Late night open thread: Mars…Mars…Mars

Okay, I stayed up last night to watch the Mars Rover Curiosity land. It was a wonderful experience.

So for tonight, here is just a bunch of links and pictures to past the time…There is this amazing photo, the first color image from Curiosity:

Okay, that is from  George Takei’s Facebook page.

Here is another one:

On Human unity and the “Curiosity” NASA Control Room | Informed Comment

In this video of the NASA control room during the landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars, I don’t see only one race or gender. I see human beings of various shades and cultures and both sexes, collaborating in a project far beyond the atmosphere of our home planet. (3:13 in is the explosion of delight). In fact, the control room reminded me a little of the 1966 deck of the Star Trek Enterprise, and I’m sure Gene Rodenberry would be jumping up and down for joy along with them.

  2. I’ll post this link and then I am off to bed…Hilarious New Ragú Commercial Sells Pasta Sauce As The Cure For Witnessing Parent Sex | Mediaite

Nothing says traumatic childhood moments like… highly-processed pasta sauce?

That is seemingly what Ragú is going for with their latest ad, which debuted this weekend during NBC’s Olympic coverage.

The new commercial shows a chubby little boy eagerly approaching his parents’ bedroom, seemingly with something important to tell mom. He opens the door without knocking, and then — mouth agape — he witnesses his parents engaging in coitus.

Cue the faux-country jingle: “Parents in bed / but it’s just 8 o’clock / that’s why they taught you / you should always knock.”

The cure for this traumatic moment? “He needs Ragú / ’cause growin’ up’s tough,” says the singer over the song’s climax (geez, guys, no pun intended) as chubby boy walks away horrified. “Give him Ragú, he’s been through enough.”

As the boy sits down at the table with a plate of spaghetti with Ragú, takes a bite, and nods at his parents (was this some kind of bribe deal?), a narrator concludes: “A long day of childhood calls for America’s favorite pasta sauce.”

In short: mom and dad are boning, so yer gettin’ mediocre pasta tonight!

    Night all!
