From Marxist to Corporatist, Elizabeth Warren Drives the GOP to Insanity

Anyone who has been following the Elizabeth Warren story, her bid for the Senate seat in Massachusetts, which would put pinup Scott Brown into early retirement, knows the attacks from the Right have become increasingly frantic.  Particularly since Warren’s numbers continue to rise and contributions pile up in surprising amounts.

What’s the Republican machine and Wall Street to do?

They’ve tried the expected smears.  Warren has been painted as a woman prone to violence.  She was the Woman Who Would Throw Rocks.

Okay, that was pretty silly.

Let’s try: Warren is a socialist/Marxist.  Really?  Yet her message that no one becomes a success all on their own resonates with a lot of voters.  Why?  Because many people actually believe in the public/social contract that provides roads, education, police and fire protection etc. , the very things we all rely on, rich or poor.

Back to the drawing boards.

OMG.  Elizabeth Warren has voiced support for the Occupy Wall St. Movement.  She said she’d actually been championing OWS principles for years and that she was the ‘intellectual foundation’ of the Movement.  Now, we’re cooking.  The Republicans have declared the Occupiers hippies, losers, people who want something for nothing and . . . anti-capitalists.  Bring in the cameras of police beating on those vile, violent, dirty protesters and . . .

Oops.  Problem is many Americans agree with OWS positions, believe that Wall St was given a pass, while Main St was left to wither.  In addition, many voters are beginning to realize that unemployment, the housing debacle, the unsustainable debt can be directly linked to financial fraud and malfeasance, and that many politicians in DC are on the lobbyist take.  That’s known as the Washington ‘you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’ two-step.

What to do, what to do?

The woman is obviously a problem.  So . . .let’s make her part of the problem and the Big Lie.  Let’s roll out the word TARP.  She was involved in that, yes?

Well, actually no.  Elizabeth Warren headed the oversight panel,  investigating and tracking how those TARP funds had been spent.  TARP itself came right out of the George Bush White House.

But she spoke to those evil bankers, the very ones who stole the country’s wealth?

Well, yes she did.  While creating and then assembling the Consumer Protection Bureau, an organization to prevent consumers from being suckered into confusing, complicated financial instruments, as in home loans and credit cards that only give the bad news in the tiniest of print or in a foreign financial legalese.

Why quibble about the details.  Guilty as charged!

And so, we have the new bewildering ad from GPS Crossroads [Karl Rove’s love child], which declares Elizabeth Warren . . .

A champion of Wall St!

We’re beginning to see GOP flop sweat in action: when you have no good ideas, go with the truly stupid.

This is going to be a most interesting year!

Rove usually has it all thought out and is so methodical. I love knowing he’s flailing around like an idiot. She’s the best thing in this whole election season.

    Peggy Sue,

That ad is really strange. I actually didn’t understand it at all. I can’t imagine anyone in Massachusetts believing that Warren is on the side of the banksters. Is that really the best Karl Rove and his pals can come up with?

    • peggysue22's avatar peggysue22 says:

I thought the same thing, BB. And I agree with ralph–Karl Rove is usually more focused than this.

The only thing that makes sense is that the ad is targeted towards the so-called ‘low-information’ voter, someone who hasn’t been paying attention, who is not aware of Warren’s fights in respect to middle and working class Americans and who will hear references to TARP and taxes and say, ‘well, I hate those DC types giving away my money.’ I use the word ‘declare’ in the post but the message is actually implied, strongly.

I caught a piece of Lawrence O’Donnell last night and he was talking about Romney going after Gingrich on flip-flopping and how this was a classic case of ‘projection and denial.’ I have that same feeling watching this. Anyone paying attention knows that Scott Brown is favored by Wall St–that’s where a good portion of his funds are coming from. So, to deflect and deny, they’re trying to project the ‘bankster friendly’ message on Warren.

Will it work? I don’t think so.

If the GOP paid good money for this ad, they were ripped off. Which is fine with me :0).

Rove obviously knows nothing about Massachusetts. Martha Coakley probably would have won if she hadn’t given in on the anti-abortion stuff in the health care bill and if she hadn’t let Obama come in here to support her. Massachusetts is a Hillary state. Obama was the choice of the elites, but not the people.

      • peggysue22's avatar peggysue22 says:

Coakley was slammed with the healthcare debacle. Funding-wise, she probably didn’t have a choice but go along. Obama’s endorsement? That’s proven to be the kiss of death to any and all unfortunate recipients.

But sometimes things happen for a reason. Coakley is joining the likes of Eric Schneiderman and Beau Biden, the AGs from California and Nevada and refusing to ‘go along to get along’ on the Administration’s foreclosure settlement, which would basically let the banks off with a slap on the wrist and deny any further litigation.

        Good for her!

The institutions and gangsters who brought the country to its knees need to be brought to heel. If the President of the United States is unwilling to do it, Attorney Generals can at least represent their own constituencies and begin to flush out the corruption.

And no, Obama was never the candidate of the people. We know who that was :0).

They have gone bunkers, they feared her, their LOBBYISTS were shacking in their fancy shoes and they blocked her appointment. The ad is pure lies, but it makes you laugh, because no one believes it…but they don’t know what to do.

Go Elizabeth GO! Keep ’em shacking in their boots, wondering what legislation you will introduce…

It seems to me like the American people are beginning to say to the politicians/corporations (because really the line is blurry) you’ve gone too far, the line is back there and you’re going no further, we’re not going to believe your lies anymore. If I was American I would be very proud of that fact, and I agree it should be a very interesting year.

    • peggysue22's avatar peggysue22 says:

I think you’re right, Tim. We could call it the ‘Great Awakening,’ and frankly I would give the Occupy Movement credit for the shift. Regardless of what people think about the tactics or the wardrobe or any of the myriad of complaints, the message has had an impact:

Enough is Enough. We’ve been had one time too many and we’re damn angry. We know the game is rigged, lawless and amoral and we’re not willing to play anymore.

That in itself is a major step forward and I am proud of these young protesters who have pounded and continue to pound the Big Lie and have actually changed the conversation.

      It’s a beginning.

Hope you’re right. It is hard not to ignore the polls that say that every one loves their congress critter while hating every one else’s. Some on keeps sending bachmann and Boehner and issa back to the bull pen.

      • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

They only represent districts. I’d have to check on Issa, but Bachmann and Boener live in very conservatives districts.

Karl Rove is famous for turning the tables as a campaign tactic:

Look at tactic #3. It’s the one that infuriates me the most – project your own failings on to your opponent.

I was watching Rachel Maddow last night. He’s absolutely crucifying Elizabeth Warren. His first set of ads had her as an Occupy person, now he’s saying she is a flunky of Wall Street. He’s got no sense of right and wrong at all.
