The Sky Dancing banner headline uses a snippet from a work by artist Tashi Mannox called 'Rainbow Study'. The work is described as a" study of typical Tibetan rainbow clouds, that feature in Thanka painting, temple decoration and silk brocades". dakinikat was immediately drawn to the image when trying to find stylized Tibetan Clouds to represent Sky Dancing. It is probably because Tashi's practice is similar to her own. His updated take on the clouds that fill the collection of traditional thankas is quite special.

It’s traditional in that culture. Americans complaining that the clothing and accessories don’t meet their current definition of elegant are ignoring or unaware of the cultural history and symbolism of the ceremony. 95% of the Met Gala costumes are similarly unattractive IMO, and lack any historical meaning to make up for the ridiculousness. I say this as someone who thinks the royals are an anachronism.
I used to find the royals a bit fascinating when I was a kid. They look terrifically out of place in a today’s world. We see the results of all that colonialism coming back to us in terrorism plus now we’ve got right wing idiots with guns. This pomp and circumstance–and my family in England and friends can come at me–just is terribly insensitive. Which is why my favorite cartoon is the the wretched state of the UK economy asking for some relief. I can’t imagine King Charles doing the boxes with the same intent as his mother. And he could never stare down a pm like she could.
No sure what colonialism has to do with the US’s rightwing nutcases with guns. Despite England’s colonial past, they currently have sensible gun laws and their rightwingers aren’t as bad as ours. At least the UK abolished slavery without fighting a civil war about it.
