How terrible. It must feel so awful to be trapped with no way out because somebody else has painted a target on your back.

(I see that people are finally noticing he lied in his confirmation testimony thousands of years ago in the Before Times.)

Women dying from ectopic pregnancies or necrotizing fetuses have it worse, Judge Alito. Shut up.

Homicide leading cause of death for pregnant women in U.S.

Women in the U.S. who are pregnant or who have recently given birth are more likely to be murdered than to die from obstetric causes—and these homicides are linked to a deadly mix of intimate partner violence and firearms, according to researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Homicide deaths among pregnant women are more prevalent than deaths from hypertensive disorders, hemorrhage, or sepsis, wrote Rebecca Lawn, postdoctoral research fellow, and Karestan Koenen, professor of psychiatric epidemiology, in an October 19 editorial in the journal BMJ [British Medical Journal].

The U.S. has a higher prevalence of intimate partner violence than comparable countries, such violence is often fatal, and it frequently involves guns, Lawn and Koenen noted. They cited one study that found that, from 2009–2019, 68% of pregnancy-related homicides involved firearms.

Wow. I think I kind of keep up on this stuff, and I didn’t know it was that bad.

And then, just imagine for a second, aside from all the bigger issues, the em>cost of that male violence. The legal costs, the police costs, the prison costs (if any), the cost to the motherless children, the cost of the motherless children, the cost of the statistically certain downstream criminality of a large number of them. The patriarchy is expensive. … But worth it, they seem to feel.

I know that homicide — being murdered by men — has been the leading cause of death for pregnant women and new mothers for as long as I’ve been in healthcare. I recall Germain Greer saying that women rarely knew how much men hate them. Does the hate increase when men see women bringing forth new life? Or are the men jealous of the infant and envious of the attention it gets from the mother?
