Friday Nite Lite: Olympics, Mitt and More

It’s Friday Nite!

And you know what that means…

Well, tonight was the Opening Ceremonies…as I write this, we still have not gotten a chance to see the show…it airs at 7:30.  But from the pictures I have seen the Opening Ceremonies must be sponsored by the folks who are bringing the Hobbit to the big screen. Those “things” are the Olympic Mascots…you can click the link to find out more about them. (No, that is not a joke either!)

The mascots for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Wenlock and Mandeville, have been revealed and if you’re like me, you’re wondering what exactly are they?

What we know for sure: they’re metallic, have one eye each and no visible feet.

They also have an official website, and are on twitter — although with hands shaped like mittens, it could be difficult to tweet.

Organisers for the London Games say the mascots will be hit a with kids — and why not? Doesn’t every child crave a toy moulded from steel left over from the last girder on the Olympic stadium?

The question is, what do you think of Wenlock and Mandeville? How do they represent London, the UK or the Olympics in general?

I don’t know…they look like giant prophylactics to me. One eyed ones at that!

Let’s get to the cartoons. Some are not very “funny” and they are going first.

This one is important to me, because here in Banjoland, a young K-9 police officer…and former Army Bomb Dog trainer and handler, killed himself last week. He was a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan.  Cagle Post » Military Suicides Epidemic

Love the Bachmann cartoon. I actually looked at moving to Stillwater when I lived in Edina. I had very close friends that lived there because he was an engineer for 3m. I guess I dodged a bullet. It seemed so hippie chic at the time. But then, my neighborhood was great in Omaha until a big barn Southern Baptist and Evangelical metal behemoth brought crazies to my neck of the words.

  2. I don’t know if it is cold meds talking, but that opening ceremonies sucked!

The forging of the rings was cool but other than that…yuk.

  3. And about those mascots…they got both sides covered…the circumcised and the uncircumcised. Again, I blame my cold medication but I am sure that BB could come up with some other psychological reason for my phallic observations.

  4. Hey, that movie The Russians are Coming…The Russians are Coming comes to mind:

I loved the opening ceremonies. Maybe just to be different, HA! I really liked the pride in their national health care. I thought it celebrated the things they were proud of, and who doesn’t like a little cheeky humor. Spot on.

That’s exactly what the mascots look like, Giant one-eyed Condoms with mittens. Wow, makes me grateful to be a lesbian. BTW. y’all might have already noted it in another post, but in case you didn’t, Sally Ride was gay and with the same woman for over 25 years. I’m a bit sad she didn’t come out because we need role models like Sally, but I certainly understand why she didn’t.

Not watching the Olympics. I heard a summary of the opening on the drive home tonight & it sounded a bit different. The producer/director was Danny Boyle, the person behind Slum Dog Millionaire. Those mascots, in my personal opinion, are just strange.

I happened to turn on the radio during one of my middle of the night awakenings & listened to the BBC Forum on Inequality. Interesting, disturbing, maddening & well worth listening to. The woman participant was terrific:

    Love the cartoons, jj.
