Many White Americans Fail to Assimilate: 02/13/2019 Cartoon by Jen Sorensen

I wanted to end with this book review…it looks interesting:

The Five by Hallie Rubenhold review – the untold lives of Jack the Ripper’s victims | Books | The Guardian

A landmark study calls time on the misogyny that fed the Jack the Ripper myth. Why has it taken 130 years for a book telling the stories of the women to appear?

Few women have had the moment of their deaths returned to more often, and with as much relish, as Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly. In each case their throats were cut, and four of them had their entrails removed. Kelly, the only one of “the canonical five”, as Jack the Ripper’s known victims are called, to die in her bed, was completely mutilated. Forests have been felled in the interests of unmasking the murderer, but until now no one has bothered to discover the identity of his victims. The Five is thus an angry and important work of historical detection, calling time on the misogyny that has fed the Ripper myth.

It will be published later this month. The Five from Penguin Books.

This is an open thread.

You too; splendid post my dear!

  3. Enheduanna says:

Excellent post JJ. I am very glad to see the push back happening on the sexist reporting about women in the campaign.

I’m probably more impressionable than most, so I couldn’t help being disappointed to hear Klobuchar was tough to her staff. Then I thought about LBJ – and what he accomplished. And yeah – maybe we don’t need somebody “nice” – like we little ladies are supposed to be – as POTUS. FK them – I hope we continue to see these attacks called out for what they are.

Exactly. Why don’t we hear about their policy stands, their (non-trivia) background, the bills they’ve sponsored in Congress? Then there’re the Trump corruption and treason scandals which have been barely covered. They can also do some investigative reporting and find more. So many things to do instead of excoriating someone for how they eat chicken. I want to know how a candidate’s voted on Russian sanctions and what they say about Putin rather than how they eat chicken.

The book sounds interesting. Thanks for posting the review.

I like this rule, vote for the democrat, if two democrats, vote for the woman. This stuff will probably never stop but we can outvote it into the backseat.

WTF? Russian infiltration of the Treasury???

  8. Minkoff Minx says:

Hey, anyone know at what oxygen level we need to get to the ER?

    My mom is at 92%

    • quixote says:

From the Mayo Clinic site: Values below 90% are considered low. Given your mom’s health problems, is there someone you can call to confer with? It’s sounding borderline and it would be good to get a doctor who knows her condition to say what’s best to do.

    • NW Luna says:

Just seeing this now. 92% is low but not ER low, unless it’s been dropping precipitously from 98%-99% in a short time. However if there is respiratory distress — new shortness of breath, then go. Definitely call her regular doctor.

  9. NW Luna says:

    Somehow I missed this too.

Also, I hate Comey more than ever.

    • RonStill4Hills says:

I so hope that there is proof to corroborate the Euro Peein’ whores story from the Steele dossier. Not because I care about President Nasty Buzzard, but because the outrageous nature of the golden showers allegation is an excuse to discredit the whole dossier. Basically proving the pee proves all.

How was lynching not already a federal crime? Horrific. It’s about time (it’s been time since 1776).

  12. salama says:

The outrage towards Ilhan Omar I believe is mostly sexist, because she is not a woman that keeps mute she talks back and they are outraged. Patriarchy loves policing both women’s bodies and their minds to the extent of what opinions we are allowed to have, they expected sweet, grateful and dainty not opinionated and able to feel enraged or take a stand fro anything really, Proud of her she should keep talking back
