Live Blog: Super Saturday Primaries and Caucuses

Good Evening Politics Junkies!
Today’s another busy day for the candidates on both sides of the aisle. There probably won’t be many surprises, although no one seems to have any idea what will happen in Nebraska on the Republican side.
Ted Cruz has already won Kansas, which has large population of evangelical Christians. Cruz is addressing his supporters right now. I’m going to give that one a miss.
As we all know already, Bernie Sanders will likely take Kansas and Nebraska and gain some delegates, but Hillary Clinton is expected to win Louisiana overwhelmingly and that will wipe out the gains Sanders makes today and then some. Right now Clinton is 199 pledged delegates ahead of Sanders and she will add to that total tonight. We’ll have to wait awhile though, because Louisiana’s polls don’t close until 9PM ET.
Here’s some background information on today’s contests at Vox: Elections 2016: Today’s poll closing times and results.
Washington Post: Ted Cruz wins Kansas caucuses as 3 other ‘Super Saturday’ states vote in GOP contest.
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who has sought to present himself as the chief alternative to GOP front-runner Donald Trump, secured a strong victory in the Kansas presidential caucuses Saturday, according to a projection by the Associated Press, as voting and ballot counting continued in three other GOP contests.
With 53 percent of the vote counted, the Associated Press called the victory for Cruz (R-Tex). He led Trump with 49 percent of the vote to 25 percent for Trump, according to the AP.
he 2016 election pressed forward Saturday as five states held presidential nominating contests across the country. Dubbed “Super Saturday,” Republicans are also voting in Louisiana and are caucusing in Maine and Kentucky. Democrats are voting in Louisiana and are caucusing in Kansas and Nebraska.
The presidential race entered a new stage Tuesday after real estate mogul Donald Trump (R) and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton (D) secured victories in a majority of the 11 partisan primaries and caucuses held that day, when hundreds of delegates were at stake. Clinton — the Democratic establishment favorite — has pulled sharply ahead of rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, while Trump’s wave of populist support showed little sign of waning even as he has endured scathing attacks from GOP leaders.
The fallout from Saturday’s contests will again pitch the election forward, as Clinton and Trump’s rivals seek to keep them at bay by maximizing their delegate counts. The two front-runners, meanwhile, are looking to protect their leads and to sustain their momentum ahead of a series of high-stakes, high-delegate races in mid-March.
I’m going to turn the floor over to you while I look around to see what’s going on. I’ll add some links in the comment thread, and hope you will too.

That photo of the Kennedy’s takes me back. They all look kids and I thought they were old!
I know. I couldn’t resist that photo.
I had the same reaction. They look so young.
It’s like yesterday Riverbird.
Very touching……..wow, my Mom had a fantastic photo of John Kennedy. Would love to share it, but not sure how to download a photo.
WaPo:
‘The guy is Hitler’: Louis C.K. begs fans not to vote for Donald Trump
Drumpf hasn’t killed millions. So there’s that. But the comparisons to Hitler bother me … for being unfair to Hitler. Hitler actually had ideals — horrible ones, but he did believe in a cause larger than himself. Probably, perhaps, Drumpf couldn’t do as much damage as Hitler, being a mere dishonest, self-absorbed, gross, carnival barker. So maybe it’s a weird kind of blessing that in some ways he’s a lower form of sewage blockage than the 20th century’s worst mind.
I’m not a big Louis C.K. fan after reading rumblings about some possible sexual assault accusations from female comics that have been silenced because hey, he’s rich, famous, and married so give the guy a break.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorses Hillary while seeming to believe there was something to Whitewater, Benghazi and Eghazi.
Jeebus, what a lot of people believe those smears. Well, at least they endorsed her.
Thanks BB for keeping us altogether .
BB, sure has brought a lot of comfort to our souls, put us at ease many a time.
Thanks. What a sweet thing to say.
I’m watching CNN. Is it significant that Bernie will be speaking in Warren Michigan?
Is there a college there?
Oh, I get it now. Warren, MI.
LOL
Home base of the Reagan Democrats and Ron Fournier.
