Wednesday Reads: Feliz Navidad Mama

Merry Christmas Mama…

I think it gives something extra when dubbed in Spanish…don’t you?

And then there is this shit:

This is going to be the “way of the future” in terms of control. Use violence to keep their fascist in power.

I don’t think we can breathe until January 20th…12:01p.m.

Be careful out there…

This is an open thread.

That’s the thing about “herd immunity.” The people who think it’s a good idea see immunity for them. The “herd” is … something, who cares, doesn’t matter, “the herd.” Statements like Alexander’s just make it clear what herd immunity actually is. Herd disease (or vaccination, if available) always has to come first.

Agree. To get herd immunity to covid-19 without vaccines, a certain percentage of the herd will die, or have strokes, long-lasting memory impairment, neuropathy, or other unpleasant sequelae. The phrase “herd immunity” in connection with this pandemic implies to me the viewpoint of a single person who won’t wear a mask, who goes to lots of crowded parties, and who probably won’t get a vaccine.

Well, now Trump decides he wants more.

The Trump administration is negotiating with Pfizer to secure more of its coronavirus vaccine this spring, federal health officials said Wednesday, after the drugmaker warned that the United States probably would have to wait until summer before it could receive tens of millions of additional doses.

The negotiations come after Pfizer told the Trump administration that other countries have rushed to buy most of the supply that will be available in the second quarter of the year. The federal government turned down an opportunity as recently as October to double its purchase of 100 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the first authorized for use in the United States, over disagreements on delivery dates.

    Long overdue!

The Negro Leagues are now ‘major league’ in eyes of MLB, its stats a part of official record

Major League Baseball announced it was elevating the 1920-48 Negro Leagues to major league status, a move that not only seeks to right a cosmic wrong that has shadowed the game for a century — the segregation of baseball that famously ended when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 — but also forces a wholesale recalibration of its record book.

The “long overdue recognition,” as MLB called it in a news release, will add the names of some 3,400 Negro Leaguers from seven distinct leagues in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, along with all their accumulated statistics, to its official records. That means Negro League stars such as Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston and James “Cool Papa” Bell — all of whom were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., in the 1970s — will gain an additional designation denied to them during their lives: big leaguers.

Bob Feller’s legendary Opening Day no-hitter in 1940 — long considered the only one of its kind in the sport’s history — will share that designation with Leon Day of the Negro National League’s Newark Eagles, who no-hit the Philadelphia Stars on Opening Day in 1946.
