will be or how their primary savings vehicle-their homes and social security-are jeopardized on many levels.  They might’ve mentioned how Dubya has worked hard to pass laws that will leave a crushing debt to our grandchildren.  How we cannot leave a legacy that sees our kids and grandkids as the first Americans to say they are worse off than their parents.  That is all are worse off but the hyper wealthy who are doing just fine as the rest of America takes on huge debt to pay for medical bills and their childrens’ education. But instead, it was all about Claire, and Michelle, and Jim.

This is the new DNC folks.  A group of folks so taken with themselves that they think the votes of 18 million are unnecessary.  They’ll just find some more some where. They’ll find them in folks that will worship them and their stories.  They’ll find people who don’t raise their eyebrows at arugala or buying just one pair of earrings with their rebate checks instead of paying for their electric bill.  They will find some one who wouldn’t care if some fat cat who is now sitting in jail help you purchase your home.  There has to be some one out there that will overlook the reality–their reality–for the reality of the DNC elites.

If there was ever any doubt in my mind that I’m now an independent it was extinguished last night.  This is not a government of, by, and for the people any more. It’s a government that enriches a pantheon of life time suckling pigs who think only of themselves and protecting their status.  They’re not even hiding it any more! Bring on the vibrators!  Bring on the lubricant!  Bring on the dildos!  Last night was one huge public display of self-love!  I need a shower.  Somebody pull the plug on this thing!  There might be children watching!

Hey BIDEN! Don’t Insult Women with Doctorates!

“Ladies and gentlemen,
my wife Jill, who you’ll meet soon,
is drop dead gorgeous…

she also has her doctorate degree, which is a problem”

Senator Joe Biden … VP and Presidential Wannabe

Hey BIDEN !!! Stop Picking on Smart Women! Hate to out myself, but I’m an economist who teaches economics to college students, and I’m working on my doctorate. What kind of stereotype do you have in your mind? I also play jazz piano and this is me.

Any more stereotypes you wanna discuss?”

Do you ave ANY idea what it means to get a doctorate?

I’ll tell you.  It’s hell, it’s one test after another.  It’s extremely hard classes and  one research paper after another.  You do a lot of grunt work, you smile,  and you know that most of the glory goes to your teacher.  Wanna do some time derivatives?  Wanna take on some growth models?  Wanna learn what it really takes to stimulate an economy?  Analyze moral hazard and determine why CEOs cheat?  Discuss derivatives… financial or math?  Call me.  It’s on. I’ll match my ability to turn around the economy against yours ANY day.  Not only that!  I can do it while playing Gerswhin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a piano concerto of your choice, or a great Monk riff.

YOU ARE an effete snob.  Go back to your DC elitists or come down here  to the ninth ward for a throw down!  I challenge you to make it on the salaries any of my neighbors make any day!

If that’s not enough you want to discuss my Indian friends, who have doctorates?  Perhaps, the one that’s dating my daughter?  They’re both in med school.  None of them are running 7-11s or Dunkin’ Doughnuts.   I also have plenty of black students down here that are “clean” and “articulate”.  Would you like to meet them?  What exactly would you say to them for your so-called compliments?

Let’s discuss your vote for the Iraq war or how you chased photographers so you could get your pic taken with Dubya after 9/11.  Would you rather discuss your inability to support Dr. Anita Hill and her charges against now Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas?  Obama said he wouldn’t put his name up for nomination, yet you didnt’ stand up and stop the slurs against a very brave women who detailed a hell of sexual abuse.  Why didn’t you stand up against the republicans for her truths?  How about, hmmmmmmm, the ordinary Americans that now suffer because you’ve sponsored bills that make bankruptcy for ordinary Americans more difficult? How about the laws that would punish predatory lending?  Wanna talk about those?   Yeah, right, that’s what I thought.  Much easier to joke about the fact your wife is highly educated and you’re embarrased rather than go down to the alter and confess that you’ve sold out to corporate interests.

We know you’ve got ambition. We know you have brains.  We also know that like Senator Obama, you will do anything to get ahead.

Guess what Joe, you are not the smartest man on the planet and there will be some one to out you as just another ambitious wannabe.

Even Obama doesn’t think he’s qualified …

Once, again, a huge build up,  a big no suprise, and a BIG Obama Gaffe … it seems, without the teleprompter, Obama can’t even introduce his vp choice, correctly …

At least we know who is the recipient of the 3 am call:  it’s Joe BIDEN!!!

Super delegates PLEASE, before the REALLY bad republican ads start up … RESCUE our chance at getting the presidency back!!!!  NOMINATE HILLARY!
