Historic Hillary Open Thread

Good Morning Sky Dancers!!

What a wonderful day! No negative media spin or Bernie bro nastiness can wipe the smile off my face this morning. She did it! She ran the table–Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri went for Hillary last night. That glass ceiling has a hell of a lot more cracks in it this morning.

Here’s a fresh thread for you until we hear from JJ a bit later on.

Just a few headlines and I’ll turn it over to you.

Nate Cohn at the NYT: Hillary Clinton’s Excellent Night and a Peek Ahead to the Fall.

Ezra Klein at Vox: Hillary Clinton had an amazing night — and not just because of her victories.

Glenn Thrush at Politico: 5 takeaways from Tuesday’s primaries. Clinton cements it and Rubio turns prophet as the GOP marches toward a messy convention.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Recounts possible in both of Missouri’s presidential primaries.

The Hill: Trump risks falling short of delegate count for nomination.

NBC News: Obama Nominates Federal Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.

We are watching history being made. Let’s enjoy every minute of it right up until Hillary takes the oath of office next January. Have a wonderful day everyone!

I am so happy and so proud of Hillary Clinton!!!

    • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

      Ditto!!!!

Last night was one of the best moments of my life, and I know many, many others, especially women, feel the same. When Hillary wins the nomination and becomes POTUS the two things I thought could not possibly happen in my lifetime (assuming I live until the inauguration) will have happened. Marriage Equality and a WOMAN POTUS. Believe it or not, the second is more important to me than the first, because the 2nd effects everyone on the planet, especially every woman and every girl. HILLARY 2016!!!!

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

It’s all so incredible, but it’s true! I never thought I’d live to see an African American president either. Will we live to see a Latino president? An Asian-American president? Who knows?

        • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

I began believing in the 90’s that we’d see an AA POTUS, but a woman POTUS never in my wildest dreams. Maybe Hillary will ignore Chris Matthews call for Hillary to pick Kasich as her VP and select Julian Castro.

          • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

Dak thinks it will be Joaquin Castro.

          • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Either one would be great. Julian is currently Secretary of HUD

          • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

He was a dyed in the wool DINO, and didn’t even try to hide it. He calculated that was the only way he could become a U.S. Senator from TN. He calculated incorrectly.

        • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Do you remember Harold Ford, Jr, from TN? The Democratic Party was grooming him for the job before Obama. Then he lost the bid to move from the House to the Senate. That coupled with the problems of his politician father, Harold Ford, Sr. and one of his Aunts who was also in politics in Memphis, shelved him permanently.

        • janicen's avatar janicen says:

I’m not seeing Castro because he doesn’t have the gravitas to be President yet. I think it would look like pandering. I’m not sure who it would be, I’m wondering about the possibility of someone from Virginia, either Tim Kaine or McAuliffe only because of some oddities I’m seeing here. If not Veep, McAuliffe would certainly make an excellent Commerce Secretary because he’s knocking job creation out of the park here with some of the deals he’s doing with companies from the U.S. and overseas.

Bernie’s campaign is still claiming he has all the enthusiasm and momentum. Now he’s going to start winning states and the superdelegates will switch to him.

    Bernie’s Longshot Victory Strategy.

    • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Well, there’s always a “chance” that Bernie could get back in it after last nights devastating losses, but I’m thinking it’s about the same odds of me swimming the English Channel.

    • NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

“The stakes are so high in November, the superdelegates will feel a special responsibility [to Sanders] this time around,” Kirk added.

      LOLlololol!

      • Valhalla's avatar Valhalla says:

All this “it’s still possible” stuff from Bernie’s folks risks turning him and his supporters into a joke. Just how ridiculous this is was mostly understood among political analysts and data wonks before last night, but now it’s spreading out into a general audience.

If he really believes in his ideas in issues, he needs to call off the dogs or they too will turn into just a big punchline.

Bernie should concede MO to prevent the expense of a recount. The number of delegates at stake is negligible.

    • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Who knows with Bernie. That pecker thing makes men do strange things.

      • List of X's avatar List of X says:

Mouse, if you don’t like BernieBro sexism towards Hillary, you can probably see how this comment is just as inappropriate, don’t you?

        • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

Oh, that was sexist? Don’t even bother trying to shame me X, not after months of what I’ve heard from the Berners, including those who defend them. My quip pales in comparison. When you’ve lived through 70+ years of Misogyny aimed point blank at you and every other woman you know, then you can talk to me about appropriate.

          • Ron4Hills's avatar Ron4Hills says:

I know you were kidding, but what you said is wrong. It’s the balls that make us act this way.

          • NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

            LOL!

          • List of X's avatar List of X says:

Your quip pales in comparison to 70+ years of misogyny, but you probably wouldn’t have excused someone who said the same thing, changing “peckers” to “vajayjays” and “men” to “women”.

          • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

“It’s the balls that make us act this way.”

I knew it was one of those thingys. I keep getting all those man parts confused. 🙂

        • janicen's avatar janicen says:

An excellent illustration of the oppressor class just not getting it. See X, women are still the underclass. This is patriarchy. As a male you earn more, you pay less, you get promoted more easily with fewer qualifications, you have the final say in your healthcare decisions. The language of oppression such as mouse’s “quip” doesn’t threaten your status or endanger your life one iota. Your complaint is comparable to white people claiming reverse racism when black people make a “quip” about white people. The quip does white people no harm, we are still the oppressors and black people are the oppressed. Sexist remarks against women hurt women in tangible ways and we live with those consequences every single day.

Men’s sexism perpetuates oppression and injustice toward women. Women’s sexism directed at men does what, hurt their feelings? Not even, if you really think about it.

