You Don’t Fool Me: Candidates ARE responsible for the tone of their Campaign

I was working late on a research paper last night when some one from Bitterpoliticz sent me to HireHeels to give a  word of support to Paula Abeles’ response to the threats she’s been receiving from overzealous Obama supporters. Here’s the link:

http://hireheels.com/blog/2008/06/21/paula-abeles-responds-to-daily-kos-racist-attacks/

I wrote an immediate, supportive response because I know how it feels.  Back in the year of the woman, I ran for the Nebraska unicameral.  I was a republican back then and basically had the squeakiest clean of normal lives.  The problem was I was a pro-choice republican woman and the anti-choice side will have none of that.

The seat was held by an anti-choice democratic man at the time I ran.  He was a powerful incumbent.  He choose not to run after I successfully pulled a lot of support away from him by doing basic grass roots work.  No one knew he wasn’t running for re-election until a day before the final filing date expired.  Labor scrambled and came up with a very weak candidate.  A trial lawyer signed up.  All the usual types of special interest candidates were on the ballot.  There were a total of 7 of us during the primary. The anti-choice folks found a beautician who had lived in the state for six months that began the run as a simple housewife.  I won the primary handily.  I continued knocking on doors and talking to people.  I never changed my positions, my image, or my promises.

The general election was a different story. It was the ugliest, nastiest dirty campaign and you’d have thought Rove was running it.  By the time it was over, I was having nightmares and afraid to walk in my own neighborhood.  This candidate not only completely remade herself into a small business person, but an incredibly large number of people with serious personality and emotional disorders were running amok in my kid’s schools, in my church, in my neighborhood.  There were whisper campaigns, hateful things said from evangelical church pulpits, and phone calls every night to my answering machine explaining where my small children had been that day and exactly which abortion procedure would be applied to them if the caller had their way.  I had to deal with the newspaper calling me up and asking me if I’d been fired from a teller job in college for stealing money (complete fabrication on ALL accounts).  My good pictures all disappeared mysteriously from their files and the only one that they had left to run was one  of me when I had just recovered from inoperable cancer and looked exactly like I’d been sick for two years.  The evangelical churches bussed folks into the state from surrounding areas to make my life a living hell.  All because I was a pro-choice woman republican candidate.

After that experience, I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and re-registered democrat.  I had lost the election by a small margin, but the impact it had on my life was not marginal.  Folks that I had gone to school with since I was a kid were no longer speaking to me.

I had tons of donated money and support in that campaign because my opponent was so out of her league and so far to the right that she scared every interest group from the firefighters and policemen to the bankers.  She ran her campaign with her own funds and some support from the Biker anti-helmet crowd, truckers (her husband was one), and the anti-choice movement.  I never ran ONE negative ad.  Believe me, I even had the money to do tv ads and I could’ve done it.  I told my campaigners to stay out of her immediate neighborhood and focus on my message which was basically one of economic development and re-doing the tax structure of Nebraska.  I made it clear I wanted to sit on the expenditures committee and that I had no plans of staying in there once I’d worked on these things because I had a successful consulting firm and wanted to return to it.  I kept waiting for the press to do some research, but all they were interested in was starting a cat fight on the choice issue between two women.  (It was the first time two women had come through the primary in the state, you’d have thought they’d have better things to focus on.)

If a campaign goes hyper negative and acts hyper angry and incensed all the time, it attracts emotionally damaged people and  simply hypes them into a frenzy.  The candidate may get an ego charge from all that worship, but that frenzy will turn on the opposition’s campaign.  Innocent people will experience threats of violence for just doing their thing as an U.S. citizen.  This kind of evil is a DIRECT reflection on the character of the candidate.  A candidate calls the shots and can reel back the attack dogs.  A candidate can be honest about who they are and what they stand for or they can let their campaign remake them and sell them like a can of soup.  A candidate may say they have no control over their minions, but that is NOT true.  The character of the candidate is ALWAYS THE ISSUE and always at the center of ANY decision.  If you see a campaign doing questionable things, it is because that candidate has questionable character.  As an example, the race-baiting started with the Obama campaign.  They have a pattern.  Take an innocent comment, some surrogate blows it out of proportion and labels it racist.  Obama comes out a few days later to say, ah no, maybe not.  But by then, the damage is done.  By then, the angry, whipped up mob has gone into attack mode and the damage is done to innocent people.

Paula, I am so sorry for what you are going through.  It’ll end.  Right now, you’re living a nightmare and that means your children will too.  But just think, if you stop now, your country, OUR country will be living that nightmare for at least 4 years.   You are my hero.

Senator Barrack Obama … YOU DO NOT FOOL ME and you didn’t fool 18 million other voters.  Call off your attack dogs.

