Throwback Thursday: Three Generations of Rodham Women

Good evening and/or late night owl greetings, newsjunkies. I thought tonight we could revisit this picture from the end of July 2010. It’s from Chelsea’s wedding as I’m sure you all recall, with her maternal grandmother Dorothy Rodham still alive at the time and present. I was reminded of the Rodham women when I was in Atlanta this weekend and got to have lunch with the wild and wonderful JJ aka Minkoff Minx (!!!! Not enough girly exclamation points in the world. Still on cloud nine!). With JJ and I, side-to-side seated inside a booth like long lost inseparable sisters from another mister, my own lifesaver of a kid sister to the other side of me, and to JJ’s other side her feisty and fabulous mama and her wide-and-bright-eyed, beautiful daughter Bebe…it was major “coochie time,” just as JJ told me it would be in text in the days beforehand while we were making arrangements on where and when–indeed it was the best sisterhood time ever and I so didn’t want to leave to go back to my conference events!
But, back to the photo and some more tangential musings on it. I often think of Hillary, Chelsea, and Dorothy, as my own mother is Hillary’s age and I’m Chelsea’s age…and my own grandmothers, both married by 16 in partition-time India, without any proper education to meet their abilities. My favorite joke about my paternal grandmother, in fact, is that she should have been a politician, because she totally knew how to wield power and get things done once she moved to the US and had to navigate the American healthcare system, and all without speaking a drop of English 🙂
I just cannot wait to cast my vote for Hillary 2016. For the budding young Bebe and my sister who enters her first year of medical school this fall, for my mama, for JJ’s mama, and for both my grandmamas. And, of course for all of us Sky Dancers! So many amazing renaissance women. So much untapped potential.
Alright, I’ll have more to say over the weekend, including a pic of JJ and me, and perhaps some other Atlanta pics. I’m going to do the reads I have for you tonight, link-dump style:
- NYT Sunday Review, Op Ed: Why Men Need Women
- The Mary Sue: Jane Austen to Appear on British Currency
- The ridiculous Louie Gohmert Pyle from Texas is at it again… Think Progress: Tea Party Congressman Compares African American Civil Rights To Snail Darters
- Via Grist… Breaking the grass ceiling: On U.S. farms, women are taking the reins
- I don’t know where the heck to ride my bike after installing one of these, but it sure takes music and bikes being my boyfriend to another level… The Bold Italic: Don’t Have a Vibrating Bicycle Seat? Get on That
Alright guys, Rue-kitto is rubbing up all over me for loves and attention. So, I’ve got to stop here and save the rest of my links for the Saturday Reads this weekend.
Your turn in the comments, Sky Dancers. This is an open-thread.

question- how is Chelsea a Rodham Women?
Cuz my head operates in matriarchy even though we live in patriarchy 😉
I’m definitely gonna use that line!
Her mother was a Rodham. How fucking patriarchal are you anyway?
With all respect, I don’t understand this question. We are (all of us) genetically part of our mothers and fathers lineage. In terms of your perplexing question, all of us are composed of Mitochondrial DNA which in the case of the Rodham’s is where Chelsea gets her genes and that includes the Howell’s which is the maiden name of Chelsea’s grandmom. *sincerely scratches head at this question* If there is something I got wrong here, someone please correct me.
Great post, Mona! I love that picture of the three generations of Rodham women. It always brings tears to my eyes when I look upon that picture because I am very family oriented and I lost my mom in 1982 (and she, until this day, remains my best friend) and never knew my grandmother because she passed before I was born. How I wish I had a memento for keepsake like this one of the three generations. However, I am lucky enough to have had that same close bond/friendship with my own mom.
And, one of the reasons I hold all of these Rodham women in high esteem is specifically because they were/are so close without one false note, who looked to each other for encouragement and loving support and unconditional love and each generation were the others role models.
Thank you for this post, Mona.
What a wonderful post. Please do give us more info on the Atlanta meetup!
I’m very excited that Jane Austen will be on the British currency. Wow! Thanks Mona.
Oh it was fabulous and Mona I love this post and the things you said….major coochie time it was! Love you babe!
My mother cast her last ballot when she voted for Hillary in the 2008 primary. She was very proud that day.
I want to live long enough to vote for Hillary in 2016. I will cast that vote thinking of my dear mother and of my grandmother, who was a nurse in WWI, but did not have the right to vote at the time.
It will be a glorious day when Hillary finally becomes POTUS. We can all say hallelujah.
Me 2. I’m all in, all the way!
Me three!
Me four!
A very nice kind of friendship for all of us sky dancers………………..Really like the name Bebe, luv to see photos……..and luv all the stories of grannies and mothers, daughters and sisters. I was thinking of my ggrandparents, Berry and Ellen, just this evening. Her son served in WWI, and my mother got his name.
Today we can do anything we want to do, and not feel guilty. I’ll be happy to place my vote for Hillary, and have my granddaughters help me do a Hillary Sky Dancing Gallery. Big Smile.
Fannie, her real name is Brett. My son’s name is Jake…they are named after The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway. But being only 11 months apart (not by choice) when my daughter came home from hospital, my son could not say baby correctly, it came out bebe…and the name stuck. She won’t answer to anything but Bebe now and at school that is all they know her by. Needless to say this is one of songs we sing to her a lot:

I also can’t wait to vote for Hillary, damn it can’t get here fast enough.
BTW, would love to see some pictures of Berry and Ellen as well Fannie. 😉
