Sunday Reads: Living in OppressioniPosted: April 14, 2019
Yesterday, I spent the day doing what I love…being surrounded by derby people. I was a Non-Skating Official at the Atlanta Roller Derby, and it was a liberating day hanging with people who are like minded…as far as being liberal, pro-civil rights and also…fuck tRump.
One of the officials I was working with told me how recently he and his wife took a trip to Montreal. He asked me if I had ever taken a plane out of an oppressed country…telling me that in high school he went to Russia as a student. Further explaining the relief he felt when the plane landed in Sweden or Norway ( I can’t remember the exact country, but you get the picture. ) He said he felt the same emotional reaction once his plane landed in Montreal. That sense that he could breathe freely again, after leaving an oppressive country.
This is just an example from the perspective of one person of color…living in one of the largest cities in the country.
The nightmare is real.
It is madness.
