U.C. Davis Police Chief Suspended; Chancellor Still Won’t Resign

Yudof, Occupy movement, police brutality, U.C. Davis 10 CommentsUC Davis placed Police Chief Annette Spicuzza on administrative leave Monday in the wake of controversy over the pepper-spraying of student protesters last week by campus police officers.
The move by UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi came less than a day after she put two UC Davis police officers on leave.
“as I have gathered more information about the events that took place on our Quad on Friday, it has become clear to me that this is a necessary step toward restoring trust on our campus,” Katehi said in a statement.
Spicuzza had initially defended the police action, telling reporters Saturday, “The students had encircled the officers. They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out.”
Katehi has resisted calls by some UC Davis faculty members for her to resign.
Katahi’s words, “As I gathered more information…” are probably code for “I’m doing this in hopes that I don’t lose my job.” The President of the California state university system has made a strong statement about the events at U.C. Davis.
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
The president of the University of California system said he was “appalled” at images of protesters being doused with pepper spray and plans an assessment of law enforcement procedures on all 10 campuses, as the police chief and two officers were placed on administrative leave.
“Free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and non-violent protest has long been central to our history,” UC President Mark G. Yudof said in a statement Sunday in response to the spraying of students sitting passively at UC Davis. “It is a value we must protect with vigilance.”
Yudof said it was not his intention to “micromanage our campus police forces,” but he said all 10 chancellors would convene soon for a discussion “about how to ensure proportional law enforcement response to non-violent protest.”
Protesters have planned a rally on the UC Davis campus today at noon Pacific time. Let’s hope the campus police leave their pepper spray and their tasers behind and act as if they respect the U.S. Constitution for a change.
OWS protests outside Mayor Bloomberg’s house. Three arrested.

the cops that did this should be fired.
The pepper spray used on the kids was military grade mace. One of the victims had an asthmatic attack as a direct result of being sprayed by that less than human pig cop. So far the cops haven’t killed one of the demonstrators YETT.
The students at UC Davis are being hit with an 81% increase in their tuition — they have a right to protest. Cut the administration jobs and the salaries of the useless administration at the colleges. That’s where the cause of the huge increases are coming from — administration at colleges. Mostly useless make work jobs for already useless administrative jobs.
It was RayGun’s goal as Gov of California to kill the colleges and universities in California. He did a lot of damage when he was Gov — and his followers continue down the same path.
They came very close to killing the guy in Oakland.
Two Vets were beaten by the Oakland cops and were in critical condition. There have been a few close calls — and in some cases the close calls were due to cops ignoring the critical condition of the victims.
When sadistic cops are turned loose on weaker civilians there is always the possibility of murder by cop.
NWR, calling those cops pigs is an insult to pigs. No, seriously, pigs are nice animals and don’t deserve to be smeared like that. Why don’t you call the cops what they really are as a term of insult – men? WHAT, you say, not all cops are men, why, the UC Davis police chief is a woman, sputter, sputter, what bigotry!
HAHA! Anyway, not all cops may be men (though all the pepper spraying ones were as far as I could see), but not ANY of them are “pigs” ! Why should pigs be the brunt of such bigotry?
Excuse me pigs — the real 4 legged variety.
And yes at least one of the Neanderthal subhumans was female — she was short and one of the males kept pushing her around.
There are female psychopaths — and women hating females.
Pigs can be very smart — the animal behavior research is interesting.
For cops I guess I’ll have to use sadistic psychopaths — which just doesn’t have the same rhythm as calling cops pigs.
On behalf of pigs everywhere (the 4 legged variety), I humbly accept your apology.
As to the lone female pepper sprayer – I guess it’s alright if she pepper sprayed the male who kept pushing her around. Otherwise – not !!
Female psychopaths are too small in numbers to represent any problem with women in general.
Of all the unsavory type women you mention, by far the most numerous is the woman-hating type. There are too many of them for comfort.
Yeah, “sadistic psychopath” doesn’t quite have the ring to it as “pig” or even “b*@#%” for that matter, which only shows how vicious the devaluation of pigs and women is in this “culture.” The only other accurate thing I can think of to call them is “men.”
The right seems to be hitting Mika hard for her truthful, heartfelt remarks in reaction to crazy creepy Newtie.
