Late Night: Hillary Fashion Bashing and Gossip

From ABC News Entertainment

Which of these two people is more tastefully dressed? The guy on the left, Tim Gunn of something called “Project Runway,” doesn’t care for the way the woman on the right dresses. Well, I think his outfit is horrid.

Things got a little “Mean Girls” on Tuesday’s “Lopez Tonight” when “Project Runway” guru Tim Gunn expressed his exasperation over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s sartorial choices.

“Why must she dress that way?” Gunn asked when Lopez brought up Hill’s outfits. But then came the kicker – a dig about Clinton’s dressing like a dude: “I think she’s confused about her gender [with] all these big, baggy menswear tailored pantsuits.”

This was followed by a discussion of “cankles.” Ugh! Why does this man feel entitled to judge the Secretary of State’s fashion sense?

One problem for Gunn. According to Lindsay Mannering at “The Stir,” Gunn was recycling material he had previously used on Conan O’Brien in 2008,

Listen, it’s one thing to make fun of our former first lady’s fashion, but it’s a whole ‘nother thing to use recycled material. Gunn said the same exact thing on Conan O’Brien’s show back in 2008. Come on, Gunn! If you’re going to insult Hillary, you better make sure you’re being a) original and b) accurate. I think Hill’s got some style.

She’s worn some beautiful, and stylish, outfits over the years, and I think she just gets better with time. Sure, some of her pantsuits aren’t putting her on the best-dressed lists, but this woman’s got a job and a professional air to maintain….And I don’t hear Gunn going after Timothy Geithner’s ties, or Obama’s shoes, or Chris Christie’s bulging buttons, so let’s put the claws away for a second and remember that sometimes fashion takes a back seat to a job well done.

Personally, I like Hillary’s outfits, and I think Tim Gunn–whoever he is–should STFU and find a real job.

Now for the gossip.

Former White House chief florist Nancy Clarke has a closet full of such insider tales from her 31 years with six first ladies from Rosalynn Carter (favored barbecue dinners) to Michelle Obama (prefers gala apples over flowers). And now, two years after leaving the White House, she’s written a rare behind-the-scenes book, My First Ladies, due out in September.

Clarke describes Hillary as

a mix of dignity and schoolgirl. When the Monica Lewinsky affair broke, Clinton didn’t show her feelings to staff and, Clarke says, never engaged in the kinds of fighting with her husband that was described in the media. Once, Clarke took the elevator to the presidential residence and saw Clinton dash naked from her bathroom to the bedroom. “We looked at each other and we both screamed,” Clarke writes. Clinton joked about it later. “She said it was like living in her sorority house again.”

What a great story. It just makes me like Hillary and her pants suits more than ever.

I love this post…thanks for the Hillary gossip!

And Tim Gunn has gotten a little too nasty for his own good.

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

Thank, madamab. I thought we could use a little comic relief. I’m very glad I don’t watch reality TV.

      • madamab's avatar madamab says:

I used to love “Project Runway” just to see the amazing clothes the people created out of couches and candy wrappers. It stopped being about that a couple of years ago..now it’s just a “nastier-than-thou” contest. Blech!

I think Hillary looks great…not a Botox horrorshow like Tim Gunn!

    • paper doll's avatar paper doll says:

Same here. Years ago when it was about the clothes it was good …but as with every reality TV concept, once the creativity ( sewing , cooking ) makes it a hit, the get nasty order goes out and it begins to bore. If I want to watch yelling , I’d visit my family more.

When they start snipping about Hill’s looks they are worried about her popularity….seems to me.

people (gunn) who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks.

That outfit gunn is wearing, artistically speaking, is shudder — awful. Purples not done well — and then the clashing Patterns.

Tastefully understated and elegant in the always popular black and white — Hillary.

I find this whole line of talk is funny. In my opinion Hillary does dress in the traditional “maninsh” suit. However, any time she does anything different she is creamed for it. Do you remember when they were outraged in the Senate because, heaven for bid, someone thought she showed some cleavage? I would love to see Hillary in some other clothes, but it’s still a man’s world and she’s still doing what those “men” seem to think is a man’s job! I actually love Tim Gunn. He is in a business where women are dressed to show off their best physical assets. Hillary is in a world that deliberately will cover up those best assets so they don’t distract from the job at hand. Otherwise men might get too distracted. lol Do you remember that picture of Obama looking at the back side of that young girl on the steps. I guess men just have no control if you dress too feminine. Just have a laugh over this. I think Hillary looks damn good for her age!

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

Well, I don’t think Hillary looks mannish in her suits. I think she always looks very feminine. There is just something about her that makes men want to lash out. Most likely it’s because she’s strong and powerful.

      • northwestrain's avatar northwestrain says:

        Sex role stereotyping.

        I agree BB.

If she wore skirts — she get’s slugged because of something she has no control over — genetics of her ankles. No matter what she does some MCP will make a remark.

Even women wearing the shroud things — one would think that wearing black with nothing showing would satisfy the MCPs but no — self appointed clothing police will beat women for wearing bras. (Sort of what the Prime minister of Israel does to female reporters).

Fashion police — get a life please.

Neither of these twits is fit to kneel at Hillary’s feet. Lopez took a kidney from his wife and then cheated on her. Gunn has probably had enough cruel jokes made about his homosexuality that one would think that he would think twice about sneering at one of the true supporters of gays and lesbians in public life.

Hillary is a lovely woman whose clothing is always appropriate and enhances her ability to do her very important work. Actually, Lopez and Gunn should be on their knees thanking Hillary for what she’s done for their communities while she was wearing pants suits.

      • Woman Voter's avatar Woman Voter says:

TIm Gun and George Lopez showed they really hate women, especially strong, committed hard working women and they resorted to their base line of misogyny to attack. Sad, but they have some serious issues and they were out of touch as even the audience’s gasps didn’t clue them in, that MISOGYNY ISN’T FUNNY!

Catty remark?? How many of the male congress critters are using boTox??

Boehner and some of the other critters seem to have a stiff upper lip — of the sort that indicates/screams BOTOX.

  5. The Rock's avatar The Rock says:

Nice post BB! Gunn now needs to go after Angela Merkel’s pantsuits….

    Asshat.

    Hillary 2012

  6. Branjor's avatar Branjor says:

    I think she’s confused about her gender….

And just what is Hillary’s “gender”? Females are a biological sex, not a “gender.”

  7. minkoffminx's avatar Minkoff Minx says:

Embrace the Pantsuit! Love the Pantsuit! Admire the woman that is wearing them.

  8. Dee's avatar Dee says:

I have a little problem with the florist story – Hillary did not belong to a sorority. The correct housing reference would likely be dormitory.

    • bostonboomer's avatar bostonboomer says:

You’re probably right. I thought the “running naked” part was rather charming, myself.

  9. Sweet Sue's avatar Sweet Sue says:

Poor Tim has lost a decade or two.
Hillary is no longer FLOTUS; it’s her task to promote American interests, not American fashion.
Let Michelle be the clothes horse; Hillary has an actual job.
