In Democracy Index (Economist mag) USA now downgraded to “Flawed Democracy.” Have to be 8.0 or above to be a “Full Democracy.” US now at 7.98

All these executive orders….what the fuckety fuck?

    • ANonOMouse says:

I find these Executive orders especially strange because the GOP bitched that Obama’s use of Executive Orders to govern is unconstitutional.

      • Enheduanna says:

The enormity of their hypocrisy is breathtaking. But to authoritarians, the end justifies the means. They are devoid of ethics or conscience.

I haven’t seen a single thing – except possibly withdrawing from the TPP – that hasn’t irked, enraged or made me sick yet. Not one thing. And no middle road here – just the worst possible person to nominate or thing he could go after.

It’s only bad when the Dems use it.

The laws stick. They’re more durable.

I’m following the Women’s March website and the first of 10 Actions in the first 100 days, following the Largest March EVER on Washington, is to send postcards? That’s like taking a pin to a Giant helium balloon and bursting it right before it takes flight. I will send a postcard, but if they let too much time pass without another major move, this movement will die!!!! I’m very disappointed!

If anyone here is a part of this movement in an administrative capacity, or knows anyone who is, PLEASE tell them Don’t let this wither on the vine. The enthusiasm will wane quickly if they don’t take more direct action. Sending a postcard is sort of like throwing a basket of yarn at a 500lb Gorilla.

    • ANonOMouse says:

Here’s the postcard if any of you want to send one to your Senator. I’ve been calling my Senators everyday so they won’t be surprised to get a postcard from me.

Calls are better than cards or emails. But anything to keep hammering away in opposition.

    • lililam says:

That is exactly so- those pussy hats were largely hand knit, so yes, it is like throwing a ball of yarn at a gorilla. Isn’t that the nature of non-violence? (I don’t mean to sound so annoying, sorry). I think postcards are a good idea, as they are novel and tangible. If they are plentiful, that may be impressive.

Oh no no no no no – Mary Tyler Moore has passed.

Apparently there were false rumors earlier this week? But this looks legit.

    • joanelle says:

I just saw that online – CNN popped up with it

    • RonStill4Hills says:

Loved Mary for her show and her company. Really a woman to look up to. IMO.

    • janicen says:

This one hurts. She was such a special symbol to women my age. We all looked forward to and cherished our “hat-in-the-air” moment(s) in our lives.

      • Enheduanna says:

I grew up watching her on The Dick Van Dyke Show and later of course on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She was such a wonderful role model and success story for women. I didn’t know she was so ill; she’ll always be the young and beautiful Laura Petrie to me.

  5. joanelle says:

Good grief, now he’s done it. It seems as though he just wants to see how far we can be pushed before we respond approprately to all this nonesense.
He’s ordered federal workers not to halt external communication with Congress and the press. He is certifiable – totally deranged. I hope you all have written to your elected officials about how unbalanced he is – not emailed them but send actual letters – those get opened.

  6. joanelle says:

that was supposed to be to halt (not: not to halt) he has told them to stop communicating with the outside world

    • Enheduanna says:

All these people telling us to hold on to our hats – this is going to be fast – were not kidding. “This” being our downhill ride to the bowels of authoritarian hell.

So does that mean no more emergency broadcast warnings?

  11. NW Luna says:

Sounds like an improvement, but I do wonder about that “new guidance” that’s coming down…

The Department of Agriculture has reportedly lifted an order that called for scientists and employees of its research arm not to release any of its work to the public.

After a report that the agency had told staff to stop releasing any “news releases, photos, fact sheets, news feeds, and social media content,” BuzzFeed reported that another memo was sent Tuesday night from a top official for the department’s Agricultural Research Service that the original order should not have been issued and “is hereby rescinded.”

Prior to the memo, the agency disavowed the gag order, calling it “flawed” and indicating that new guidance would be sent to its employees. “This internal email was released without Departmental direction, and prior to Departmental guidance being issued,” the USDA said in a statement.

Quick shout out to Venus and Serena Williams, two mature American women (36 and 35) in the prime of their lives, getting it done in a sport usually dominated by teenagers!

All Williams final in the Australian Open.

The feelings of pride and admiration cannot be overstated.
