*A recall for over 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese has been initiated for potential metal fragment contamination, with products sold at major retailers like Aldi, Target, and Walmart.

*The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has reclassified the recall as “Class I,” indicating a serious health risk. Consumers are urged to check for affected products, not to consume them, and to return or discard them.

• Shredded mozzarella: Including low-moisture part-skim mozzarella.
• Italian-style shredded cheese blends: Sold under various store and brand names.
• Pizza-style shredded cheese blends: Including four-cheese and two-cheese blends.

Check the “best-by” or “sell-by” date: All recalled products have dates between January and March 2026.

The FDA says they were distributed to 31 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, as well as Puerto Rico.

• Product: Various brands of shredded cheese produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc.
• Contaminant: Potential metal fragments.
• Risk: The U.S. FDA has designated this a “Class I” recall, meaning the products may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
