Wednesday Morning Open Thread: History Made

Good Morning!!!

I’m still tearing up when I think about last night. I’m so proud of the Democratic Convention and so very very proud of our nominee Hillary Clinton. Back in 2008, I thought I’d never see this day and I’d probably never live to see a woman President. Now it looks like it could happen. Thank goodness for C-Span and social media. We can now bypass the Hillary-hating media with their focus on ugly gossip and “scandal.” Last night was truly glorious.

I can’t believe it’s been only two days and we still are going to hear from Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Tim Kaine, and on Thursday night, Hillary Clinton, the first woman in history to head the ticket of a major political party!

    • Enheduanna says:

They said some surprises are coming too! Also Bloomberg {wev} but compared to Chachi, right? And I finally got a clue from ya’ll and watched C-SPAN – whew! I heard all the speakers – not just the ones MSNBC didn’t want to talk over.

    • Ron4Hills says:

Actually I have high hopes for Jesse Jackson. I think he is on the agenda as well.

I want argue his effectiveness in other arenas but he can give a speech. 🙂

  2. Pat Johnson says:

My personal elation is also mixed in with my unease. Trump is either even or ahead in the polls.

How this ignorant mad man is this close to winning is frightening. The GOP, regardless of how they really feel about this buffoon, will do anything to win and control this country.

As much as I personally feel regarding her qualifications I am still very unsettled about the voters across this nation who brought us Trump to begin with.

I am going to need a lot of hand holding to get through the next 3 months.

    • janicen says:

The more we learn, the more it becomes clear that Trump has been getting some outside, under the radar help from Putin. It helps to answer the question you and so many others have asked, “How could this happen?”

      • Pat Johnson says:

This absurd creature, wholly unqualified, basking in his ignorance, devoid of empathy, and wallowing in childish behavior, should be disqualified for just these behaviors alone. It’s a joke that the is even considered a rational choice to lead this nation.

It brings out my “Debbie Downer” reaction sad to say.

        • joanelle says:

I too have a great sense of unease, Pat.

My husband responded when I said I didn’t understand where the ‘depth’ of angst about Hillary was coming from- “You know there are still many men who can’t imagine giving that much power to a woman, and weak women who accept what they are told at face value who feel the same way. It’s a gender thing, they want to keep you ‘in your place’

I’m afraid he may be right and that there are people out there who are willing to go to extremes. And yes, Trump clearly is aligned with the dark side.

          • bostonboomer says:

Hillary was ahead in the latest national poll, and Trump did not even get a convention bounce. Remember we elect the President state by state–not national poll.

          • bostonboomer says:

You have to look for the polls, because the media tends not to report the ones that are favorable to Hillary.

          • roofingbird says:

Reading the methodology and data in the polls is reassuring as well. The last one I read showed about a 2% bounce for Trump and a 2% loss for Johnson, the Libertarian. At the same time Clinton’s rose.

    • Enheduanna says:

Don’t believe the polls – the press have an interest in creating a horse race. Trump can’t win with sexist, racist white men alone. Polls are so easily manipulated and people hate answering them, often lying.

During the GOP primary I saw a few Trump signs in yards around here (just outside ATL) – they’re gone now. Is that normal? I don’t see Trump bumper stickers either. Not seeing Hillary signage but I can understand that – I’m scared myself.

Anyway I hope the GOP voters who know he’s unqualified just sit home this time around or vote Hillary. If enough brave GOP leaders come out for her maybe they can be persuasive.

    • dakinikat says:

Post convention bounce and the polls that matter are in a few swing states. Remember, Kaine brings Virginia and looks like North Carolina is winnable which checkmates a possible loss of Ohio and even the Republican governor of Ohio won’t endorse Trump. Pennsylvania is really keyboard they’re hosting the convention. Labour leaders have to step up and I believe they will given Monday night. Watch for Hillary’s post convention bounce

      • Enheduanna says:

I’m keen on the endorsements to come. Have our military leaders lined up behind her yet? I remember they did in 2008.

        • dakinikat says:

I think that’s tonight. I will have to chase down the schedule details.

        • NW Luna says:

They should be endorsing soon. They know they don’t want Trump as C-in-C. He’s a nightmare who would start fights for the sake of his own ego. As long as he doesn’t have to fight personally.

