Another Military “Assault Prevention” Officer Investigated for Sexual Assault

military sex assault

This is a breaking news story.

First it was the Air Force sexual assault prevention office, now it’s the Army. From USA Today: Fort Hood assault prevention officer under investigation

WASHINGTON — A sergeant in charge of sexual assault prevention at Fort Hood is under investigation for sexual assault, the Pentagon announced Tuesday night.

The soldier, whose name has not been released, is being investigated for abusive sexual contact, pandering, assault and maltreatment of subordinates.

The soldier has been relieved of his duties and no charges have yet been filed, according to the Pentagon. He oversaw the program at the battalion level, a unit of about 800 soldiers.

The solider is being investigated for among other things forcing a subordinate into prostitution and sexually assaulting two others, according to a Capitol Hill staffer who has been briefed on the case and spoke about it on condition of anonymity.

“Forcing a subordinate into prostitution?” And this guy is in charge of preventing sexual assaults?! Wait, it gets worse.

Two senior Pentagon officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is under investigation, also confirmed that the sergeant is being investigated for running a prostitution ring.

More from the AP:

The Army said a sergeant first class, whose name was not released, is accused of pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault and maltreatment of subordinates.

He had been assigned as an equal opportunity adviser and coordinator of a sexual harassment-assault prevention program at the Army’s 3rd Corps headquarters at Fort Hood when the allegation arose.

I’ll update in the comment thread if I get more information. Meanwhile, use this as an open thread.

Time for Obama to stop worrying about fake scandals and do something about a real scandal that is hurting a huge number of women and men in the military services.

New Incident Leads Military to Re-train and Re-credential All Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinators

Another black eye for the military’s sexual assault prevention coordinators has led Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to order that all of the military’s sexual assault prevention coordinators and military recruiters to be re-trained, re-credentialed and re-screened.

The unprecedented move comes a week after the Air Force’s sexual assault prevention officer was arrested for allegedly groping a woman, as well as the release of new statistics showing sexual assaults in the military are on the rise.

Late today, the Army announced that the coordinator of a sexual assault prevention program at Fort Hood, Texas, is under investigation “for pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault and maltreatment of subordinates.” He has been suspended from all duties while his case is investigated by the Army’s Criminal Investigative Command.

In a statement, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said Hagel was informed of the Fort Hood allegations earlier today.

“I cannot convey strongly enough his frustration, anger, and disappointment over these troubling allegations and the breakdown in discipline and standards they imply,” Little said.

Hagel met with Army Secretary John McHugh and directed that the case be fully investigated and “to discover the extent of these allegations, and to ensure that all of those who might be involved are dealt with appropriately.”

What chance do you think there is of women being appointed to head these departments? Not to sound gender-biased, but don’t you think that would be a simple way of being able to nearly 100% guarantee the “boss” won’t be found guilty of charges like those coming out for the Air Force & Army? Hopefully whoever selected this sergeant for the position is under investigation as well. I’m willing to bet the “boyz club” laughed their arses off when this appointment was originally announced. I only hope that Hagel remains steadfast in his condemnation of the abuse in the military & that heads will roll.

That sure would make a lot more sense, wouldn’t it? And what’s the point of sending the current ones for retraining if there are already other ones with issues?

Hopefully they’ll find most of the problems in the “re-certification” process. But appointing women would definitely make more common sense, though the military mind is weird.

I don’t necessarily see that appointing women would stop the problem. That person would likely be isolated and become less able to effect service. Rather the culture has to be corrected. If a case can go to trial, and the rape victim wins only to have an asshole general overturn the conviction of the rapist, then appointing a few women here and there isn’t the solution.

Women do have to be represented in all parts of the military. Assigning them to specific roles will ghettoize them, as they have been in the past.

I do think it’s interesting that it’s Fort Hood in the news again.

I don’t think anyone here is surprised. Not sure where you go that idea. I would certainly like to hear about your case if you want to share. If not, please know that we care about this issue and have been covering it for a long time.

      Take care.

    • No surprises for sure, but somehow that makes it all the more shocking for me still. Never ending is right. Like BB said, would love to hear more about your case, that is if you feel inclined to share… Take care!!