I was thinking Janice was making an allusion to Bernie’s dream of an endorsement from Sen. Warren of MA.
Probably but I was going for the racism angle.
Yes. I guess I should have included an emoticon! 😉
Both relevant angles. LOL!
Warren’s the county seat of Macomb County. He’s probably speaking at Macomb Community College.
Bernie and Hillary will be speaking tonight at the MI Democratic Party Dinner. Bill is going to be there with Hillary. She will speak after Bernie, according to Dan Merica of CNN.
I’ve got my four grands here, hamburgers, hot dogs, fresh french fries, and coleslaw. The cukes taste terrible this time of year, not worth buying. Carrot cake for desert, and movie for the kiddos.
Sounds like fun. Have a nice time with the kids.
Here’s an interesting article about the financial scandals at Burlington College where Jane Sanders was president until she had to resign in 2011. They’ve gone through two more presidents since then.
http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/local/2016/02/22/founder-sues-burlington-college-alleges-misused-funds/80750564/
That’s really too bad for the students, and the faculty. Still, Jane’s not Bernie.
No. I just thought it was interesting. However she is speaking for the campaign and saying very nasty things about Hillary. I think she needs to be accountable for that.
I’ve heard Jane say many times “voters just need to get to know Bernie better” in order to support him. The more I’ve “gotten to know”, the more I’ve come to dislike them both. Actively. I’m with Hillary on more love and kindness. I support leadership that can express disagreement without being petty and disparaging.

I was thinking of the many governors, like Brownback, and Scott Walker, and Raunder in Ill, who rode into office when we had the lowest turn out of voters. I like that Hillary is going to change this, and really work for younger people to really get involved at all levels of government.
CNN called Kansas for Sanders.
Kansas for Cruz @ 100% reporting. Maine running Cruz 43% to Trump 37% @ 9% reporting. KY Trump 42% to Cruz 30% @ 26% reporting.
Wapo is saying that Sanders in leading in Maine, but they aren’t showing any reporting yet.
Ok they just said Sanders won KS but no reporting
I don’t know and I don’t think they know what is going on. Are the dems even in Maine this time?
The Maine Dem Caucus is tomorrow
Alright, LA an NE, no reporting for dems.
I get the idea that penis comparisons didn’t work well for Rubio.
Sanders winning Nebraska as expected.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Lincoln and Omaha still being counted according to CNN. I don’t know if those will go for Bernie or not.
Cruz has Maine @ 100% reporting, but Wapos hasn’t moved him to the win column yet. Trump is holding onto KY with 43% to Cruz 30% and 30% reporting.
Wapo just put NE in the win column for Sanders 55% to Clinton 45% @ 75% reporting.
He won’t get as many delegates from Nebraska as he was expecting.
LA is going to Trump 45% to Cruz 24% @ 0% reporting
LA is going to Clinton 75% vs Sanders 21% @ 0% reporting
0 percent? Based on exit polls or what?
I get the idea that Wapo didn’t have many people on the ground this time.
LA finally has 24% reporting, with Clinton 72% vs Sanders 22%.
Hillary speaking on MSNBC.
CNN already called Louisiana for Hillary. That was quick.
We kicked butt and took names!
Hillary’s speech is so different. His was a low blow against her integrity and was for nothing while hers is a positive message of inclusion and growth. Bring it on!
Every time I listen to Bernie speak this is what I see in my mind
I’m so tired of him beating that horse that I can’t wait for this to be over.
Lol
Yes and his horse really is dead. It’s not gonna get up again.
His horse is definitely on it’s way to the dog food factory. 🙂
roflmao
Have you ever listened to anyone on the campaign trail that is more repetitious than Bernie? He’s flogged that horse to death!!!!!
Yeah, I got the last of it, it was good.
they gave Clnton the LA win @ , <1% reporting
//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Hahaha!
Media people saying it’s a big night for Bernie even though Hillary will extend her delegate lead.
Geez! CNN said Bernie’s wins in NE and KS are expected because they are all white with very few Democrats and few delegates so who cares? lol!