    • ANonOMouse says:

Pat……..Hillary is going to win this. The red state polls aren’t relevant. The national polls at this point aren’t relevant. All that matters are the purple states and Hillary is holding within the margin of error or ahead in all of them. But remember, this is July, our Convention isn’t over and we’ve not even had debates. As long as we take nothing for granted, work hard and VOTE, Hillary will be 45. Book it!

  3. janicen says:

It was amazing. Bill Clinton was masterful and now I’m looking forward to tonight and Thursday when both Chelsea and Hillary speak.

The fact that we finally have a woman leading the Democratic ticket almost feels surreal. Makes me feel as if every march, every protest, every dollar donated, and every hour spent volunteering has been worthwhile. Great to celebrate now, but we’re not finished. We have one more river to cross and it’s a big one.

  4. janicen says:

This is from the person who discovered Melania Trump’s plagiarism of Michelle Obama. He’s at the convention. Apparently, we aren’t getting a true picture from the press. Who knew?

  5. joanelle says:

This is a glorious day, I too wondered if I’d ever see this day, There are a few things that need tidying however. First, yes, Corey Booker is indeed a firebrand when it comes to speeches, I do still believe however that he needs some ‘ripening’ in order to be ready for a presidential run.I remember saying that Obama wasn’t ready to be POTUS when he was elected. He had some rough patches when elected. Can you imagine what he could have accomplished if the Dems weren’t in such a rush to get him in office?
I’m still concerned about the Bernie bros. they don’t seem to understand that Hillary was talking about many of what Bernie claims as his thoughts long before Bernie; however they still think of Bernie as the source.
I read a piece in our regional paper where a dieheart Bernie fan said that he learned (just recently) that our involvement in the latest war was ‘all about profit’ oh lord, where has this man been all his life?
Someone with that mentality scares me, because later in the article he stated that Hillary is a warmonger as stated be Jill Stein. These are scary times, people do atrocious things in the name of peace.
I have breathed a sigh of relief upon Hillary’s nomination, there is now an adult who thinks clearly on the Clear track to getting us on our way again

    • Jslat says:

I was interested to find out that the”hundreds” of BoBs who walked out of the convention last night were at most 200. The crazy media is featuring these people but the thousands of his former supporters are now firmly behind Hillary. Don’t lose heart over what the media chooses to highlight.

We will all work for Hillary’s election. Only focus should be on repubs nasty campaign. Remember we have the REAL ONE not their false cartoon.

I refuse to let anyone discourage us!!

  6. Boo Radly says:

Sen. Al Franken set Andrea Mitchell straight. This is borrowed from TL commenter.

The media’s all cluck-clucking about its supposed shortcomings, but hopefully they’ll realize sometime before November that their increasingly vapid opinions don’t mean squat.
Andrea Mitchell was talking with Sen. Al Franken on the convention floor last night after last night’s speeches, during an impromptu MSNBC roundtable with him and other reporters. For his part, Franken noted that not only was Trump was one of the original birthers, but also that he lied both about his “investigations in Hawaii” into Obama’s birth certificate and later, about how he had witnessed thousands of Muslims dancing in America dancing after the 9/11 attacks.

Mrs. Greenspan simply shrugged and offered her opinion that “facts don’t seem to matter in this campaign.” Whereupon Al Franken very politely admonished her and the other MSNBC reporters who were seated with them over that attitude:

“I think they still matter. I think, at the end of the day, facts still matter. And you know? I would challenge you” — as he pointed to the other reporters — “all of you, to make them matter, and repeat them when there are lies. I would say that the media, you know, I used to write quaint books, called ‘Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them,’ and I think people think, ‘wow, there used to be books about when people lied, and now no one cares.’ You guys have kind of a job to do.” (h/t to Frances Langum at C&L.)
As did Sen. Franken last night, Bill Clinton pushed back hard tonight against the false narratives maligning his wife. Yes, facts really DO matter, and yes, people DO care about the truth. And further, members of the media really need to do a much better job in the future to set the record straight and not let such obvious falsehoods pass unchallenged.

    • Enheduanna says:

I tuned in right after midnight to MSNBC just to see how horrible it was. Chris Hayes (who I actually like) was scratching his head – said he didn’t know Hillary had pulled that stunt in Alabama with the segregated schools.

