Maria Ressa exposed Duterte’s drug war in the Philippines. Now she faces a possible prison term – CNN

Images and stories from Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war on drugshave shocked audiences worldwide, as bodies have stacked up in cities across the country, many of them victims of extrajudicial and vigilante killings.

While the government has hardly been shy about its intention to go after both dealers and users, hard data on the number of killings has often been tough to come by. One indispensable source of information, both for the international media and readers in the Philippines has been the upstart news site Rappler, which is now facing a reckoning with the government it has been a dogged check upon.
Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and her company were formally indicted on multiple counts of tax evasion last week, charges critics say are politically motivated and designed to silence independent media in the southeast Asian country.

Every time I read about that race I get madder and madder. Who the fuck are these people to mess with people’s votes? It’s just so criminal. The entire campaign should be jailed from the candidate on down.

“This is preschool, not the Oval Office!”

The NRA with the smoking Russian gun is really good. They all are — unfortunately there’s so much material to ‘draw’ from.

Maybe the Judge was pissed about everything in general, and rightly so:

This is wonderful: Ayanna Pressley winning her race of course, and the sisterly act of Katie Hill offering to switch offices. Shirley Chisholm is one of my sheroes; may her memory continue to inspire us.

This has encouraged lots of other Trumpists to shout that gingerbread cookies are MEN! MEN! It’s an attack on Merry Christmas gingerbread MEN!

Just shut up and eat the damn cookies, MAGAts.

Atrocious. I had no idea until a couple of years ago that lynching was not already a federal hate crime.

Now taking bets on how long Mattis will last.

Mattis, once one of ‘my generals,’ loses his influence with Trump

President Trump’s decision to abruptly withdraw troops from Syria is a clear rebuke to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, the last remaining member of a retinue of military men Trump once fondly called “my generals.”

The Pentagon chief also had tried to explain to Trump that there would be more chaos in the region and future problems for the United States if the troops leave, they said.

On Wednesday, it became clear Trump was brushing aside his defense secretary’s advice.

Once considered among the most influential advisers to a president with no prior government or military experience, Mattis has been repeatedly overruled by Trump in recent months and left out of key discussions as the president pursues his own national security path.