Hillary’s campaign knew she would lose these 2 caucuses and the Maine caucus tomorrow. Still, she will walk away from these contests with more delegates than Bernie. Tuesday she will kick his ass in Michigan & Mississippi and a week later she will whip him in FL, IL, NC, OH (Haven’t seen any polls from MO so that one is sketchy)! Regardless, after the 15th this thing is basically over. But Bernie will persevere without a chance to win because that’s what he does.
Omaha is around 14% black and whites altogether are around 73% So, I would have thought a few precincts might have shown differently. On the other hand, Omaha is the home of Malcolm X, born not too far from where my GM had a Chiropractic office.
She got 46% there so it’s not like she got skunked. Also remember that NE is a caucus so working poor people are generally excluded since they can’t devote half a day or more just to vote.
And that’s what I hate about the caucus process. It locks out a segment of society that works weekends and/or can’t stay at a caucus site for several hours. The DNC needs to get rid of them altogether and financially assist those States that can’t afford a primary. There was a lot of early voting in NE and those folks were likely people who couldn’t be there because of work or older & disabled folks who can’t take the rigors of the caucus.
MSNBC interrupted Hillary’s speech so they could have a long discussion about Hillary yelling into the mike. Lawrence O’Donnell and Chris Matthews are such fucking assholes.
Oh, and then they had a long discussion about how none of this complaining about Hillary’s “tone” is about gender.
I couldn’t believe it when they cut away to complain about her voice! Goddamn it, she was saying important stuff about getting younger people involved, I really wanted others to hear it.
What? I was watching CNN and she looked tired and sounded like she needed to give her voice a rest but I wouldn’t characterize it as yelling. Those two ass clowns need to STFU.
Agreed.
I turned it off while Lawrence was mid-sentence.
Poor Lawrence, he’s trying so hard to say something relevant.
Dear Mr. O’Donnell
Love,
Mouse
You got that Sister. I abhor MSNBC’s ongoing criticism of her voice modulation all the while Bernie is hollering his lungs out and no one has a problem with it.
Trump and Cruz are still battling in KY, Trump 38%, Cruz 32% @ 42% reporting
Has anyone said what the Sanders win was in KS? Wapo is still reporting the win but no figures.
They haven’t reported the number yet!!!
Gawker: Voicemails Reveal Donald Trump’s Cozy Relationship With the Liberal Media
AP live blog:
We actually had that as our guiding strategy. We were told to work to extend the lead her so much that Kansas and Nebraska would be irrelevant. Guess we did that! I called Shreveport by midday. Many of the black voters I spoke with had no idea who BS even was!
Excellent!
Kansas is now reporting 100% with Sanders 68% vs Clinton 32%
LA was all Clinton but Catahoula Co now puts Sanders ahead 86 votes to Clinton 83 votes with 31 % voting. It’s always amazing how 1 or 2 votes can make a difference in the right place.
Clinton has the win in LA @71% vs 22% with 42% reporting
From one of my favorite writers:
//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Gosh, I don’t miss reading her.
Dowd is a catty, malicious, nasty pain the ass. When Hillary becomes Madam President, I expect Maureen to end up in Bellevue.
She really is a horrible person. That woman needs help.
KY is going to take a while there are a lot of precincts that haven’t begun to report, and Kasich is making a showing here @ 15%.
Rubio @ 17%, so either of these two could upset the apple cart.
Trump got KY @ 35% to Cruz 31% with 75% reporting.
Cruz and Trump are about tied in LA. Trump may pull it out, but it will be close. Interesting.
Nate Silver says networks shouldn’t be calling it for Trump. It’s too close to call. Have networks called it? I couldn’t stand to watch either CNN or MSNBC.
100% reporting LA, Trump 41.4% vs Cruz 37.8%
Hillary’s 221k votes in LA today was more than twice what Bernie received in all 3 states. She now leads him by 1.5M in the popular vote and increased her delegate lead. Nice day,
Yey!
It was a nice day. After we get past Maine tomorrow, the next few contests should belong to Hillary and there are a ton of delegates in those contests.