Under the Bus Denial: You might be Experiencing It

Hello, my name is Dakinikat  and I’ve been under the bus since Obama and the DNC told the U.S. that they didn’t need Hillary Voters to win the GE.  Since I am now a veteran of under-the-bus syndrome,  I have been authorized to point out symptoms and suggested cures for those of you from Daily Kampf, Huffpoop, and even my old haunt FireDawgFLake that have just recently been thrown UNDER THE BUS.  Let me help walk you through Under the Bus Denial.

Yes, I know, you’re standing there, thinking… why did he throw me under the bus.

Yesterday I was important.  Yesterday I was a person with a vote  that counted.

Remember, this is your first clue.  There is a meeting held some where in a dark room where he finally says something to the effect of:

However, I need to make a decision in the next few months as to how I manage that since I’m running against John McCain, which takes a lot of time. If women take a moment to realize that on every issue important to women, John McCain is not in their corner, that would help them get over it.”

Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., a longtime Clinton supporter, did not like those last three words — “Get over it.” She found them dismissive, off-putting.

source:  http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/06/tense-moment-at.html

Yes, Representative Diane Watson, you are under the bus.  You must embrace it in order to heal and move forward.  You know you’re beginning to get better when the Unity Pony comes calling and something seems to be amiss.

I’ve chose a few posts from Huffpoop (yes they are real) about the FISA position.  Perhaps you’ll recognize some of the symptoms and realize you too, could be suffering from under the bus denial.

“Choking on all that Kool-Aid I drank after Iowa. wow! I feel like Barack just punched me.”

This definitely is symptomatic of coming to terms with being UNDER THE BUS.

“I think it’s time for some emails to the Senator’s senate office pointing out that we the people, who have funded his campaign, are not pleased.”

Sorry, sweetie, you are in strong denial of being under the bus.  Please get with an Under-the-Bus partner and by all means, go to OTHER websites.  LOOK for the PUMA LABEL.  You can be helped.

“why wouldn’t he give us a taste of that change we yearn for? why won’t he be the leader that we are all expecting him to be? it doesn’t seem like this would be such a hard battle for him to fight…especially since we have been told he taught constitutional law. 41 senators is all he would need to fillibuster this bill. do you honestly believe that would be a difficult task for him to accomplish? just seems to me that this is the opportune time for him to show us what kind of president he will be.”

Yes, classic denial.  Notice the fleeting hope that this yet might be resolved some other way than saying “I’m now UNDER THE BUS”.

“If he is forced, politically, to support some bill or other, how is going to bring the kind of change he has promised us? I’ve never heard such orginal excuses as I have seen on this thread this morning. Can’t we just be honest about it and say that if all the other Democrats were wrong to support it, so was he?”

Wow, that is a strong sign of moving from the denial of being thrown under the bus, to the anger of being thrown under the bus.  This blogger at HuffPoop has actually come a long way in less than 24 hours.  Now, here’s my advice for those of you in this place.

Remember just to wake up tomorrow and say:

“Hello, my name is Cheetoh”

and I’ll be right there …. Hello Cheetoh.  Then you say this,

“and I’ve been Under the Bus for 1 day now.”

Then go to your computer and THEN to this site:  http://www.justsaynodeal.com/

What you will find is at least 18 million others who were also thrown under the bus and we’re all here to help you.

What is the half-life of Hopium?

Today, I bravely ventured back on to a few blogs where I’d been unceremoniously told I was, let’s see, a republican-in-disguise, a racist, a bitter old hillary hag … ah, okay, I’ll just get to the point.  It appears that Senator Obama’s support of the FISA compromise is becoming a partial antidote to Hopium.  I’m also seeing signs that the rejection of public financing is having similar results.  (Check out this thread on NQ for more on that including a nifty youtube  that you may enjoy.)

http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/06/20/baracks-eraser-in-chief/

Here’s the Obama position.  (Look for it in the periodical section as he is the candidate of change and may in fact change his position over and over and over.)

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on FISA Compromise

Given the grave threats that we face, our national security agencies must have the capability to gather intelligence and track down terrorists before they strike, while respecting the rule of law and the privacy and civil liberties of the American people. There is also little doubt that the Bush Administration, with the cooperation of major telecommunications companies, has abused that authority and undermined the Constitution by intercepting the communications of innocent Americans without their knowledge or the required court orders.

That is why last year I opposed the so-called Protect America Act, which expanded the surveillance powers of the government without sufficient independent oversight to protect the privacy and civil liberties of innocent Americans. I have also opposed the granting of retroactive immunity to those who were allegedly complicit in acts of illegal spying in the past.

After months of negotiation, the House today passed a compromise that, while far from perfect, is a marked improvement over last year’s Protect America Act.

