Live Blog #2: Midterm Election Returns

vote-counting-001

Hang in There, Sky Dancers!!

There are lots more races to be decided. Here’s a fresh thread to discuss them. I’m pretty pooped out, but I’m going to stay up as long as I can–at least I want to know who will be the new Governor of Massachusetts before I hit the sack.

I’ve been looking around for articles to post, but I don’t see much that isn’t depressing. I’ll add more in the comments as I find things, and Dakinikat said she would look around too.

Thanks to all of you for participating tonight. I don’t know what I would have done without you guys!!

Martha Coakley is leading Charlie Baker 2-1 in Boston, which is what she needs. She has also won the liberal suburbs. She is also doing well in Western Mass. cities! She “crushed” Baker in Pittsfield and Springfield.

  2. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

Quote: “The early good feelings at Baker headquarters have likely given way to concern.” Coakley has taken a lead in the raw vote total of 10,000 votes.

It failed by a good margin, which I find encouraging. Colorado can be a conservative state (despite the legal pot).

  3. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

NPR projects a loss for Mark Udall in Colorado. That’s bad.

    Shit we just lost Colorado.

Amendment 1 in TN is leading 54%-45% about 90k votes. It’s a measure that will regulate abortion providers out of business. Basically the same thing they did in TX.

  8. dakinikat's avatar dakinikat says:

Looks like Scott and Walker are staying in the governor’s mansions. Most of the Republican Governors are squeaking through. Must be low turnout.

Tough Road ahead for Mary Landrieu

She has consistently trailed Cassidy in head-to-head polling, by as much as 8 points. Along with the fact that Louisiana is one of the most conservative states in the country, Democratic turnout is expected to be low in this year.

FiveThirtyEight gives Cassidy an 81 percent chance of victory, while the New York Times gives him an 85 percent chance.

I am waiting on the governor race here in MA and the outcome of the casino question.

Other than that, I can’t take another minute of Chris Matthews!

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

I’m so nervous. Scott Brown seems to be gaining in NH, and if Martha Coakley doesn’t win I’m going to be suicidal. Scott Brown says he won’t concede until every vote is counted.

The casino question has been decided in favor of casinos.

      • Pat Johnson's avatar Pat Johnson says:

I am not even a fan of Martha Coakley but the thought of Charlie Baker pulling it off is unappealing.

Scotty will need to find himself another state to run in. Like Romney with umpteen homes across the country.

      • Fannie's avatar Fannie says:

Mercy, I really can’t figure out how the trigger was pulled for the republicans. David Perdue is outright winner.

  18. NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

About the only things interesting in my state this year are two competing gun initiatives. One would call for tighter background checks. The other is some RWNJ version of banning background checks. No results will be posted for about another half hour. Washington state is all vote by mail, must be mailed or dropped off by 8 pm tonight. So results can sometimes take days to tally.

  19. janicen's avatar janicen says:

Looks like Mark Warner is going to squeak it out in Virginia. Whew! They haven’t called it for him yet but he finally slipped ahead and the only remaining districts should carry him further. We got lucky. Chuck Todd said the national GOP had some money to spread around and had to decide whether to spend it on Ed Gillespie or Scott Brown. They picked Brown. If they had thrown that money here, we would have had a disastrous result.

  23. Pat Johnson's avatar Pat Johnson says:

How can it be that both Rick Scott and Scott Walker won again? They are horrible civil servants!

Either people are not paying attention or the system is rigged for sure. And Walker is being touted as a possible presidential candidate to boot.

I’ll bet Obama is counting the days until he can finally get out of DC. Facing this newest crowd of naysayers, and having to deal with BOTH Boehner and McConnell calls for a handy supply of Aleve.

  31. janicen's avatar janicen says:

I can’t stay awake any longer. Like the talking heads are saying, this is not a wave, this is what was expected to happen. In two years the Republicans will have 23 incumbencies to defend to the Dems’ 10 so things will change again. Should be an interesting couple of years anyway! lol! Good night all. It’s nice to have like-minded people to commiserate with.

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

  38. bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

It looks like it’s over for Martha Coakley. She’s behind by only one point, but it’s most likely too many votes for her to overcome with 90% reporting. I’m just sick about it.

    Good night everyone.

  39. NW Luna's avatar NW Luna says:

OMG. The gun initiatives in WA state are headed the right way, and I don’t mean the Republican way!
About 50-60% of the votes in, and tighter background checks initiative is passing about 60% to 40%. The roll-back standards on background checks is losing, about 45% to 55%.

Also winning, to maintain “no agricultural excise tax preferences for various aspects of the marijuana industry,” in other words, no tax write-offs for legalized pot.

Glad WA state voters have some sense. Bummed about the bigger picture though.

      Hi BB,

don’t even get me started about that horrible election night. How depressing?

Has our electorate ever found a detestable rightwing cracpote it wouldn’t vote into office? This is beyond bizarre.

      • Pat Johnson's avatar Pat Johnson says:

Bizarre to say the least. Michael Grimm from Staten Island, under indictment for fraud, has been re-elected to another term in congress.

How low must a candidate go before he/she is voted out?

This will give Chris Christie a boost in 2016 since it appears as if few care about truth and integrity when it comes to leadership.

        • mablue2's avatar mablue2 says:

Miichael Grimm’s election beats me. The guy has been indicted by the FBI on 20(!) counts, and he gets reelected as if that was nothing. This stuff happens only with rightwingers.

Richard Nixon muss be turning in his grave because nobody in the GOP normally gets punished for anything. Maybe he was simply around before we all became crazy.

I am calling shenanigans on this election. I did the math earlier this morning and do the powers that be really expect me to believe that more than 200,000 people in Colorado voted against the personhood amendment and then turned around and voted for the republican for the US Senate? And that something like 60,000 of those people then turned around and voted for the Democrat for Governor? I call shenanigans.
