Wednesday Reads: Being ladylike does not require silence…

“Being ladylike does not require silence,” Betty Ford told the audience at the Greater Cleveland Congress of International Women’s Year.

I don’t know about you, but I need to take a break from everything…so before we get to the cartoons, I will post some empowering messages.

And a few messages that scream, don’t stay silent!

AAEC News: A Statement from the AAEC Board on Rob Rogers and the Post-Gazette

Have You Seen Me?

The longtime cartoonist for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has gone missing. Actually, we know exactly where Rob Rogers is—at his desk creating the excellent award-winning editorial cartoons he is famous for. But it’s those cartoons that have been missing for over a week from the Post-Gazette editorial pages, though we know Rob is drawing them because new cartoons are being posted on the web.

It doesn’t take much to connect the dots between the absence of Rob’s left-leaning cartoons and the recent arrival of a Trump-supporting editorial page editor. We would take this opportunity to remind all editorial page editors that their responsibility is to the readers (among whom in Pittsburgh, Rogers cartoons are wildly popular) and to the open and ongoing search for truth in contending opinions. The editorial pages are a public forum, not a members-only private resort in Florida.

Just a friendly reminder that the president fancies himself a monarch who is above the law and can pardon himself of any and all crimes. • #pardon #pardonme #emperortrump #kingtrump #ladyjustice #justice #doj #departmentofjustice #rudygiuliani #giuliani #presidentialpardon #iamnotacrook #lockhimup #abovethelaw #votethemout #holdthemaccountable #bluewave #bluewave2018

Excellent picks, all. And the cartoons are all good gallows humor … but I can’t even laugh. The gallows are just too big.

Sending you a large virtual medal for finding the cartoons in all that grimness! <<>>

I love all the “don’t be silent” posters.

Really excellent cartoon selection today, JJ. I also like the “don’t be silent” graphics.

Aaaaaaargggggh! I didn’t think I could ever be speechless at yet another Drumpf stupidity, as they’re all worse than the last, but you absolutely can’t make this shit up.

      • quixote says:

Apparently the latest is that the Dump’s admin at some ceremony celebrating close ties between Germany and the US used as an example of how they’ve always worked together … D-Day.

        No words. Just no words.

Just another way to make $$$ off gun violence.

Middle schoolers given bulletproof shields for starting high school

Students at a school in Pennsylvania have received a bulletproof backplate for their backpacks as a gift for graduating eighth grade. The ballistic shields were donated by a local company and given to students at St Cornelius school in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, as a leaving present before high school.

The manufacturer, Unequal, claims on its website that the shield is “kid friendly” and allows you to “be prepared” when “terror strikes”. The shield retails at $149 (although when the Guardian checked, the site was offering 10% off for people using the somewhat tasteless discount code “battle ready”).

In footage of the gifting ceremony, children were left speechless by the sombre tone of the gift. The president of Unequal was also invited to speak, telling students “it’s sad that times have called for such a product to be invented, but we have answered such a call”.