Under this compromise legislation, an important tool in the fight against terrorism will continue, but the President’s illegal program of warrantless surveillance will be over. It restores FISA and existing criminal wiretap statutes as the exclusive means to conduct surveillance – making it clear that the President cannot circumvent the law and disregard the civil liberties of the American people. It also firmly re-establishes basic judicial oversight over all domestic surveillance in the future. It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses. But this compromise guarantees a thorough review by the Inspectors General of our national security agencies to determine what took place in the past, and ensures that there will be accountability going forward. By demanding oversight and accountability, a grassroots movement of Americans has helped yield a bill that is far better than the Protect America Act.

It is not all that I would want. But given the legitimate threats we face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate safeguards is too important to delay.

Here are some of the comments I gleaned off of one of my old haunts …

“barak is already a disappointment and already too late for us to do anything about it…what the frig is going on here, I was actually excited about this campaign and his presidency, now I don’t give a flying frig”

“He told us all to fuck-off.  Piss on ‘im.”

“How do we get through to ‘Mr Next President’ that he’s about to lose a whole lot of potential votes?  (I haven’t sent him much money, but I’m inclined to ask for it back. I can use it. It’s two tanks of gas for my fuel-efficient car.)”

“What can I say? Anyone who competed in Speech tournaments in the 70’s gave Obama’s speeches on a weekly basis. Most Democrats bought it. What else won’t he stand up to or are ‘cute bloggers’ the only focus of his resistance?”

“It’s a good thing I didn’t eat luch today or I would have ralphed it up.  Not another dime. Dry up his money. and the next time some Obamabot gets all dreamy about how their demi-god is “transformative” I am going to vomit on that persons shoes. While their feet are in them.  He is a two bit Chicago politcal hack–and he has conned the democratic party with a nice suit and pretty speech.  He sure is good at talking the talk, but he is utterly incapable of walkingthe walk.  Somebody may owe Big Dawg an apology. He may have been right all along.  Yo! Edwards! Yeah you! Time to unsuspend that campaign of yours. The convention vote has not been cast yet.”

“Based on Obama’s statement I can see why he is no longer a Constitutional Law Professor.”

“Consider this Obama’s Friday evening progressive dump.  As I’ve said before, we’re all Sister Souljahs now.”

“Obama relied, the Rule of Law died.”

“That’s it. Obama will never get my money, he will never get my vote. I will organize like minded people against him.”

“So at least now we know that Obama sides with those who would place the protection of our corporate and political masters over the preservation of the Constitution. It was comforting to think otherwise, but now we’re all back out in the cold.”

“Don’t be so sure. Many of us didn’t think he’d sell us out on this issue. My rage has me shaking now and I’m done with DemoCorpRATes. What makes you think Obama won’t sell us out in terms of the Supreme Court for some kind of sickening middle ground? I just went over to the Obama website, told them to unsubscribe me and why. I suggest we all do so. He wants to run an internet campaign; well, we can withdraw from that campaign. I’m really thinking Green. What the heck, if we’re going to loose anyway, we might as well loose with folks who are not CorpRATe Whores. Yes, I now include him in that category.”

Oh, I just love it when I get to say, I TOLD YOU SO!!!

The New Democratic Party: Slightly less Evil version of the Republican Party? NOT ANY MORE!

What a way to get votes from people!  Position yourself as the party of the lesser evils to get votes from people that like their civil rights as the constitution promised.

Women!  Vote for us or the Republican Party will set up housekeeping in your uterus!  We really don’t do anything EVER about reproductive rights but hey, at least we SAY you have them!   Come on! Do you think that all those laws that have been shooting through the legislatures limiting Roe v. Wade could have gotten there without some kind of Democratic passive support?  How many Democratics with backbone does it take to filibuster an outrageous supreme court nomination like Alito?

GLBT Community!  We may not actually vote you your constitutional rights, but hey, we don’t talk about taking them away from you!  A few of us even show up to your parades every now and then!

African Americans!!!  Look, here’s a nice corporate candidate for you!  Not very qualified, he may set affirmative action back a few centuries, split the party into slivers, but you gotta hand it to us, we put an ‘acceptable’ black man right up there on the ticket for you!  (It’s up to you to figure out all that ‘acceptable’ implies and then you can join me under the bus.)  Look he’s even vetting a few hispanics for his VP!!!  That ought to bring the Hispanic vote into line!   And Jewish Americans!  Goodness, look at a few of his advisors!!!  Some one even wrote his AIPAC speech for him so he could say that unity thing about Jerusalem and irritate the Muslims!

Vote the Party and the Candidate that represents the Lesser Evil!  That’s us!