          • List of X's avatar List of X says:

No, I totally get it. Male means oppressor, female means oppressed. Doesn’t matter who the male is, whether it’s a gay man who can’t mention his personal life for the fear of getting fired, or a black male whose appearance triggers a Pavlovian get-the-gun-and-shoot reflex in police, or an Arab who is automatically seen as a terrorist, or homeless disabled vet who had to go to Vietnam thanks to another recent male privilege called “the draft”, or an immigrant who has to fear getting deported – they’re all oppressors, not any different from domestic abusers, rape apologists, good-old-boys corporate boards, and Bible-thumpers who’d rather see a woman die than get an abortion.
How could it be hard to understand? Got a pecker – oppressor. No pecker – oppressed.

        • janicen's avatar janicen says:

Yes, I know you are being sarcastic but yes, you can’t escape male privilege whether you want it or agree with it or not. Take your list of oppressed classes, black, gay, disabled, etc and add female on top of that and you have intersectionality. Or take the case of Hillary Clinton, white, wealthy, Ivy League education, but yet she it treated as a lesser by men just because she is a woman. No amount of privilege in those other areas can change her diminished status as a woman. That’s patriarchy.

          • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

The people who can’t see it, are the people who refuse to see it. It’s like white people who refuse to see they benefit in this society from being white. In the United States only 14% of Business Executives are Women. Why? The same disparity exists in the Executive ranks globally. Women hold only 25% of Statewide Elective Executive Office. Why? In the Federal Government women hold only 104 of the 535 member seats in the U.S. Congress. Why? There have only been two women nominated by their Party to be on Presidential ballot, both as VP. Why? In the history of the country there have been only three women who have been the Secretary of State, which is considered to be the most important cabinet position. Why? There have been 112 Justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, only 4 have been women. Why? There have only been 30 women in the History of the United States to hold Cabinet posts. Why? And the rates of poverty globally among women is significantly higher than men. Why? You can choose any society on the globe and find that women are always at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder in that society. Why? As for our own country only in 4 States are the poverty rates for men the same as women. In the other 46 States poverty is higher among Women and in some places much higher. Why? Other than the fact that we’ve only been allowed to vote for 95 years, the why is easily answered. Men in positions of power and authority pull other men up while leaving women behind. That has everything to do with gender. Even gay men, which is an oppressed group by most standards, experience more upward mobility in business than women, straight or gay. That’s not to say that all men experience every benefit of being born a man, but there are undoubtedly social and economic benefits that come with being born a man, just as there are social and economic benefits that come with being born white. So yes, it is the “pecker” thing!

          • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

            Spot on!!!

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

He won’t do it. He still thinks he can win the nomination. See my link above.

      • ANonOMouse's avatar ANonOMouse says:

He’s so delusional. From everything you’ve written and linked it seems that it would take significant victories, with large margins of victory, for him to get back in it. And now he wants Super delegates to come to him after he’s made a huge deal out of their undue influence?

        • NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

Men are so swayed by their emotions. Male hormones, ya know.

        • Enheduanna's avatar Enheduanna says:

And Bernie doesn’t see what the optics of that would look like – for the Democratic party operatives to nominate someone outside their party to run instead of the first woman ever to be nominated as a presidential candidate – who has just won the popular vote in the primary itself. It’s beyond delusion I’m afraid with just a whiff of male entitlement maybe?

      • List of X's avatar List of X says:

There’s a 99% chance he won’t win, but you know how highly Bernie thinks of the power of 1%.
Anyway, it shouldn’t be too difficult for Hillary to get to the majority of delegates even without the superdelegates, which is when it’s really going to be over for Sanders.

  5. janicen's avatar janicen says:

I think that the near riots in Chicago between the Trump goons and the Bernie Bros helped increase turnout for Hillary yesterday. I think voters were horrified at the possibility of a Trump presidency. The imagery and inevitable comparison to 1930’s Germany spurred voters to turn out and vote for Hillary to secure the nomination for her in order to defeat Trump. The loss in MI was also a wake up call that people need to get out there and vote for Hillary unless we want to spend 4 years looking at a White House painted in gold leaf. Even the Clinton people were not expecting a win in MO. Yesterday was a great day.

  13. dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

How quickly they forget 2008 when Hillary won all the big States and the popular vote and had the rules committee taking voter elected delegates from her in Michigan and Florida. It’s a little late for that now. Plus, his colleagues don’t like him and he continually disses the party and the President. Vermont must have better drugs than the rest of us. Hillary stayed in but she eventually suspended her campaign and did what was best for the party and wholeheartedly supported Obama. Superdelegates are party people. They’d never trust him to put the party first for anything. Especially after his comments about running as a Dem for media attention only.

I still have my TShirts from 2008 – the one that says “This one’s for you” and the other one with the backbone – I wore the former one today when I went to the grocery store. It felt great!

I also donated to her today and ordered the Hillary 16 button – sweet, sweet 16! – and a new bumper sticker since my other one is frayed and faded. Some of my neighbors just hate Hillary, so it will be fun to paste that on my car. I have the poster from 2008 and should frame it and put it in my window! I’d love to have her autograph it.

It’s been such a great day knowing she’s on her way to that nomination and win as next POTUS!

From Wonkette: “Sorry the look and sound of a powerful lady saying powerful words makes your little boy pant-bumps shrivel up and die inside, but you fellas had better get used to it. By the look of things, we have many years more of this ahead.”

Wonkette nails it. There are a lot of menz, especially those who regard themselves as important, who are shriveling right before our eyes. How could one female neuter so many men just by raising her voice a decibel higher than they think appropriate or by not smiling exactly when they think she should? Woman Power is an awesome thing!!!!!!!
