I have not voted for Trump nor will I. He is a buffoon at best. That said. He hasn’t called the press the enemy in quite the same context as his “illustrious” companions in the cartoon above. The current “Press” is hostile to American democracy. I was a reporter who grew up in the shadow of the Woodward and Bernstein days, back when the Washington Post could proudly state, “Democracy dies in darkness.” Now, the Post, the New York Times, CNN, NPR as well as their soulless right wing counterparts, Fox News, Breitbart, The Gateway Pundit et al, work tirelessly to create and perpetuate darkness.

As journalists in the 1980s, we knew no human being can really be objective. But we also knew as reporters, it was incumbent upon us to be fair; to seek out facts even if we didn’t particularly like them. Today’s media practitioners may fancy themselves journalists. They are not. Journalism is not on life support. It is quite dead, replaced by legions of often semi-literate propaganda artists. The Fourth Estate has withered away, quite possibly taking “The American Experiment” along with it.