Well, this year, DNC, you just had to go and step over that line.  Tell me how Axelrod is different from Rove other than he’s the DNC brain of a DNC corporate candidate instead of a RNC brain of a RNC corporate candidate?  All those subprime guys doing the perp walk yesterday EXCEPT the head of Obama’s finance committe:  Penny Pritzker.  When does the Pritzker family’s role in the subprime and mortgage backed derivatives market get some attention?  Or is it because she donates Democrat instead of Republican that she gets a wave?

I’m getting pretty tired of choosing the lesser of two evils.  Frankly, since the DNC RBC pulled their stunt with the Michigan votes and delegates, I can’t tell the difference between the two parties anymore. (Where’s the gray in THOU SHALT NOT STEAL?)  Both of them want to rig elections and take votes away from folks and give them to others.  Both of them refuse to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney.  Heck, Nancy Pelosi, per RON PAUL’s outing of all folks, just put a huge knife in the back to the anti war wing of the party.  How much more proof do you all need?

Ron Paul Exposes Pelosi – Says Iran Bill Spiked
Submitted by SadInAmerica on 2008, June 20 – 3:08am.

http://www.knowthelies.com/?q=node/2090

Representative Ron Paul says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi removed a section from a bill passed by Congress which would have barred the U.S. from going to war with Iran without a congressional vote, claiming she did so at the behest of the leadership of Israel and AIPAC.

Then there is this interview with Senator Obama who says on his website that during 2005 he supported a time schedule for withdrawal of troops.  This interview with him in 2005 implies otherwise.

As for me, I’m joining Lou Dobbs as an independent until somebody resurrects the Bull Moose Party also known as the American Progressive Party.  They had REAL women in that party. They carried banners around saying: “THOU SHALT NOT STEAL” because the way the RNC had stolen candidates from Roosevelt and given them to Taft.

http://www.theodoreroosevelt.org/life/bullmoose.htm

So, how about it?  Let’s throw a few crates of tea into Boston Harbor and bring back the Progressive Party.

I’m tired of supporting EVIL.  I can’t choose which one is the lesser, any more

Got Racism? Obama throws Black Men under the Bus

I’m a white woman living in the ninth ward of New Orleans.  I teach at a city university with many many black students.  We turn out more black university graduates than any university in Louisiana. (Although I will add this was pre-Katrina and life has changed radically for us since then.) I also have been in relationships with black men.  I have voted many times for black candidates. My city councilman, my state senator, my state representative, my congressman, my mayor are all black.  I have voted for each and every one of them at one time or another.  I’d never be able to vote if I felt uncomfortable supporting black candidates.  I have many close friends that are black women.  These are not just casual friendships.  Our children played together.  They have keys to my home and I have keys to theirs. I am the minority in my community.

I now feel the need to lay all that out like I have never needed before because the first attack I have to fend off in my nonsupport of Obama is racism.  This mostly comes from young white men, for some reason.  But, anyway, I’ve laid it out for you so you know my world.

When I need to understand a viewpoint in the black community I read the Black Agenda Report.  The site is listed directly below. This is the latest in a series of articles criticizing Barrack Obama.  I just would like to suggest you read it all.  I’ve shared the lead-in with you and what I consider the most critical part.

Obama Insults Half a Race PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 June 2008

by BAR executive editor Glen FordFatherDayObamaCrowd

The Black man who wants to be president spends Father’s Day at church in loud and general denunciation of Black males. For added insult, he describes them as “boys.” Barack Obama’s primary audience isn’t the conservative Black Pentecostal congregation, but “white social conservatives in a race where these voters may be up for grabs,” says the New York Times. In America, even the “Black” corporate candidate runs against Black people. How did such madness come to pass in 2008? Blame the Black “progressive” misleaders who failed to challenge Obama when they had the chance. Now it’s too late, and African Americans are reduced to objects of derision.

And to me, the most damning part:

“Can one imagine Obama or any other presidential aspirant repeatedly hectoring any other ethnic group on moral issues? Singling out Jews for excessive materialism? The Irish for excessive drinking? Of course not; that would be unfair and politically suicidal. But there are large regions of the white body politic in which it is not only acceptable, but damn near required, that politicians demonstrate their impatience with the alleged moral shortcomings of Black people. Barack Obama trolls for votes in those foul waters, at the cost of Black people’s dignity.

Obama’s two young daughters were seated in the church, upfront, to hear their father call other Black men “boys” with no sense of responsibility. Ironically, a key Black rationale for supporting Obama is that he is a great “role model” for Black children. Imagine that: an ethnic role model, whose ostensible purpose is to make The Race proud, yet who with great fanfare periodically sneers at the supposedly debased morality of his own people. That’s close to the definition of sick.”
