Wednesday Reads: Quality Portraits

Facebook is in the news again. When I logged on to Facebook to get some cartoons, I had over 30 alerts…it has been a while since I’ve been on any social media. Avoidance. That is my motto these days.

Well, Johnson wasn’t one of the two senators who voted against the support of NATO, so there is that…

Senate votes to support NATO ahead of Trump summit | TheHill

Lawmakers on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted in favor of a motion supporting NATO, as President Trump continues to criticize the alliance ahead of his summit in Europe.

The nonbinding motion, which came as the Senate voted to reconcile its version of the annual defense policy bill with that of the House, expresses the Senate’s support for NATO and calls on negotiators to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to it.

The 97-2 vote in the Senate comes as Trump heads to Brussels. He will also travel to the United Kingdom and meet one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki during his trip.

GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Mike Lee (Utah) voted against the measure.

Thanks to Dak for sending me the twitter link to those images…

Dick Durbin has been busy:

And Durbin tweeted this too, back on the 7th:

Dick Durbin Warns That Trump’s DOJ Nominee Is Linked To Putin

Smoke and mirrors is the way that the Trump administration operates. Deflect attention from something critical by focusing the news cycle on something altogether different. This coming week will be focused on the SCOTUS nomination, which means the appointment of former Sessions staffer Brian Benczkowski to head the Department of Justice Criminal Division could fall through the cracks unnoticed — and that could be disastrous. Benczkowski “previously represented Alfa Bank, one of Russia’s largest financial institutions, whose owners have ties to President Vladimir V. Putin.”

For more information click on the link above…

Feinstein is also calling attention to this matter:

It looks like Benczkowski is going to be comfirmed anyway:

Fucking Manchin. I wonder what the Russians have on him…for his continued support of tRump? Must be a boy in his “golden showered” past….because if it was just a woman, in this climate today…where a president can payoff porn stars without any negative affects, an affair with a woman is just no big deal.

In other news:

Oh, one more thing:

TRUMP WILL DEFECATE ON NATO LIKE A SEAGULL, SAYS FOX NEWS EDITOR, AS PRESIDENT RANTS IN BRUSSELS
      BY HARRIET SINCLAIR ON 7/11/18

      http://www.newsweek.com/trump-will-defecate-nato-seagull-says-fox-news-editor-president-rants-1017130?utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=NewsweekFacebookSF&utm_source=Facebook

resident Donald Trump was described by a Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt as being like a seagull who will fly into NATO and “defecate over everything.”

Speaking on Tuesday evening, ahead of the president’s planned visit to Brussels this week, Stirewalt suggested there was no way to stop Trump from pursuing his own agenda.

“Quit kidding yourselves,” Stirewalt said in a message aimed at Republicans.

“You will not stop Donald Trump from undermining NATO… and you will not stop him from realigning U.S. foreign policy to be more favorable towards Russia. He is going to do it,” he continued.

“And the Republicans who say, ‘Well, we have a broad foreign policy apparatus and we forced him to impose these sanctions and we forced him to do these things,’ he’s going to fly into Brussels like a seagull. He is going to defecate all over everything, squawk and fly away is what he’s going to do in Brussels,” Stirewalt added.

Please tell me I’m wrong about this:
I don’t think Trump wants to understand or is likely even capable of the NATO alliance because he’s a Russian asset whose personal interest lies with Putin. He is going to blow it up.

My guess is he’s about ready to shutdown Ramstein AFB and will fire Kelly and Mattis if that’s what it takes. He’s trying to put a russian plant behind Rosenstein and signed an executive order to change administrative judges from merit based appointments to political. With McConnell’s help, he’s stacking the courts with young inexperienced right wing reactionaries. You’d think he kept Hitler’s playbook in his nightstand … oh wait! And he just defied a court order or reuniting those children who he is dehumanizing.

Theresa Mary’s government is in crisis and he’s buds with the Russian backed Brexit faction who all conveniently just quit cabinet positions. Then, there’s the debriefing and rewards he’s going to go collect in Helsinki sans babysitters.

The Republicans are worthless dupes who likely got campaign funds from Russian oligarchs… McConnell we know did. The Russians hacked the RNC and likely have Kompromat on the likes of McConnell, etc. So, it’s time to take all of this very seriously as he’s realigning us with the Saudis, the Israelis, and the Russians. (SEE the Seychelles meetings.)

When Fox News just started as a channel, it wasn’t too different from the kind of programming you’d see on any other cable news network. Yes, it definitely had a conservative lean, but it hardly existed in its bizarro parallel universe. Today, it’s become conspiracy peddling GOP agitprop whose primetime stars are beloved by outspoken neo-Nazis and Klansmen, exchange secret scoops with a Russian disinformation asset, and performed Nazi salutes at the Republican National Convention while anointing The Donald as their official candidate of choice. It’s InfoWars with higher production values and fewer plugs for supplements, mercifully relegated to proper commercial breaks.

We’ve all heard or have our own stories of middle-aged or older relatives who were enthralled by the channel’s siren call and became paranoid and far more aggressive. Its programming is by far the overwhelming choice for a nostalgic generation playing directly to their rose-colored version of the past and using that as a springboard to bombard them with outrage and fear fodder. From a scientific standpoint, conservatives tend to have an enlarged and more active amygdala, a part of the brain’s limbic system responsible for fear and anger, as well as creating memories of emotional events. This means they respond more readily to angst and rage and see novelty with suspicion.

President Trump has been making plenty of claims about how much the U.S. contributes to NATO while portraying other members of the alliance as deadbeats. Here is some of what he’s said and how those statements stand up to the facts.