      Chris – you’re a REPORTER – do your job!!!!

And even Rachel was like “We’re LEARNING things” – {head hits desk}.

The problem is cable news doesn’t do investigative journalism – they report what falls in their lap. Notice how it’s people like Jarrett Hill finding stuff out? And they still never figured it out with the plagiarism. Not one pundit has offered the most plausible explanation – it was Trump himself.

      • bostonboomer says:

On CNN, Van Jones said he had no idea Hillary had done so much social justice work. So called “reporter” Anderson Cooper said Bill’s speech filled in a lot of blank spots for him.

Why don’t these “journalists” do some research? Why don’t they even read Hillary’s bio on her website or read some of the in-depth articles that have been published? Why not listen to her talking about her record?

No, they can’t be bothered because all they care about is gossip and “scandal.”

        • Enheduanna says:

Chris Hayes actually said he just couldn’t understand why the way people who know Hillary and work with her and work for her find her so warm and genuine and why that doesn’t square with the public perception.

I’m paraphrasing but he actually said that. With Andrea Mitchell sitting next to him.

      • NW Luna says:

Groan. The MSM is an echo chamber. What happened to curiosity and fact-checking?

    • Enheduanna says:

P.S. Al Franken is a national treasure.

  7. Fannie says:

We have worked hard, and long for equality, and the day has come, because the first woman in our country, more qualified to get the job, is ready. We are with HER, she has plans for our country.

BB, you are right the media is out manipulating this convention, and bringing up Monica, and all the negatives they have done over the years. I wish they would shut up, they won’t, let’s turn on cspan. I am more than perturbed, they blame Hillary for everything, just like they do President Obama. Let’s turn the tables around on the media.

Hell would freeze over if Trump became president, it would be nothing more than the KKK, and Hilter running this country. It would have ugly implications for years and years to come. We can’t let Trump have an inch, and I am glad, it’s now time for us to get to work to topple him.

    • Enheduanna says:

      Maybe somebody will hack them.

The comments there were overall positive – just a smattering of Trump supporters.

  9. bostonboomer says:

This morning Donald Trump on national TV called for Russia to hack Hillary Clinton’s e-mails and publish them. He said he had no qualms about a foreign power interfering in U.S. elections. He also told a woman reporter, Katy Tur, to “be quiet” when she asked him about his ties to Russia.

Trump also called President Obama “ignorant.”

NYT: Donald Trump Calls on Russia to Find Hillary Clinton’s Missing Emails

  11. bostonboomer says:

The Atlantic: Trump’s Plea for Russia to Hack the U.S. Government.

It was a stunning moment: a presidential nominee calling on a foreign power not only to hack his opponent and release what they found publicly, but hoping the Russians had stolen the emails of a top American official, perhaps including classified information.

Following Trump’s thread on Russia was practically impossible. On one hand, he portrayed the act of hacking into Democratic emails as “a total sign of disrespect,” yet in the next breath he pleaded with foreign powers to do just that. He said he was “not going to tell Putin what to do.” He also insisted, “I have nothing to do with Putin. I don’t know anything about him, other than he will respect me.”

Trump previously claimed a friendship with the Russian president. “I got to know him very well because we were both on 60 Minutes, we were stablemates,” he said. That was later revealed as a lie: Although both men were on the same episode of the show, they had never met.

Trump has given conflicting signals about his connections to Russia elsewhere, too. On Tuesday, a spokeswoman told Newsweek that he had no business with the country. In 2008, however, Donald Trump Jr. said that “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets … We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia,” as The Washington Post reported.

    • NW Luna says:

Trump should be the target of investigation. Why is it tolerated that he’s asking a foreign government to hack his opponent and an American official?

  12. ANonOMouse says:

Last night was a beautiful experience. Nothing in this world, short of death or serious illness, would have made me miss this convention.

As for the polls, DO NOT WORRY friends, Hillary will win this and we will see the FIRST Woman POTUS of the U.S.A.

  13. ANonOMouse says:

  14. Ron4Hills says:

Overall the Convention has been totally Hills.

    Polished, professional, on message.

And guess what else, warm, loving, full of hope and optimism, and inviting participation from everyone from the FAMOUS and universally loved, to the humble and totally unknown.

The total opposite of Trump in all the best ways!

The media is really having to stretch to find ways not to gush!
