Good Evening

Hey, I do miss writing the evening reads. Hopefully when all this personal crap is over I can get back to it.

Anyway, I saw this little nugget of news: Teen Cuffed, Put in Cell After $350 Barneys Purchase: It’s Because I’m a Young Black Man | NBC New York

Teen: I Was Arrested After Barneys Purchase Because I'm Black

A 19-year-old college student from Queens says he was handcuffed and locked in a jail cell after buying a $350 designer belt at Barneys on Madison Avenue because he is “a young black man.”

Trayon Christian told NBC 4 New York on Wednesday that he saved up from a part-time job for weeks to buy a Salvatore Ferragamo belt at Barneys.

When he went to the store to buy it in April, he says the checkout clerk asked to see his identification. After the sale went through and he left the store, he was approached by police about a block away, and asked “how a young black man such as himself could afford to purchase such an expensive belt,” according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Officers hauled Christian to the local precinct, where he showed police his identification, as well as his debit card and the receipt for the belt, the lawsuit says.

Police still believed Christian’s identification was fake, and eventually called his bank, which verified it was his, according to the complaint. Christian, who has no prior arrests, was released.
He told NBC 4 New York that questions were racing through his mind while he went through the painful experience of being handcuffed and taken to a cell.
“Why me? I guess because I’m a young black man, and you know, people do a credit card scam so they probably thought that I was one of them,” Christian said. “They probably think that black people don’t have money like that.”

Which made me immediately think of this song by En Vogue:

Free Your Mind (song) – Wikipedia

Trayon Christian is suing of course…And what about that belt he saved up to buy?

He later returned the belt to Barneys because he says he “didn’t want to have nothing to do with it.”

Hell yeah, after all that shit,  I wouldn’t have anything to do with it either.

This is an open thread.

  1. And…y’all have a good evening. I have to help Bebe with a paper on environmental effects of meteor impacts on earth. Ciao.

That’s disgusting. The NYPD is out of control, but the worst person is the one who called the police from Barney’s.

    • Really… I know, did you see the thing out in CA? Calif. Sheriff’s Deputies Shoot, Kill 13-Year-Old – ABC News

Northern California sheriff’s deputies have shot and killed a 13-year-old boy after repeatedly telling him to drop what turned out to be a replica assault rifle, sheriff’s officials and family members said.

Two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, sheriff’s Lt. Dennis O’Leary said.

The replica gun resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff’s office. Deputies would only learn after the shooting that it was a replica, according to O’Leary. It was not clear whether it could fire projectiles such as pellets or BBs.

Rodrigo Lopez identified the boy as his son, Andy, to a newspaper and said the young teen was carrying a toy gun that belonged to a friend.

      • But then when you have 12 and 14 year olds killing teachers the last two days alone…geez. I think doing some research on end of world days due to meteor is going to be relaxing.

I saw that story earlier and almost linked to it, but I’d just read about the Holocaust survivor playing violin with Yo-Yo Ma and could not take the contrast.

You have to wonder about parents who give their kids assault-weapon toys. And some kids are monsters. Bad combination.

Have fun with the meteor collision research. Didn’t one result in decimation of the dinosaurs?

Gotta wonder how long it will be before people start taking revenge for these kind of idiot killings by the police? Eventually, it’s gotta happen.

    • RalphB says:

Hope those cops cost NYC a load of money. People at Barneys should be fired.

I had no idea about this BS. Lot of women should be really pissed in 2014, just in time to vote for Wendy.

dkos: Texas disenfranchises judge because she got married at one point

Republicans know they have to cheat in order to win elections. And let’s face it when it comes to lying, cheating, and stealing Republicans are well practiced.

But in the current Texas environment they need to do more than keep Black, Brown, and poor people from voting. Making one or two voter booths available for 100,000 people just won’t be enough this time. So what to do when gerrymandering and throwing away votes you don’t like isn’t enough?

You make the voters have id’s that match. Even though the state mandated that women have their maiden name as their middle name on their id. You insist that since that isn’t their real middle name. And bingo- no vote for you.

Never mind that these id’s were just fine last election. Or that pesky state mandate that women put the wrong middle name on their id.

Provisional ballots for any voter that doesn’t manage the intentionally Byzantine rules.

Not to mention the uppity wimmenz who see absolutely no logical reason why they should give up their birth names. Not until the menz have to put their youth names as their middle names. And that’s going to be a looong time happening.

a comment from balloon-juice but I’ve seen this same thing in the private sector.

Years ago, an intern from a local community college wrote a application to help with a common clerical task. It turned out to be so useful that everyone shared it and it became a fixture in the workflow. As you might imagine, it was quirky and crude, so naturally, someone suggested that they hire some pros to replace it.

The DOD has spent — as far as my coworker can estimate — $50 million dollars on various efforts (including one by Oracle) to replace this utility and not a single one has succeeded

    b-j: Remember the Alamo, Teabaggers!

… There were hundreds of Second Amendment enthusiasts gathered at San Antonio’s Alamo Plaza, many carrying loaded rifles and assault weapons to the public square. They stood before one of the most revered sites in Texas to protest what they see as unconstitutional curbs on displaying weapons in public.

The highest-profile speakers at the event were current land commissioner and lieutenant governor candidate Jerry Patterson, who carries a handgun in his boot, and conspiracy purveyor Alex Jones, an assault rifle on his back. Patterson and Jones reflected the inherent tension between the two camps at the rally: gun-owners who struck a more conciliatory tone and emphasized personal responsibility mingled with fringe elements who expressed a more profound anger at the government, and hinted at a dark future….

    Yuck, what a mess!
